We were in Dublin, dustarr, southside. That’s great that your mum was able to keep you in 73. To be honest I think my grandparents treated my mother terribly, and it has affected her for the rest of her life.

PinkieTuscadero · 15/03/2019 14:36

mineallmine must be different schools, mine was Southside. But that must mean Gabriel Byrne had lots of friends from his teaching days who he kindly indulged by visiting their schools! Grin

JaneJeffer · 15/03/2019 14:52

Why was he visiting schools?!

PinkieTuscadero · 15/03/2019 14:56

Just to have a chat with the year about being a film star Grin

Is there a particular area that an O'Connor is likely to have come from? Pre-1900.

The 5ls of holy water selling the house fastGrin. I have to say I was amazed when the childminder we had for 6 years went to Lourdes and gave us a bottle of holy water as a present! She wasn't even there helping out with the disabled or sick pilgrims. She went on a freebe with her girlfriend who is a camera operator for a tv station and we know how the church loves that kinda carryon. I still have the bottle on top of one of the kitchen presses. Can't bring myself to throw it out or maybe it's because I'm afraid I'll be doomed to hell if I doGrin. My two dd's had to ask what it was and what it was used for!! Remember visiting my granny and when we were leaving she"d sprinkle it over us so we wouldn't come to harm on the 200 mile car journey home!

My mother still does this. Every time we go home for a visit, we leave again positively sopping, because she sprinkles extra for international journeys.

She also, many years ago, wrecked any possibility I had of being considered a cool au pair. I had barely left my home county before, and suddenly I was in Paris with pidgin school French, wearing a lot of black and planning to sit in cafes and read Camus in my spare time -- my luggage got lost on the way, and only showed up a day or two later, and as I was opening my suitcase in the hallway of the apartment in front of the family to check the contents were OK, a large Holy Mary bottle of Knock water bounced out from inside the lid and rolled halfway across the floor. I think the sophisticated Parisian parents thought I had come from another planet. Grin

MarDhea · 15/03/2019 17:08

Anyone else remember family members who lived in the UK in the 1980s - 90s bringing back poitín with them after a visit home to Ireland? Disguised as bottles of holy water so they wouldn't be stopped by customs?

Maybe just my family, so... 😬

ElspethFlashman · 15/03/2019 17:51

I was regularly doused with holy water until my Dad passed away which was not that ago! And yes, the car was splashed all over before we left for the journey back to the big smoke. You'd be mortified at him out in the driveway giving it the elbow like the bloody Pope and the water going everywhere. Mind you, if the neighbours did see they'd just nod and say "Are you off?" Totally normal!

We also had a bottle shaped like the Virgin Mary filled with poitín - the one where the cap was her blue crown. We had it years and years, it must have been rancid before we plucked up the courage to dump it behind my folks back.

SrSteveOskowski · 15/03/2019 18:07

I also have to confess to having a bit of a 'gra' for Dick.
Moran, obviously!

This! My mum's given name is Mary. But in good Cork tradition she goes by her middle name! A saints name of course. Two of my uncles married Mary's so they are known as uncle 'Larrys or whatever my uncle's name is' Mary as in Larry's Mary to distinguish between them. My middle name is Mary after my mother cause I'm the first born daughter. I had a granauntie Mary too. Even one of my daughters second name is May short for Mary. Also in my family my Granddad, my father and my first cousin have the exact same name! Forename and surname. There are a good few shortened forms of their first names though otherwise it would be very confusing!

There were two Bergin brothers, Emmet and Patrick...but by god they were handsome back in the day...

Quintella · 16/03/2019 14:28

Patrick was the psycho husband in Sleeping with the Enemy.

H0wt0kn0w · 16/03/2019 14:34

What happened to Irish actor Padraig O'Loinsigh. He was so goodlooking in The Cou rier, i thought he was destined for a great career!

noseoftralee · 16/03/2019 15:40

Wasn’t Patrick Bergin in Eastenders? With the actress who played Farrah in fair City?

beanaseireann · 16/03/2019 16:40

Patrick Bergin was scary in Sleeping with the Enemy.
I too thought Emmet Bergin was very easy on the eye.
What are they acting in now ?
The location of the house in Sleeping with the Enemy was amazing.
Sadly it no longer exists- I think it was just built for the film.

TheRealBoswell · 16/03/2019 16:50
