Giving up sugar and crap for a week starting tomorrow - anyone want to join me?

Givemestrengthorgin · 10/03/2019 20:02

For one week I'm going to try and out out all my sugary crap and crisps. No alcohol. I've been half heartedly "cutting down" for a while now but I'm looking no-one so setting myself a tough but achievable target and then after the week is up...i'll take it from there.
Anyone want to join me? Or tips and advice for curbing sugar cravings welcome as I have a very sweet tooth!

Yes I'm in! Have a terrible sweet tooth and just can't seem to stop myself without having some support.

TBDO · 11/03/2019 20:29

I failed on no crisps - one and a half packets today. DC were bickering when I picked them up after work, I was starving and it was the nearest food to hand.

Have brushed my teeth so won’t be tempted to eat the other half pack (and more).

Roasted squash, sweet potato, green beans and a beanburger for dinner

Well done folks! @Stilllivinginazoo hats off to you for resisting that early evening temptation!
I'm feeling pretty chuffed as I've finally managed to get through a day eating no shit. Honestly, it's been years since the last time that happened. I had chicken and pesto pasta leftover from last night for dinner and then went a 6k run. It was tough but no surprise there given I'm at least 2 stone too heavy. I'm going to have a pint of water and a cup of tea and I'm done for the day...to start it all over again tomorrow.
Well done everyone!
P.s I have a super simple but tasty soup recipe if anyone wants it. Kids love it too which helps:
2 onions
6 carrots
Fry them off.
Add in cup of red lentils, two tins of chopped tomato and bouillon stock. Simmer for about 20 mins and then whizz up.

Well done everyone!

Dinner here was bolognese with noodles and loads of veg, followed by corn cakes and apples (evening snacking my complete downfall, but at least no sugar)

Ran for 10 mins - better than nothing!

Bed now. Reasonable day 1

DotingDaisy · 11/03/2019 22:03

givemestrength daft question - are the lentils from a tin?

Bubba1234 · 11/03/2019 22:13

Mmm I’m guna try that lentil soupSmile

Sure no problem here’s the mushroom soup:

I make chicken broth from scratch ( lots of YouTube videos on this)
It will make tons so if you have a big freezer this will work for you.
Simply fill up the Chinese takeaway plastic containers and the broth will be your base for all your soups.
It lasts 3 months in the freezer.

The mushroom soup ingredients:

Chicken broth
Water
2 bay leaves
Mushrooms ( 2 different types)
Salt
Pepper
White onion
Optional: little bouillon

Throw it all in a pot for about 45 mins and your good to goSmile

If you find it’s too liquid put a little cornflour in any time to thicken it up a bit

Fresh bread and real butter is lovely with it.

Bubba1234 · 11/03/2019 22:17

It’s filling and also gut healing and anti inflammatory.
I find it stabilizes my blood sugar so no cravings on the days I eat it.
This thread is great for accountability I had a creme egg in my hand and I put it down again.
Another thing I felt helped today was eating my dinner later then usual.
Also I did clean the kitchen tonight so I was distracted.
I hope I’m not too wrecked 2mo after work cos my distraction can be the gym.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 11/03/2019 22:18

I've been terrible, I'm ashamed of what I've eaten and was going to avoid posting but I need to admit it.

I honestly think I have issues with food, I can do the Cambridge diet no problem and have just lost 3 stone in 11 weeks on 3 shakes a day but as soon as I'm allowed food I head straight for the crap.

New day tomorrow and I really hope I can post on here that I didn't succumb to junk food in the evening.

Givemestrengthorgin · 11/03/2019 22:19

@DotingDaisy i use the dry red lentils, not the ones out the tin but they might work too.

OP posts:
DotingDaisy · 11/03/2019 22:21

Do you need to soak lentils first?

Givemestrengthorgin · 11/03/2019 22:28

Nope just chuck them in and simmer for about 20 mins.

hamsterwheel · 11/03/2019 22:33

Well I made it through the day! No brekkie, veg soup and a slice of bread, veggie burger, sweet potato and veg for tea. Whenever temptation hit I drank water! Not quite the same but manage to get through it! Let's see if we can all keep it up tomorrow too!

Meet0nTheledge · 11/03/2019 22:50

Well, I sort of stuck to it. Slight lapse with a bag of mini cheddars but at least no crisps.

