Ah ha! I KNEW she was lurking somewhere! Look who I found while cleaning out the spare room wardrobe.
Not the original version (though give it time and I'm sure that will appear too) but the English translation.

All the horror has come flooding back Confused

Why SrSteve?Shock

Lisette1940 · 28/04/2019 18:12

I did the Leaving 30 years ago and I'm still traumatised by that woman.

UnPocoLoco2 · 28/04/2019 18:26

I lived in Ireland for a long time and to be honest found it a bit depressing with all the rain and high cost of food.
Does that annoy you? Also in schools ( in my opinion and experience- don't flame me) the kids are complete bullies and the teachers turn a blind eye more than in Britain .

UnPocoLoco2 · 28/04/2019 18:34

A bit more light hearted.Do you
1 eat batchelors beans, chef ketchup, spice bags, tayto, Brennan's bread, kerrygold??

  1. Lyons or Barry's tea?
  2. Do you talk about the weather?
  3. Do you watch gaa? Football or hurling?
  4. Do you love daithi and Daniel?
  5. Do you like 'spin the wheel'?
SrSteveOskowski · 28/04/2019 18:35

@JaneJeffer, probably just from seeing her face again! Same as @Lisette1940.

@UnPocoLoco2, I suppose we're so used to the rain by now, but wouldn't say no to a bit more sun. Still I suppose it's not called the Emerald Isle for nothing ☘️
Food is definitely more expensive here as opposed to the UK, especially eating out. I have a close friend in the UK and go over quite a bit and eating out there seems so much cheaper. I think UK supermarket prices are catching up with Irish ones though.
As regards bullying in school. It's about 20 years since I did my leaving so I can't really comment on that.

JaneJeffer · 28/04/2019 18:36

We're a tough lot UnPoco. Sure if it wasn't raining what would we complain about? I think schools have improved a lot with regard to bullying though.

JaneJeffer · 28/04/2019 18:37

SrSteve I meant why did you post that? The horror!

JaneJeffer · 28/04/2019 18:41

Bachelors and Tayto all the way! Talk about the weather constantly . Love GAA Grin

SrSteveOskowski · 28/04/2019 18:48

Oops, sorry @JaneJeffer Grin

@UnPocoLoco2, Batchelors beans for sure. NO to Chef ketchup, has to be Heinz. Chef is way too vinegary. I'm not mad on spice bags, find them very salty to be honest, and I must be one of few Irish people that doesn't really like Taytos, or crisps in general really. I'm definitely more sweet than savoury. Any slice pan will do me but yes, it definitely has to have Kerrygold on top.
Barrys for sure - daycent like ;)
Sure what else would I talk about?
Nah, even though I'm a culchie I've no interest in GAA
I don't like Daniel, but I don't mind Daithi, but lets be honest here. When it comes to Kerrymen then Michael Healy Rae beats them all ;)
Dear God no. My inlaws have some sort of obsession with 'spin the wheel'. MIL is only waiting for her 3 stars to come out. Only waiting these past 30 or so years I mean. Is it still Marty and his little tash?

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 28/04/2019 18:53

Michael Healy Rae beats them all ;) I can't talk to you any more

BillywigSting · 28/04/2019 19:00

Jesus wept op that cover is giving me flashbacks!

Also love the gaa but have a friend from 'the people's republic of Cork' who will not stop lording over me just how shit wicklow is. Gets very old very quickly.

On a totally unrelated note, I walked past the (Catholic) church on Ash Wednesday and the thrill of not having to walk around all with a sodding great black smudge all over my forehead still hasn't worn off Grin

Lisette1940 · 28/04/2019 19:03

I remember someone in school had a copy of 'PEIG' where her name was amended to read 'BITCH'.

qazxc · 28/04/2019 19:10

Who is "yer man"?
Do you also have a draw of random shite with the millenium candle and the (now out of date) tablets we are meant to take if Sellafield blows up?
When did they stop having slow sets and the national anthem in nightclubs?

SrSteveOskowski · 28/04/2019 19:11

@JaneJeffer, I've met him before. Gas man.

OP posts:
SrSteveOskowski · 28/04/2019 19:14

@BillyWigSting, ah the real capital Grin

@qazxc, "Yer man" - d'you mean 'what's his name'?
I have no recollection of a millenium candle, but those tablets are possibly still in the back of the press somewhere
It's been a while since I've been in a nightclub sadly :(

My DS was a toddler when the iodine tablets arrived in the post. I left them on the worktop. He got them open and there was a couple missing when I found him and one half of another one. He couldn't tell me where they were or if he had eaten them! I have never told DH about this and DS is 20 now and seems to be alright Blush

BillywigSting · 28/04/2019 19:22

Yer man is whoever you are about to start gossiping talking about, Eg, did ya hear yer man paddy fell off his ladder and broke his skull last week?

Barry's is the only acceptable tea (and should be brewed until it is chewy)

Hurling over football (though a friend of mine from the people's republic of Cork needs to shut up about it). Camogie is good too.

UnPocoLoco2 · 28/04/2019 19:27

What's your view on the whole NAMA saga?

AhhhHereItGoes · 28/04/2019 22:00

This may be an inherently stupid question but what are the biggest differences between ROI and NI?

I was born in NI and both my parents are from there. I've not visited the ROI since I was a child and was interested in the differences in customs, housing, pop culture etc.

3luckystars · 28/04/2019 22:06

I saw a thread here the other day and your one was going to give £100 to her SIBLING getting married. I didn't reply, because I didn't know what to say.

I have never been to an English wedding, but there must be a huge difference between English and Irish weddings, because a lot of posters were agreeing.

BillywigSting · 29/04/2019 12:13

The last Irish wedding I went to didn't finish until about four in the morning, I was only a teenager though so not sure what the deal is regarding gifts. The English weddings all seem to be done and squared off by midnight. The irish one was just getting properly started by that time! (the reception obviously, the ceremony was mid morning)

Funerals are very different too. I much prefer Irish funerals. They get them in ground much quicker, usually a week tops after the person has died so there's no hanging around, but there's a day before where everyone can pay their last respects and say goodbye, and wakes tend to be pretty jolly all things considered. See a lot more children at Irish funerals too.

qazxc · 29/04/2019 16:37

For weddings, the cash in the card is €50 for a single person or €150 for a couple. That's the going rate we have paid for the last weddings we have been invited to, not relatives or close friends most of them have been colleagues. I've never seen any sign of a gift list or seen anyone showing up with packages so am assuming that gifts are not the done thing.

UnPocoLoco2 · 30/04/2019 20:05

@JaneJeffer lol I remember the iodine tablets. I must have been about 11 or 12 then

UnPocoLoco2 · 30/04/2019 20:10

@qazxc I remember the millennial candle. I think it's still in my mums press.
