So ds2 (14) is on a school skiing trip. They went to a pool with flumes tonight and somehow he's banged his head and can't talk properly which is utterly out of character....

School staff have been amazing, he's been taken by ambulance to a regional centre for scans but my lovely boy is hundreds of miles away, going through scary stuff and I can't be with him. He had severe asthma as a child so hospitals aren't a new thing but not in a country where he doesn't know the language and doesn't have one of us with him.

I'm sitting here catching up on Masterchef while we wait for school to update us, trying not to be upset because I'm the one who doesn't do tears...

Anyone have any experience of this or things to distract me? Sad

Oh no, how worrying for you. Our
DD lives in Verona, close to a few ski resorts, please let me know if we can help in any way as we are used to flying that route frequently.
I am sure that his teachers and medical staff are taking excellent care of him. Italy has very good health care.

I had concussion after a head injury, didn't know my name are anything but after a good nights sleep I was fine. Great news about the scan.

xalyssx · 20/02/2019 23:11

When I was 10 I went to France with the school, I had an accident and had to go to hospital overnight... I was absolutely delighted! People made such a fuss over me, my headteacher stayed in the hospital with me and I felt so comfortable that I refused to have my mum come and look after me.

YouWinAgain · 20/02/2019 23:12

The health care in Italy is very good and most of the hospitals will have English speaking Drs and Nurses so he'll be ok (my family regularly travel out there and end up having hospital stays). Glad the scan is clear.

Maladicta · 20/02/2019 23:12

He'll certainly be kept in tonight, we're waiting to hear what they say should happen next.

It's another thing to add to the list of ways dcs can cause you stress...

Again, thanks for being there. Dh doesn't cope with 'serious' stuff very well so rational conversation is pretty much out of question.

Maybe concussion OP are they keeping him in? When are they due to return?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/02/2019 23:13

Mal DS1 suffered a concussion 10 weeks ago. He had six weeks off work and he’s still not fully better. Getting there though. Your boy will need sleep and rest and quiet, definitely shouldn’t be encouraged to push on through.

I’d be tempted to bring him home to be honest, good care now will make his recovery much quicker.

JustOneShadeOfGrey · 20/02/2019 23:13

I'm holding your hand OP. It's such a difficult thing to deal with so far away.

Personally, I'd be on the next plane over but it probably wouldn't get him any better treatment. I don't wrap my children with cotton wool and was actually told by a psychologist that I need to be more empathetic!! But a genuine injury like your DS has suffered would have me insisting on seeing him via video to reassure him and me, if I was able to stop myself getting on the next flight!!

I hope he's ok xx

DishingOutDone · 20/02/2019 23:13

Oops cross posted. It may be much better in the morning I know you will be so worried I would be, definitely holding all hands here OP.

Maladicta · 20/02/2019 23:14

His school do the trip overland to keep costs down, we'll definitely need to have a conversation about how he comes back - they're due to leave Friday, arriving home Saturday.

NotMySquirrel · 20/02/2019 23:15

Hope everything is OK, OP. Thinking of you and your DS. Will you be flying out to him?

MollyHuaCha · 20/02/2019 23:17

Hope he feels a lot better very soon.

TheMaddHugger · 20/02/2019 23:17

Ohh Wow (((((((Madd Madd Hugs))))))))))😲😔

DishingOutDone · 20/02/2019 23:18

Yes see what can be done maybe via the insurance or literally he just gets an accompanied flight home on Friday.

I really hope he's fine in the morning, but you can get advice from the Child Brain Injury Trust they are fabulous you can just have a chat on the phone they'll advise what to look out for and what to say to staff etc - my DD had a head injury at school so they know all the ins and outs of who should do what:

Maladicta · 20/02/2019 23:18

We're waiting to hear from school as to whether or not we should go out. I'm very much 'get on with things' as is ds but I think this will have shaken him.

Thank you Tinkly for your experience, he's not going to be amused when I tell him rugby's off for a few weeks.

I just want him home Sad

AdoraBell · 20/02/2019 23:19

Glad the scan was clear OP, hope he feels much better after some rest.

puppy23 · 20/02/2019 23:20

Really hope he has a fast recovery and is home soon, sending love to you all

BrizzleMint · 20/02/2019 23:20

Being in is the best thing for him, they will be on hand to give medication in case of a evil headache later. If it's like most skiing trips with schools they will have a rep from the company with them who will help and the school will have a teacher with him.

He's just getting your money's worth out of the ehic card, very considerate of him really Grin

ineedaholidaynow · 20/02/2019 23:24

Oh OP, this must be such a worry. Have to admit I would be like your DH and my DH would be like you in this situation.

Slightly different scenario but my quite elderly DM had a fall a few years ago and hit her head. Was very confused, initially doctors thought this was just down to her age but then did a scan and found a bleed on the brain. With added heart complications DF and I were told that evening to expect the worse. Next morning DM was sitting up in bed eating her breakfast without a care in the world Smile She made a full recovery.

Here’s hoping after a night in hospital your DS will also be making the most of the hospital breakfast Flowers

Bowchicawowow · 20/02/2019 23:24

If the scan is clear he’s fine. Concussion is not pleasant but he will recover in time.

Devonishome1 · 20/02/2019 23:26

I hope that he’s ok OP. My dd is also skiing in Italy with school in Bormio. I’m sure he’ll be fine. It’s hard for you being so far away from him.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/02/2019 23:26

Mal seriously rugby should be off for a few months. A concussion on top of a concussion can cause permanent damage or even be fatal.

I’ve read up far too much about concussion in the last few weeks.

GiantKitten · 20/02/2019 23:27

My DD (then in late 20s) got concussion when she crashed her car - she went off the edge of the road, & the car spun through 360 degrees, though she didn't hit her head as far as we know. She was bloody lucky though.

Anyway her speech, memory, recollection & general intelligence took a massive dive for weeks, it was weird. She now remembers literally nothing of that period but did recover all her faculties eventually Smile

Good luck, OP. Great that scan is clear. If he's well, and not anxious, then although it'll be hell for you I'd trust the staff to look after him & bring him home Flowers

confusednorthner · 20/02/2019 23:28

What a nightmare, especially so far from home. I'm sure his teachers are doing a brilliant job while you can't be with him.
I'm up waiting on news from hospital re my mum as my dad has just phoned to say she's gone rapidly downhill. I'm at least in same country but feel helpless too.
I'm a planner so I'm your situation would be making plans in case needed.

SleepWarrior · 20/02/2019 23:28

Great that he's OK and scans are clear.

Be aware of SIS (second impact syndrome, look it up) and the importance to be completely symptom free before doing any activities that come with a concussion risk.
