JaneJeffer · 30/04/2019 20:14

I have an inch of Millennium candle left! Also have a certificate saying we have a family tree planted somewhere.

UnPocoLoco2 · 30/04/2019 21:49

Do you stop why you're doing each evening for the angelus?

UnPocoLoco2 · 30/04/2019 21:53

@dustarr73 nope I don't like crisp sandwiches myself.

UnPocoLoco2 · 30/04/2019 21:56

Anybody going to Ireland visit lahinch in co Clare. I was there one year in October. It was wet ( of course) but lovely.

UnPocoLoco2 · 30/04/2019 22:00

In my own experience ( and that of the Irish in Britain that I know of) if you've left Ireland the government doesn't seem to want you to return. They have made it very difficult to reintegrate into Irish life again, in terms of changing the welfare system, qualifications for certain jobs, mortgage requirements etc.

UnPocoLoco2 · 30/04/2019 22:42

Does your mam tell you to bring a cardigan?
Do you not wear your clothes until they are aired?
Do you remember the wooden spoon?
Do you use the good tea towels?
Do you get a mammy lecture for not going to mass?
Do you go on the lash?
Did you drink flat 7up when you were sick as a child?
So you keep minerals, buns and tayto in the press?

Sorry , I can't resist this. It's been ages since speaking ( typing!!) to an Irish person.

SrSteveOskowski · 01/05/2019 20:57

Never mind my not airing clothes, what REALLY horrifies my mother is the fact that I don't iron anything. The shame! Shock

Do I remember the wooden spoon? I'll never forget it!

It's been a while since I've been on the lash sadly :(

Yup, flat 7-up and Lucozade for 'dehydration'. Does Lucozade exist in the UK actually or is it an Irish thing? Like Golden Crisp bars.

Minerals, buns, taytos and the 'visitor' biscuits are all in the press. Those non ironed clothes and tea towels are in the hot press.

I have to hand it to you @UnPocoLoco2, you took a lot of Ireland back with you.

Jean Byrne on the weather. Morticia in a cocktail dress but half the nation’s males still would.

MIL was shocked when told she didn't need to her bulk buy of booze the thursday before good friday.
This usually consisted on her buying drink as if armageddon was coming "in case someone dropped in" as she could not live with "the shame of not being able to offer them a drink".
God knows who she was expecting, because she always got enough booze for a thirsty rugby team.

UnPocoLoco2 · 06/05/2019 12:55

@SrSteveOskowski lol yes I certainly did. I don't miss school, that was very difficult times but I do miss the other stuff and get a bit nostalgic from time to time.

UnPocoLoco2 · 06/05/2019 12:57

@SrSteveOskowski golden crisp bars brings back memories. Yeah lucozade is here but nobody except the Irish would think of drinking it flat when sick.
Also , I remember being called 'bold' as a child instead of 'naughty'

bellinisurge · 06/05/2019 13:06

Have you ever watched The Angelus?I mean really watched it.

Ivy44 · 06/05/2019 13:13

I remember being given flat lucozade as a child, whenever we had a stomach bug. This was in the north of England.

Just reading with interest, British and only ever been to Dublin. Would like to go to Cork and the West Coast at some point. Taytos are the best crisps!

UnPocoLoco2 · 06/05/2019 13:17

@TheMusicalFruit I've just looked her up on google and yes she does look like morticia .

UnPocoLoco2 · 06/05/2019 13:19

@Ivy44 really? I thought it was just an Irish thing? Perhaps brought over by Irish immigrants?

UnPocoLoco2 · 06/05/2019 13:21

@bellinisurge nope. Never. I used to just roll my 👀 as my parents or grandparents tuned in. The most boring thing ever on tv in my opinion.

Ivy44 · 06/05/2019 13:51

Re the lucozade. Don’t know if it was brought over by Irish immigrants. We lived in a country area that didn’t have a lot of Irish immigrants. I’ll ask my mum and see where she got it from.

JaneJeffer · 06/05/2019 13:54

Remember when the angelus was just a picture like this?

Did your family ( probably the older generation) butter eggs?? Is that just my family??

beanaseireann · 07/05/2019 18:44

Do you mean put butter on eggs ?

UnPocoLoco2 · 08/05/2019 09:47

No preserving eggs with butter for storage

JaneJeffer · 08/05/2019 10:37

I've never seen anyone do that.
