Giving up sugar and crap for a week starting tomorrow - anyone want to join me?

For one week I'm going to try and out out all my sugary crap and crisps. No alcohol. I've been half heartedly "cutting down" for a while now but I'm looking no-one so setting myself a tough but achievable target and then after the week is up...i'll take it from there.
Anyone want to join me? Or tips and advice for curbing sugar cravings welcome as I have a very sweet tooth!

Well, we had oven chips for tea but other than that a good day. I finished all the mini cheddars yesterday and haven't been shopping today so no temptation there.

I'm hoping to cut back one habit at a time and still allow myself small quantities of crisps etc but stop the binging. I am allowing myself two crackers with butter and cheese every night as my absolute favourite thing, but previously I would have had two, then two more, then two more until half a pack had gone.

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 15/03/2019 13:23

@givemestrengthorgin kind of! I didn’t eat any sweet things, but I did graze more than I would have liked Confused today I’m feeling much less snacky though so I think it was just one of those days!

Susannach · 15/03/2019 15:06

Just checking in. Well done everyone! Sounds like you’re all doing great. Star

Well, I’m doing... OK. I have had some sweet things and snacks but I feel like I’m succeeding in being much more mindful/moderate about it. One or two small things a day, rather than a whole packet in an evening type of situation! I’m actually pretty chuffed with that, especially as I have a hungry 3-week-old keeping me up all hours of the day and night! Aiming to keep being more mindful about it and hopefully make some more healthy switches going forward.

Good luck for the weekend everyone!

Held it together and didn't eat chocolate despite dp being a right pita and being very difficult to be around.im very stressed but refusing to use my body as a dustbin tonight!!had run avocado rolls at lunch with a banana, some cashews after school run,got veggies roasting in oven to have with naice bread and cheese.might have a bag crisps if I'm hungry later.need work on fluids,I've only had a quarter small bottle of water so far today....

needmorepizzainmydiet · 15/03/2019 19:40

Caved and ate a row of galaxy from a biiiig bar and two malteaser buttons my kids gave me. In my defence I’d usually eat the whole bar of chocolate!

Givemestrengthorgin · 15/03/2019 20:18

I'm managing to persevere but struggling. Weekend evenings seem a bit long and boring without chocolate, crisps and gin. First time in a while I'll be counting the hours until Monday when I'm going to have a dark chocolate bounty for brekkie! I can see why folk sack off diets so quickly if you try to just make this your new lifestyle. I'm using this week as a challenge to myself and a chance to reset the clock. I hope to achieve a healthier balance but couldn't give it all up for good.
But although not much fun i have managed to avoid the sugar and snacks again today...eggs again for brekkie, chicken and veggies for dinner, plus a latte and an apple this afternoon. Now for a cup of tea and yet another early night. My dh has just gone to get himself a fish supper...what an arsehole Wink.
5 days since I last had chocolate or crisps...the last time that happened was due to morning sickness with my DS 6 years ago!

Are you feeling any ill effects from it at all?

Givemestrengthorgin · 15/03/2019 20:46

No not at all actually which I'm quite surprised about. No headaches and sleeping well. Felt very bloated Mon and Tue but think that was a hangover from a glutinous weekend. Felt less bloated today and yesterday. Going to weigh myself on Mon morning and see if there's a difference. Surely cutting out my daily chocolate fix is worth a lb or two?!

Givemestrengthorgin · 15/03/2019 20:48

Forgot i had soup for lunch too, just veggie with some ham in it.

You are going so well giveme
I'm irritable and have intermittent headaches, but life here is very stressful at mo and without my sugar crutch to hold me up feeling a bit sorry for myself.i have to be all or nothing,I can't to moderate!!

Givemestrengthorgin · 16/03/2019 13:02

Thanks @Stilllivinginazoo . It sounds like you've got a lot going on at the mo so remember your advice to me and be kind to yourself. You don't need added guilt and pressure from trying to be 'good' when your focus is being pulled in other directions.

Well, thought I'd check in again. I ate a few crisps yesterday (not a whole pack) but the only sweet things I have had all week have been a spoonful of jam, a very small piece of cake and about 2tbsp of ice cream. Butter and cheese has been massively lower than usual, but has started slipping up again the last couple of days. I haven't lost any weight but do feel less bloated. I am in a coffee shop at the moment and have resisted the cakes.

