Happy St Patrick's Day to you all.

Does anyone else have happy memories of

  • small-town parades featuring the local Irish dancing school heroically jigging up the main street, and local businesses driving their lorries at a snails pace behind them?
  • being allowed to break Lent? And sickening yourself...
  • being allowed to wear socks instead of tights for the first time of the year, and going blue with the cold/rain?

God, I am getting misty eyed...

ElspethFlashman · 17/03/2019 10:12

Welp, I'm about to head out to a parade exactly like that in a couple of hours, so my particular memories are gonna be crystal sharp, lol!

Fiontar649 · 17/03/2019 10:18

Have a great time Elspeth
I am home alone for the blissful weekend, and I am half-thinking of going to Dundrum for a bit of shopping.

Although this is tugging at my "ex-retail staff" principles, cos it's crappy to have to work today (unless you want to)

Happy St Patrick’s Day to all. Might have to get a Viennetta for dessert. We are having a very traditional dinner - lasagna! Grin.

Deadringer · 17/03/2019 11:38

We are off to a parade too, (not the main one, no notions here) and then off to McDonald's for our green milkshake. The sun is shining at the moment, but no doubt the traditional St Patrick's day driving rain and gale force wind will start 5 minutes before we leave the house.

Lá le Phádraig shona dhaoibh! Not in Ireland, but I have a line of ‘Across the Miles’ cards on the kitchen table, DS is wearing a selection of trad rosettes sent by his grandparents, and running around with some plastic shamrock maracas sent by his aunties, and earlier, from my train, I saw fifteen silent men wearing Guinness leprechaun hats standing on a platform.

BeGoodTanya · 17/03/2019 12:44

And yes, all my childhood parade memories are of a St Patrick in a cotton wool beard waving from the back of a double-glazing lorry in the sleet, followed by a shivering row of majorettes and the under-nine GAA team with blue legs.

SrSteveOskowski · 17/03/2019 13:09

This is the first Paddy's day I can ever remember where it hasn't been pissing down.
Surely some kind of record?

It's early yet Steve.

MadamBatty · 17/03/2019 13:42

Pissing here, I’m delighted as I wanted to hibernate today.

H0wt0kn0w · 17/03/2019 15:00

Im celebrating st patricks day by not leav8ng the house. Blanket on sofa. Kettle on. Netflix chromecasting.
Im sO'happy. Very sunny un Dublin. But still. No reason to leave the sofa.

Quintella · 17/03/2019 15:02

Mass
O'Connell Street for the parade - complete with old skool rosette and plastic tricolour to wave
Break of the lenten fast
Zoo
Home for bacon and cabbage

(that was our 1980s St Patrick's Day)

ElspethFlashman · 17/03/2019 15:26

Thunderous downpour today. Felt sorry for all the cross dressing boyos on the Trump float who were dressed in skimpy dresses as his horde of prostitutes. They were soaked to the skin and looked freezing!

The Mexican drugs cartel at least had long sleeves!

beanaseireann · 17/03/2019 15:40

Elspeth are you in US ?
Grand here in Dublin.

I remember one glorious art Patrick's Day with the sun beating down and eating out at our local Smile
It's memorable because it's so rare !

H0wt0kn0w · 17/03/2019 15:42

Omg the hailstones!!

MarDhea · 17/03/2019 15:46

As is traditional on Paddy's Day:

☔️ Freezing rain

⚪️ Startling hailstones

😎 Occasional blinding sunshine

ElspethFlashman · 17/03/2019 15:50

God no, I'm in the Wesht. There also was a float about the new Children's Hospital with all these corrupt politicians with zips taped over their mouths, it was a bit macabre!

The lads in the tractors and the vintage cars were the only ones who escaped that parade without being drenched to the bone. We were all jealous of them!

Quintella · 17/03/2019 15:54

Merciful hour. What would Dev say to that! Grin

beanaseireann · 17/03/2019 16:19

Ah Elspeth there was I thinking you were in NYC and envying you.
Although the Wesht sounds lovely too.

ManorMouse · 17/03/2019 16:39

Merciful hour. What would Dev say to that!

"They're doing WHAT at the Crossroads now?"

Quintella · 17/03/2019 16:45
Grin

'Well you see, Eamon, they're kind of like comely maidens only they're maidens with, ummmmm, willies...'

His hand will be reaching out from the Glasnevin earth!

SrSteveOskowski · 19/03/2019 16:46

@TheRealBoswell, here you go. A flavour of Irish accents Smile

His son’s girlfriend then went on to ‘get herself’ pregnant the following year. The hypocrisy was shocking. It was definitely seen as her fault.

I remember when that phrase was commonly used. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so misogynistic and judgemental.
Immaculate conception???!

BartonHollow · 20/03/2019 23:27

Like St Paddy's Day to the British/American what a piss up

Me (when in Ireland) : Jesus Christ I have to sit through mass in Irish and avoid a tinpot National School parade in the Square whilst saying "sure, aren't they grand?"

BartonHollow · 20/03/2019 23:28

WESHT is very much the family accent

SCHNOW for snow etc
