How long would it take for people to notice you hadn’t turned up for work?

I mean, an unplanned absence. So just say, ex day. You decide “fuck it all, I’m staying in bed”.

And then just don’t tell anyone.

How long would it be until some rings//texts etc?

I reckon about 2hours for me.

About half an hour in my current job as there is only 2 of us but my colleague knows I catch the bus so would leave some time for it to be late.

In my old job it would be very quick as sadly my boss had an experience of someone not showing up and the outcome not being good so it made her very aware and worried if we weren’t there.

Lauren83 · 05/03/2019 09:16

I share an office with 1 other person who I'm
good friends with so if it got to an hour she would message me, if she was off probable not at all as people don't know my working pattern so would just presume I was off

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 05/03/2019 09:16

If my boss is around, probably about 10 minutes. If not, at least a day or so.

megletthesecond · 05/03/2019 09:19

15 mins and they'd worry.
Unless my boss was in a meeting then maybe an hour or so.

YahBasic · 05/03/2019 09:20

Depending on which day (I have calls I chair at 9am twice a week), my boss would be getting twitchy if I wasn’t on Skype at 9.30 and would text/call if I wasn’t by 10.

We’re based in different offices, so he’d probably contact my colleagues in this office to check I wasn’t having IT issues and then probably ring my husband.

kaytee87 · 05/03/2019 09:23

Straight away as I start seeing clients 15 minutes after I get in in the morning.

RiddleyW · 05/03/2019 09:23

Days potentially depending who was around.

M3lon · 05/03/2019 09:24

hmm...depends on time of year...

when I'm teaching undergrads it'd always get spotted within a few days...over the summer I would be gone months before anyone wondered...

Kahlua4me · 05/03/2019 09:25

Immediately. I work at home with dh so he would probably notice if I stayed in bed 😂

Ivegotthree · 05/03/2019 09:25

Ten mins max. Am vg friends with my colleagues and they would notice/mind straightaway.

delilabell · 05/03/2019 09:28

I'm in early so they'd think it was a bit odd I wasn't there when they arrived. Otherwise when my form were causing mayhem outside my classroom.

anniehm · 05/03/2019 09:31

On a good day nobody as I work alone but my boss does call somedays. Sneaking off is easy I admit but it's a crazy busy job so I'm the one who suffers as I'm the only one to catch up!

NicoAndTheNiners · 05/03/2019 09:31

About a week I reckon.

I've decided to work from home today, can't imagine anyone will ring to see where I am.

MojitoMojitoo · 05/03/2019 09:31

10 minutes if that.

I unlock the building so staff wouldn't be able to get in and if I don't book on within the 10 minutes I get an arsey phone call from the control room!

DailyMailFail101 · 05/03/2019 09:32

My Dads step sister died in the night and it took her work five weeks to inform the police, they found her in her bed x

Chapter1 · 05/03/2019 09:33

Ten minutes. If I don’t go the morning meeting eg get held up doing something else, I get a visit straight after from my boss.

MojitoMojitoo · 05/03/2019 09:36

DailyMailFail That is shocking! Sorry for your loss x

DowntonCrabby · 05/03/2019 09:36

That’s so sad dailymailfail Sad

We come in to relive another team member immediately so I’d be called/ call a colleague within 15-20 minutes.

ifoundthebread · 05/03/2019 09:36

In my last job I worked in a factory 7pm - 7am, my job role was to quality check parts before being sent out. Fortunately the 9pm order was finished by day shift as I over slept, was woken up by a co-worker from a different department ringing me as I hadn't taken our usual fag break at 9.30pm. He left work to pick me up, called to Mcdonalds to get a coffee, got to work around 10.15pm and no one noticed I hadn't been there or he'd left to collect me. Don't think they would have noticed till 6am when the next order wasn't ready 😬

Toooldtocareanymore · 05/03/2019 09:37

we had a colleague who didn't turn up one day, we just assumed that she had booked day off and the person involved with holiday leave had forgotten to put it in diary/messed up, next day no show we thought odd, holiday leave person double checked paperwork in case he had got wrong dates, then late morning we rang the person she was friendliest with at work, they didn't know anything , so only then we rang her so answer was one and a half days. Turned out she'd sent email saying her grandmother was dying, that we hadn't received.

JaneEyre07 · 05/03/2019 09:38

We had an employee not come in. They'd worked with us for 20 years, and was never once late or off sick. When they didn't come in and open up one morning, there was an awful feeling of concern and within 15 minutes, a colleague had gone to their home as it was local. It turns out the concern was justified..... they'd had a massive heart attack the night before and had died.

We're all still in shock over it, to be honest, a few months on. They were a lovely lovely person and a huge loss Sad

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 05/03/2019 09:53

My boss would probably text me after about half an hour.

Armi · 05/03/2019 09:59

By 9.00 there would be 30 teenagers shouting that their human rights were being violated as they had no teacher and their life chances were being wrecked.

JuniorAsparagus · 05/03/2019 10:03

I was a teacher. I would have been missed as soon as the Head realised she had to teach the class. Grin

SinkGirl · 05/03/2019 10:04

A few years ago when I lived in a flat, there was a buzz on my door at around 10am - the girl who lived below me hadn’t shown up for work and her boss and a colleague came looking for her. I hadn’t seen her.

At around 5pm the police were there breaking down her door, swiftly followed by paramedics - they tried to resuscitate her for a long time and she was alive when they took her to hospital but she passed away later on. She was only in her early 20s.

I was so impressed that her colleagues immediately were concerned and went looking for her, I only wish I had known she was so unwell. If it’s out of character for someone to just not show up and they’re not answering their phone I would hope people would go looking.
