How long would it take for people to notice you hadn’t turned up for work?

I mean, an unplanned absence. So just say, ex day. You decide “fuck it all, I’m staying in bed”.

And then just don’t tell anyone.

How long would it be until some rings//texts etc?

I reckon about 2hours for me.

I run a small business - if one of my employees is later than about 20 mins (rare!) I start to get the horrible feeling that I'm the one who is going to work out that have been in car accident, needs to start phoning their family etc. Luckily never happened - worst I remember is a very reliable employee who was three hrs overdue and eventually phoned in - he was really poorly, had texted me in early hours but not realised it hadn't sent then spent next while vomiting / sleeping on his bathroom floor. Poor guy, but I was so relieved to hear from him! (He was back in right as rain couple days later)

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 05/03/2019 17:45

I officially start at 8.30 but am usually there by 8.00. I walked in at 8.15 this morning as I’d been dealing with a phonecall sat in the car park. I walked in to three members of staff stood in my office and was jumped on straightaway “we’ve been waiting for you BuggerOff we need —stupid random stuff that we could have dealt with ourselves but are incapable of using our brains and can’t even let you put down your bag and take off your coat first—“. I’m missed before I’m even supposed to be there!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 05/03/2019 17:46

No idea why strikethrough NEVER works for me.... 😞

Littlepond · 05/03/2019 17:49

About minus 10 mins. I officially start work at 8.30 and if I weren’t there by 8.20 my colleagues would be texting to see if I’m ok!
However, if my team had my back, I don’t think management would notice if I weren’t there at all...

youarenotkiddingme · 05/03/2019 17:58

Well we have to ring in.

But if I didn't then it would be 15-20 minutes before they knew I wasn't in.

Lord knows how long until they tried to contact me to find out why!

Sarcelle · 05/03/2019 18:00

A week.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 05/03/2019 18:01

Five minutes, company policy. This is because the loads are time-sensitive, and no one wants to drag a fully laden artic back 150 miles if the customer rejects it. I worked at one firm where the first half hour was unpaid, to get the checks done outside the tachograph. If you turned up at your official start time, it was frowned on. That lasted until the Ministry got video of the drivers working off-card, and everyone involved was nicked.

dudsville · 05/03/2019 18:03

This is a good one! I suspect they would notice immediately, after a little bit they'd check my diary, when it didn't correspond I think they'd shrug and presume something wasn't correct on their end. And for the record I am absolutely on top of my schedule, so if I didn't turn up there would definitely be something amiss. I just work in a bit of a laissez-faire office.

opinionatedfreak · 05/03/2019 18:06

On a clinical day people would notice after 30mins. And start phoning. This has happened.

Non clinical day - I have lots of meetings on lots of sites and sometimes work from home so no one would miss me in the office. It would only be if I missed a meeting that my absence would potentially be flagged.

I live on my own and am non clinical on Wed/Thursdays so I could take ill on a Tuesday evening and not be missed by anyone (colleagues/friends/family) until Friday morning...

Sobering!

NerrSnerr · 05/03/2019 18:11

I'd get an email about 2 hours later telling me I hadn't told them why whereabouts. Not sure how long it would take for them to worry though, there would be a lengthy conversation about whether I'm on leave or something.

boxlikeamarchhare · 05/03/2019 18:14

Some days I am in the office alone all day so it could be a day or two. Others a couple of hours.

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 05/03/2019 18:15

I'm a teacher so pretty much immediately!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 05/03/2019 18:17

I overslept by an hour once and had no idea (didn’t read the time right). I strolled into work at 10am and my colleagues were freaked out completely, thought i’d had a accident! Nice to know they cared Smile

HunterHearstHelmsley · 05/03/2019 18:18

A few hours. Maybe less on a busy meeting day.

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 05/03/2019 18:19

Probably an hour or two, but that's mostly my fault as my diary is rarely up to date and often plans change and have to be adapted. I'm often getting my knuckles rapped for it, not necessarily because they think I'm skiving but for safety reasons if no bugger knows where I am.

leghairdontcare · 05/03/2019 18:20

Last week my idiot manager text me 10 minutes before I was due in work to ask me where I was Confused Obviously I ignored it and then spent the first 5 minutes of my working day reminding her of my agreed hours.

littlemissalwaystired · 05/03/2019 18:24

10 minutes I bet. Would leave the unit in chaos if we randomly didn't show up.

behindlocknumbernine · 05/03/2019 18:28

25 minutes. I am a TA who supports a child with SEN. I think initially the teacher would wonder if she'd missed the notice I was ill. Then she'd wonder if maybe I have been held up somewhere else in the school. By the time guided reading has finished and the English lesson is about to start she'd send someone to look for me...

ASauvignonADay · 05/03/2019 18:28

About ten mins. School and the HR lead/someone from my team would come and knock on my door if I didn't show or answer the phone

grumpyyetgorgeous · 05/03/2019 18:32

Well I'm a teacher so the moment they noticed my kids standing uncollected on the yard. About 8.45 I suppose.

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 05/03/2019 18:33

About 3 mins before I'm due to take handover on a day shift. I'd probably get to two mins past if coming on a night shift.
I'd probably have a phonecall about 5 mins after my start time on either shift. And some exhausted colleagues!

ithinkmycatistryingtokillme · 05/03/2019 18:56

At opening time, due to my job they wouldn't be able to open if I wasn't on the premises

LittleMachine · 05/03/2019 19:00

If I even park in a different parking space I have people flying into my classroom in a panic thinking I’m not in 🙄 If I genuinely wasn’t there, my TAs would text or call by 8:50, school starts at 9.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 05/03/2019 19:01

I have anxiety about being late so I’m always in 15-20 mins before start time. I think it would be noticed that something is off within the first 5 minutes but I think they’d ring 30 minutes later.

Hiddenaspie1973 · 05/03/2019 19:02

30 minutes.
