What is the general sentiment about Brexit?

Are people resentful of the many Brits who are suddenly formalising Irish citizenship?

x2boys · 02/03/2019 11:44

Have you ever been to Skibereen? My Dad, was born and lived there untill.he was 12, never been myself but I follow their Facebook page .

Deadringer · 02/03/2019 11:58

As a fellow Irish woman I have to ask if you get the rage as much as I do when posters here put Ireland in with the UK as part of their country???

PSA .... THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND IS NOT PART OF THE UK.

Peridot1 · 02/03/2019 12:22

I’m Irish too but live in uk. First time DH came over to Ireland with me we drove from Dublin to Galway for a few days. Checked into hotel and went wandering. Crossing Eyre Square a group of girls asked us to take a photo of them. Suddenly one calls my name. A few of them were neighbours. We then went into a restaurant for dinner. Waiting for a table and suddenly I get tapped on the shoulder - it was a guy from Cork that I used to work with in Dublin. So yes - I probably know Jack Murphy too!

And there is nothing better than a Tayto cheese and onion sandwich on Brennan’s bread with lots of butter. Yum.

Peridot1 · 02/03/2019 12:26

MeInGeneva - nothing surprises me about lack of knowledge tbh. First holiday I went on to Spain we met two English girls and got talking about the price of holidays. Theirs was much cheaper from London than ours had been from Dublin so they wanted to know why we didn’t just fly from London. On explaining we would have to fly to London they were surprised ‘you had to cross water to get from Dublin to London’.

dustarr73 · 02/03/2019 12:28

I must be the only Irish that doesnt like crisp sandwiches.

Pishogue · 02/03/2019 12:44

I don't like them either, dustarr -- I think of them as a disgusting English perversion, and a terrible waste of Taytos.

x2boys Skib is a nice town, and the gateway to some ravishing coastal countryside -- you should do a west Cork roadtrip.

When I first moved to England and applied for a National Insurance number, I nearly went apopleptic with rage as not just one but two people at the jobcentre said 'Oh, but just use your own home number', despite me repeatedly pointing out that I was not from Northern Ireland, but from an entirely separate country. Hmm

What is the general sentiment about Brexit?

It is like watching your next-door neighbour have a breakdown and try to saw himself to death with a blunt butterknife, incredibly slowly, and in the full knowledge that his pointless gesture has a potentially catastrophic impact on you.

elizabethdraper · 02/03/2019 12:59

Rip.ie is my homepage. Blush
My mam always got me to check for her. Now she has passed away it is just a habit!

At least 20 people from my work turned up to her funeral. 6 months later and I am still being brought out for coffee by work friends to check I am ok. It's nice

Wicklow is stunning definite location for staycation

As for brexit, I am so angry about the border issue. Everything else we can deal with.

Al2O3 · 02/03/2019 12:59

A few questions;

  1. Why is there a German community around central west Ireland?
  1. Is Fungi the dolphin still alive?
  1. Why do staff not approach you in bars to serve you (it seems like you need to shout your order at least twice before they take you seriously)?
  1. what is "bog-trotting" anyway?
  1. What do you do on a Saturday morning when it rains? What do you do at weekends?
Al2O3 · 02/03/2019 13:02
  1. Has dogging taken off yet as a mainstream recreational activity for the over 45's, in the way it has done so in deprived parts of the UK (such as Forest of Dean, Surrey and the Somerset Levels?
Peridot1 · 02/03/2019 13:06

Ooh - I’m near the Somerset Levels. Must take a look!

LadyGregorysToothbrush · 02/03/2019 13:13

Mainstream? Really? Shock

Fungi is still alive, although rumours abound that it’s a succession of cute Kerry hoors in a dolphin costume.

The barman/woman in Ireland is king. They are the ones in control.

BartonHollow · 02/03/2019 13:16

@Al2O3

what is bogtrotting?"

a person who lives or travels among bogs. Slang : Disparaging and Offensive . a contemptuous term used to refer to a native or inhabitant of Ireland

What actual trotting down to the bog is.

Burning Peat for fuel was once popular

In order to get peat briquettes you'd have to go dig the bog of turf

MeInGeneva · 02/03/2019 13:32

I had similar experience when I visited our corporate offices in London in my last job.

They were talking to me about "our" prime minister. No. No no no no no no. Independent (hard won btw) republic thanks very much.

Panicatthebistro · 02/03/2019 13:34

Does anyone know where you can get Taytos in the UK?

My DM bought some at airport when we flew back from Ireland and they were the best crisps I've ever eaten, fresh and tasty!

BartonHollow · 02/03/2019 13:38

@Panicatthebistro

Ah, well there's the rub

There's NI Tayto and ROI Tayto and a raging argument about superiority Grin

My preference is for ROI Tayto which I have struggled to find

NI Tayto turns up in Lidl and Home Bargains

RUMOUR has it however is that ALDI's own brand IS Tayto in the bag.

I've had them and I'm not ENTIRELY convinced but I do think they are very similar

ElspethFlashman · 02/03/2019 13:41

There's a massive Brazilian community in Gort.

So well established that I've heard the following "He's Brazilian" "Oh from Gort, is he?" "He is yeah"

Foreign nationals tend not to leave, so you get these hilarious accents where people are like "Sure like, zat iz ze way of it, entirely"

Al2O3 · 02/03/2019 13:46

Are planning laws fairly relaxed? Only I have noticed some fairly odd properties - HQ of international offices - stuck right in the middle of some areas of natural beauty. I am sure I passed a huge Dell or MS office block somewhere on the Kerry coast when last there.

Panicatthebistro · 02/03/2019 13:52

I won't say which airport then! Grin.
