How long would it take for people to notice you hadn’t turned up for work?

I mean, an unplanned absence. So just say, ex day. You decide “fuck it all, I’m staying in bed”.

And then just don’t tell anyone.

How long would it be until some rings//texts etc?

I reckon about 2hours for me.

I have to be at work by 8:30. By 8:40 someone would be worrying, as I have a class to teach.

LittleCandle · 05/03/2019 19:12

Our shop started new opening hours yesterday and the manager of the shop across from us asked me why I was late when I came in just after 9am.

ToastyFingers · 05/03/2019 19:14

They'd be concerned after about 10 mins and would call after about 20.

We only have minimum staff on at the moment though so if I didn't come in, one of the folk from the previous shift wouldn't be able to leave.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/03/2019 19:17

15 mins and my line manager would call me, I’m never late and rarely off sick either.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 05/03/2019 19:21

5 mins I reckon! I've been called as I'm walking down the car park 3 mins past my start time

blueskiesovertheforest · 05/03/2019 19:31

Similar to Anotherdayanotherdollar - often we work alone and some of our clients can't be unsupervised, so if I decided to stay in bed without telling anyone whoever did the previous shift wouldn't be able to go home until they'd found someone to cover. Which would be arseholery of the highest order, obviously.

Sometimes we do overlapping or joint shifts - on one of those I was due to start at 4pm but my colleague thought I was due to start at 2pm and started messaging me at 2:05 despite the fact that he wasn't even off shift til 6pm. So even if there wasn't someone waiting to go home I'd say 5 minutes.

Moonflower12 · 05/03/2019 19:32

I'm always in by 8.10am. They'd start getting twitchy at 8.15. I'd be called/texted at 8.20 even though officially I don't start till 8.30.

RuthW · 05/03/2019 19:32

About five mins before I was supposed to start.

Paddingtonthebear · 05/03/2019 19:33

I’m never late for work so it would be noticed straight away. They would probably call me after 15 mins

QueenofLouisiana · 05/03/2019 20:42

About 10 minutes. I officially start work at 8.20, the children come into class at 8.30. In reality I’m at work for 8.05 and by 8.15, I’m ‘late’.

Ilove · 05/03/2019 20:45

About -5 minutes...I’m always early

If I’m not there, the parent cannot go to work

Just me, no backup

Isth · 05/03/2019 20:53

Err probably 20 minutes before people would start worrying and I would get a text. I used to be somewhat prone to being a little late sometimes, so they’d allow for that probably.

I once worked for a largish firm about 40-50 employees, the office I worked in with 1 other girl was off to the immediate right of the entrance, the reception and all the other offices were to the left, out of sight of our door. The other girl left and I had to do her job too so I worked on my own. If I had to leave my office for eg the loo or lunch, I had to divert the phone to another branch. I reckon there I could have been missing for 3 weeks or more until somebody was leaving/getting married and they were doing a collection. When I left nobody even stuck their head round the door to say goodbye let alone organised a collection, it was really rather sad.

Where I work now there's usually only 3 of us in, and it's busy so if I am so much as 2 minutes late somebody rings and checks.

When I was in my late teens and living at home, I had booked a week off work to go on a camping holiday in Cornwall with friends. Unfortunately the last Friday of work I went down with horrendous tonsillitis, and had such a bad headache I couldn't move my neck without it being too painful, managed to get a Drs appointment after work and started taking the antibiotics but had to cancel my week away. I was SO ill I pretty much couldn't get out of bed for 3 days, I'd barely drunk anything and not eaten a thing so hadn't really needed the loo. On the 4th day I felt slightly better and thirsty as my water jug was empty so I staggered downstairs (parents were at work) and startled my brother who thought I was away (as did my parents).

MidniteScribbler · 06/03/2019 02:36

Someone in my team would ask if I'd called in sick if they arrived and I wasn't there (routinely the first to arrive). If I wasn't there by 8:30 alarms would definitely be raised. I'd like to think it was because I was missed, but in reality, it would just be the panic of who is going to look after my class that day.

Troels · 06/03/2019 07:43

10 minutes I'd either have left a nurse alone to run the building, or the night nurse would be stuck waiting to give handover.

Mmmmdanone · 06/03/2019 08:04

Usually I get in at 9:20. If not in by 10 I will be called. I know because I went to a GP appointment I had told my manager about but he forgot and called me at 10.

wineandcheeseplease · 06/03/2019 08:06

About 10 or 15 mins. Work in a nursery.

LeSquigh · 06/03/2019 08:58

It would be noticed for me before my official start time and they would phone me at my start time if I hadn’t contacted anyone and send someone to my house if I didn’t answer. Uniformed service though.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 06/03/2019 10:12

There's one other thing about my firm. If they call you, and it's obvious you're driving when you answer, you'll get a verbal warning. Same if you call them to let them know you're running late. After the Tomas Kroker crash, the industry is making sure that mobile phone use in vehicles is stamped on. If you do it at work, you're sacked immediately for gross misconduct. The opposite applies: it's now an offence for them to call you if they could reasonably know or suspect that you're moving.

Frequency · 06/03/2019 10:15

About a minute. I'm always early and there has to be a minimum number of staff in the building at all times. If I didn't turn up the last shift wouldn't be able to leave. They'd be on the phone after I was five minutes late.

drspouse · 06/03/2019 10:58

Today unusually after 10 mins as I had a meeting with one individual who (unlike some others) may well have gone to enquire where I was if I didn't turn up.

GrumpyOldMare · 06/03/2019 11:08

5 minutes.

We're meant to be in 5 minutes before the start of shift so we can can read the daily brief and the day's job sheet. If we're ''late'' and come in bang on time, the boss/team leader starts panicking.

twilightcafe · 06/03/2019 11:15

If one of my colleagues doesn't arrive after 30 minutes then at least one of us will send a message via WhatsApp or Facebook messenger to check all is well.

bunnygirl80 · 06/03/2019 11:30

About 5 mins after my first patient is booked in. I’m generally a good 10 mins early, but occasionally traffic means I arrive at the start of the first appointment time. I’ll generally call if I know traffic is bad and let them know I’m running late. On the one occasion I couldn’t call, they called me about 2 mins after the first patient appointment started.

HotChocolateLover · 07/03/2019 08:35

At my old job, I sometimes just didn’t turn up and no-one noticed 😝 It was because my incompetent boss was the matron of two hospitals and I sometimes didn’t see her for 3 months, no joke. I also had my own office so if I just didn’t turn up the nurses in outpatients would presumably either assume I was in the office doing paperwork, off sick or on planned annual leave. It was ideal. Can’t do that now as i’m In an open plan office and sit next to my very nice boss.