My goals for the week are:
Max one diet coke, no sugary drinks
At least two portions of oily fish
At least two avocados
All bread to be wholemeal
All cereal to be wholegrain
No crisps
No sweets, biscuits or cakes
5 a day (not all fruit)
Only a thin scraping of butter (usually trowel it on)
About an ounce of cheese a day (eat masses of it normally)
Replace half my cups of tea and coffee with green/herbal/rooibos teas
Plain yogurt with fruit every day for calcium
No alcohol (not hard, I'm virtually teetotal)

I have had avocado today, made smoked mackerel pate for tomorrow and am nursing a herbal tea. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Well done on getting through day 1 everyone!

Bubba1234 · 11/03/2019 23:16

I gave up added sugar for lent and encouraged (insisted) family to do the same. We've moved to US and sugar consumption has gone through the roof. I'm getting bored now but peanut butter on rice cakes has worked well.

Givemestrengthorgin · 12/03/2019 06:26

@MrsDeanWinchester75 don't beat yourself up. It's so bloomin hard sometimes. If you're anything like me then one slip and I give up completely. I'm usually an all or nothing type. But trying to change that and think just because I ate one biscuit doesn't mean the day is blown and so I might as well eat the pack.

Good luck for the day ahead!

Stilllivinginazoo · 12/03/2019 06:29

meet that's one helluva a list to achieve!

I've awoken banging headache(expected ) and desire to inhale malteasers.thank fully no chocolate except few rocky bars for pack ups,but there's exactly enough for the rest of week so if I succumbed dd2 won't have one in her lunch and I would be in big trouble!!
Need go shopping today.must not give into temptations..if I wasn't posting on here I guarantee I'd be face first into something chocolate coated sec I got in from the school run this morning having acquired a little something hoard on way past corner shopBlush

FrangipaniBlue · 12/03/2019 06:57

I'm attempting to do it for lent..... I'm 7 days in and so far so good, not having any major cravings..... yet.......

Meet0nTheledge · 12/03/2019 07:04

Zoo - that's me exactly with the corner shop thing except my weakness is crisps. I've been gradually working towards those goals for a while so it's not too extreme (eg I probably only have 2 or 3 diet cokes a week and no sugar versions already). The crisps, bread, butter and cheese are definitely the tough ones for me, I don't have much of a sweet tooth. Hope the headache clears quickly.

MrsDean - I'm sure I have issues too, I absolutely use food as a reward/comfort and reach for the crackers and cheese the moment the DCs are in bed whether I'm hungry or not in the same way others might reach for the wine. I think I kid myself that I'm ok because I don't smoke snd rarely drink but my food consumption is very out of control.

I normally wake up bursting to go to the loo, today I haven't, wondering if switching to mainly herbal teas has helped

Susannach · 12/03/2019 07:21

Ooh I’m a bit late but can I join you? I have a major sweet tooth and find I “need” something sweet (preferably chocolatey) after every meal. I don’t!! I think cold turkey for a short time might be the way to go, it’s just habit, boredom and tiredness (I have 3 preschoolers) for me. I don’t want to give up sweet things forever but would love to have a bit more self-control around cake and biscuits! The DC probably eat too much crap too, so this will be a god first step to getting everyone eating more healthily.

oatmilk4breakfast · 12/03/2019 07:37

I’m usually ok at giving up sugar and trying but think I’m a bit depressed. Yesterday just gave up and ate have a bar of dark chocolate. Glad I found this thread this morning. Have woken up tired. Let’s see what’s possible today. I think I eat more when I’m worried and I’m worried a lot at the moment!

Bubba1234 · 12/03/2019 08:14

Don’t forget about using fruit as a substitute
Make a fruit salad at night if the cravings too much.
Woke up grand actually feel good.
Today’s menu is exactly the same as yesterday and I hope I go to the gym.
I’m feeling more determined thanks to this groupSmile
Good luck today everyone!

Pengling · 12/03/2019 08:46

I’ve given up sugary crap for Lent. Or at least I’m trying! Had a backslide on Saturday - after several hours digging in the garden I felt so woozy I had a couple of biscuits. I have to remember to eat proper food before I get to that point or my self-control just goes out the window Sad

My toast consumption has mysteriously increased since Ash Wednesday Hmm
