What are some food combinations that you don't understand?

I have never really understood the combination of moules et frites. I quite like fries and I love mussels but the two don't really work together for me. I'd prefer some nice bread to dip in the sauce.

A pub I was in recently offered chips with their potato pie. Now I'm more than happy to double carb but chips with a sliced potato pie?

Mac and cheese as a side confuses me too. I love macaroni cheese/mac and cheese but it doesn't seem to work as a side dish to me. Perhaps I've been missing out all these years.

Which food combinations confuse or disgust you?

My DH refused to believe it was possible to get a baked potato with a macaroni cheese filling in my home town until shown one.

HeronLanyon · 11/03/2019 21:31

Good thread !
For me it’s eggs and cheese (other than sometimes a small sprinkle of Parmesan on eg eggs florentine)
And cream with fruit - hate it - ‘dirties’ the fruit! Love ice cream and some fruis though so I am utterly irrational.
Butter on any sandwich which has mayonnaise. Yuck !

GinisLife · 11/03/2019 21:32

Beans - ok
Toast - ok

Beans on toast together ? Just wrong.

Oh ginis that’s quite radical !!

safariboot · 11/03/2019 21:36

Not a combo exactly, but fruit flavoured yoghurt. I much prefer my yoghurts natural, maybe with a little honey.

Notso · 11/03/2019 21:42

Yes to chicken/tuna and cheese and sweetcorn on a roast.
I don't get
ham and cheese,
Ketchup and anything,
Chocolate and fruit,
Pulled pork/macaroni cheese on a burger,
Chicken/fish and pesto

MumUnderTheMoon · 11/03/2019 21:42

I can't mix two things which run/spread. It totally grossed me out.

Girlinstripedpyjamas · 11/03/2019 21:44

Yes to pineapple and cottage cheese and tuna and cheese. Both wrong

Alienspaceship · 11/03/2019 21:45

Chocolate and orange. Makes me nauseous.

OhTheRoses · 11/03/2019 21:50

I love moules frites. Not sophisticated but so delish.

Scrambled egg and smoked salmon. Just why?

Girlinstripedpyjamas · 11/03/2019 21:52

In fact hot tuna is vile

bluebell34567 · 11/03/2019 21:54

pineapple on pizza.

PierreBezukov · 11/03/2019 21:56

Moules frites is amazing.

I also love lasagne and chips, especially with coleslaw too.

Hate salted caramel.

KittyHugs · 11/03/2019 21:57

Eggs with any sort of tomato. Boak
Eggs and Baked beans touching one another.

I have found my tribe!

Absolutepowercorrupts · 11/03/2019 21:58

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like eggs and tomatoes together, tomatoes change the texture of the egg, it's vile.

Meet0nTheledge · 11/03/2019 22:04

I like all these foods separately but not together.

Fruit and meat (includes duck with cherry or orange, lamb with apricots, gammon or ham with pineapple)
Cauliflower cheese with a roast dinner
Cinnamon with apple
Carrots with a honey glaze
Bacon with maple syrup
Salt and caramel
Tuna and cheese
Scrambled egg and smoked salmon

GallicosCats · 11/03/2019 22:05

Hazelnut yogurt. I remember it from childhood and it's really peculiar.

Rosemary in a tomato-based sauce. It has an unpleasant medicinal edge.

Another one here who's not keen on the whole sweet sauce/savoury dish combination (except for redcurrants which are a savoury fruit IMO anyway. Like tomatoes). Dried apricots in lamb stews are going to go the way of sultanas in curry in a few years time I reckon.

Meet0nTheledge · 11/03/2019 22:05

Oh yes and baked beans with a cooked breakfast. Just wrong.

singingismypassion · 11/03/2019 22:08

I love it but don't know who dreamed it up-
Marmite and mashed banana on toast

However, I hate
Sweet and sour

UnaOfStormhold · 11/03/2019 22:11

Egg and tomato is odd. And while I love the ingredients of trifle I really don't like them mixed.

But I love sweet and savoury together - the contrast just makes both taste better. So yes please to pineapple on pizza, apricots in tagine, and cheese with Christmas cake.

cheeriolove · 11/03/2019 22:11

Chicken on pizza
Raisins or sultanas with anything

AdaColeman · 11/03/2019 22:14

I think the moules frites combo works because moules aren't especially filling on their own, more amusement value rather than a meal. So the addition of chips makes it into a more substantial meal IYSWIM. And the chips add crunch to the soft textured mussels, also you can dunk the chips in the sauce. My perfect meal really! Wine

I'm baffled by pie in a bowl of soup, or in a barm, but will try them one of these days!

Wellcolourmehappy · 11/03/2019 22:16

Sweetcorn with a roast = lush
Chicken on a pizza = lush
Chocolate and nuts = LUSH!!
However totally agree that apricots, raisins, sultanas etc in savoury food is wrong!
I do struggle with lasagne - it's not right to be served by itself, the thin sheets of pasta don't feel very substantial. It needs something else but chips/wedges seem too carb heavy.
Gravy/curry sauce/ ketchup on chips but can only have ketchup on the fish - this causes quite a dilemma when ordering fish and chips!
The same with a full English , bacon and sausage go best with fruity sauce but egg can only be with ketchup and you have to dip the sausage and bacon in the egg yolk so cannot get round the condiment cross-contamination!
And yes I know fruity sauce is made with raisins and sultanas which I've just said I hate with savoury food but somehow it's just different!

Casmama · 11/03/2019 22:20

I was once at a slimming world class where the leader advised making up some smash potato and then topping it with tinned ravioli Envy

Tolleshunt · 11/03/2019 22:20

Chocolate and ginger. They just don't go together. It just doesn't work as a combo. Each is spoiled by the other.

Love moules frites, though, sorry OP!
