Handhold please.. ds head injury on school trip...

So ds2 (14) is on a school skiing trip. They went to a pool with flumes tonight and somehow he's banged his head and can't talk properly which is utterly out of character....

School staff have been amazing, he's been taken by ambulance to a regional centre for scans but my lovely boy is hundreds of miles away, going through scary stuff and I can't be with him. He had severe asthma as a child so hospitals aren't a new thing but not in a country where he doesn't know the language and doesn't have one of us with him.

I'm sitting here catching up on Masterchef while we wait for school to update us, trying not to be upset because I'm the one who doesn't do tears...

Anyone have any experience of this or things to distract me? Sad

Your poor boy, I hope he’s ok, good to hear his teachers are looking after him. Keep us updated how he is.

Oh, you poor thing! You must be going out of your mind with worry. I hope you get an update soon. As it’s a skiing trip, I assume he is somewhere with great medical care.

Hand hold my dc had two bad head bangs one where they stopped breathing and the other where they lost consciousness and after a long sleep were fine. Thinking of you and your child tonight 💐

He's in Italy, tbh the last thing I thought we'd have to worry about was the swimming pool...

Oh gosh, what a worry- I’m sure he’ll be fine but I know how you feel. My ds hurt himself when I was in another country and it was rubbish- I felt so guilty even though it wasn’t my fault in any way!

Have a little cry if you need to- it’s nothing to be ashamed of or you being a let down or something.

Id probably be spending the waiting time pricing up flights etc bit that’s how I cope by just going into some mad overdrive of trying to have a bit of control!

When is he due home normally?

Hand hold. He will not be alone and his teachers will make sure that he gets everything he needs. They will be so upset that he has been injured on a school trip so really will look after him as if he was their own. Once you know more you will at least be able to plan what to do next.

When is he due home ?

I'd fly out there tonight or tomorrow if you possibly can. Even if everything turns out absolutely fine it will have been an ordeal.

Don't go googling flights until you are sure you need to fly, repeated googling puts the prices up.

The trip has insurance for a parent to travel ask the school to claim on your behalf

I can only offer reassurance from personal experience of having family in Italy that healthcare there is excellent. So even though it may be strange and in another language I'm sure he'll be getting very good care. Many hospitals gave volunteer translators - might be worth asking?

Thanks all, ds plays lots of rugby and that's where I'd always assumed he'd get his injuries Hmm

School have just called - there was nothing on the scan thank goodness but he's just spoken to dh and sounded very out of it.

My ds has had a brief, random concussion - slightly bizarre conversation, then saw stars and projectile vommed everywhere. Your ds is in the best place (hospital), scans are ok...after a sleep and a couple of days recuperation am sure he’ll be right!! Hand hold💐

I fell and banged my head many years ago and ended up in hospital. I made no sense at all and could hardly even stand. It settled. He’s being monitored and the human body is amazing at healing itself. Here’s hoping he’s more like himself very soon.