Zoo - you have got a lot on your plate, even small changes are a step in the right direction so well done.

Giveme - you're doing well too, hope you see a weight loss on Mon.

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/03/2019 17:26

meet you are a true sadist sitting in a coffe shop not eating cake!Grin

joystir59 · 16/03/2019 17:34

It's a great thing to do. We are 8 weeks in and don't even crave the sweet stuff any more. We always say that Saturday is eat anything you like day and when we first started we would eat some sweets or chocolate that day. We don't even bother any more and Saturday is the same as any other day. We are eating like normal people!

Susannach · 17/03/2019 12:37

@joystir59 That’s amazing! Well done. Can I ask who “we” is? Has the whole family made the switch?

I’d love to get my kids (mostly) off the sweet stuff as “What’s for pudding?”/“I want a snack!” is the bane of dinnertimes in this house. I have one very fussy 3yo who would just eat sweets, plain carbs and snack foods if she had her way, and one 22mo who is pretty good with food generally but copies his sister in demanding puddings and snacks. I don’t want them to get hooked on sugar like me

Any tips or savoury substitutions that have really worked for you and your family?

Givemestrengthorgin · 17/03/2019 12:39

The last day of the challenge for me and i'm really pleased with how i have done. Absolutely zero chocoate, biscuits, crisps etc. I definitely think it's worked to help me reset the clock and break the habit of me eating that shit every single day. I'm hoping to restrict chocolate/crisps to a couple of days a week from now on.
Will weigh myself tomorrow morning and see if I've lost anything.
I went a run this morning and it was still mighty hard work. Had hoped that after a week of healthy eating I would have transformed into a gazelle Smile.

How is everyone else doing?

OP posts:
Meet0nTheledge · 17/03/2019 12:46

I went for a run this morning too, I've only been out a few times over the winter but hoping to get going again now the mornings are lighter.

Stilllivinginazoo · 17/03/2019 14:37

susannach sesame breadsticks with cream cheese is popular here.sometimes add garlic/herbs
As is smooth cashew butter and breadsticks(can't have peanut butter due to allergies)apple slices dipped in nut butter is nice too
Cheese cubes/sticks and grapes/melon/pears slices/dried fruit or with cherry tomatoes, cucumber, sugar snap peas and pepper sticks
Plain popcorn/trail mix
(Mine are older and like popcorn, pretzels, soy roasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds and a little dry fruit(or few bits dark choc chips as treat)
Cheese scones/savoury muffins
Quarters of boiled egg and cherry tomatoes

It's funny,I won't let my DC eat the way I do.i fuss and fret over them eating well then treaty body like a dustbin!!

Susannach · 17/03/2019 14:46

Thank you Still! Loads of great ideas there. I’m the same in that I’m always trying to get them to eat well and eating crap myself. But I feel like too much crap slips through into their diets too Sad

Mydressinggownismybestfriend · 17/03/2019 14:53

Fantastic Origin! Well done. And everyone else of course.

I fear I am replacing sugar with carbs. Been eating toast for breakfast when I wouldn’t normally have anything. Bought some chilli snack mix stuff today which was lovely and snacked on breadsticks with dip last night.

I’m trying to control my portions more when snacking. I am greedy, there’s no doubt about it so in the past I’d have eaten the whole box of breadsticks (well I’d have been having crisps tbf) but last night I decided how many I was having and only took that many out the box. It’s progress of a sort.

Stripyhoglets · 17/03/2019 15:18

I've not done great- hormones turned me into a eating machine to do trying again this week. Have done some batch cooking which should help!

Stripyhoglets · 17/03/2019 19:32

Have also prepped 2 days worth of food to take to work which will help massively. As Well as 2 days healthy breakfasts and evening meals. Only one small twix biscuit today so a definate improvement! Am at least eating alot more fruit and veg so that's a start.

Givemestrengthorgin · 17/03/2019 22:12

@Stilllivinginazoo thanks for the snack suggestions, they sound lovely.

@Stripyhoglets bloomin hormones can put paid to the best of intentions! I once an entire family sized tiramisu from Tesco when I was hormonal. It was delicious though! And sounds like you had a good day today.
I've got my bounty for tomorrow - will try and not eat it before 8am.
Well done everyone and thanks for joining me on the weeks challenge.
