Or have I but they’re just too ashamed to admit it?

Stripyhoglets · 20/02/2019 22:43

I know some at work - I don't discuss it with them as they are in denial about the EU. I cba to discuss it with them as they just blame the EU.

southnownorth · 20/02/2019 22:43

Your whole opening post is one smug fest OP. Like you mix in better circles. Why would they be ashamed to admit it?

Caselgarcia · 20/02/2019 22:44

Really? Not one? Do you not get out much?

ManonBlackbeak · 20/02/2019 22:45

I know loads sadly. I live in an area that overwhelmingly voted to leave, and they will quite happily tell all anyone who will listen that they did so and would do again. Local social media is full of the spouting off about the 'will of the people' and when presented with facts about Brexit they get very angry and resort to insults: 'remoaner' and snowflake' being their favourites.

They are all without fail, well over 40 and fit the gammon stereoptype perfectly. Thick as mince as well, the immigrants they complain about usually have a better grasp of the English language..

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/02/2019 22:46

I’m a leaver. I know loads. I also know loads of remainers. Stupid thread. It’s about 50/50 and I don’t believe known of the people you know voted leave.

tictac86 · 20/02/2019 22:47

Full on leaver and don't regret it one bit

ScafellPoke · 20/02/2019 22:47

casels kind of pointed that out for you south.... I am likely to have met some as I do get out, alot! However, leavers don’t seem to be as vocal as non leavers. Yes because they won, but why don’t they want to defend their decision, especially if they are being accused of racism? Is it because they are ashamed? I’m not being smug, I’m looking for an answer!

OP posts:
southnownorth · 20/02/2019 22:47

Thick as mince

There you go again, attitudes I only read on here. Would you say that to someones face? What makes you so special?

ScafellPoke · 20/02/2019 22:48

Only stupid people comment on threads they find stupid

OP posts:
IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 20/02/2019 22:48

Of course you have. 52% of those who CBA to vote wanted to leave.
Most people probably don't discuss it at the school gate or at work, in the same way that they wouldn't discuss religion or how they vote in a general election. It's not considered appropriate or polite conversation. It's also divisive - no one is changing their minds and so what's the point in getting into a disagreement with people we see every day and need to get along with?
Mostly I can't be bothered debating it on MN. Remainers on here are determined to believed we are all thick, racist twats and I'm not going to waste hours of my life trying to convince total strangers that I'm not. In the end, I don't know you so it doesn't matter.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 20/02/2019 22:49

I’m not ashamed of my vote. We’re leaving, there’s nothing to defend. Sorry OP, unsure what you want from this thread 🤷‍♀️

ScafellPoke · 20/02/2019 22:49

I wouldn’t call anyone thick as mince to their face as much as I would call someone clever as fuck to their face either. I’m not one for pointing things out to people, whether good or bad

OP posts:
ScafellPoke · 20/02/2019 22:51

I don’t think that iwanna but I am wondering why you’re commenting on a thread of a topic you avoid debating on?

OP posts:
Tiredandquiteemotional · 20/02/2019 22:56

My DH is one.

Well educated, speaks two European languages fluently, works in the City of London.

He thinks the EU is undemocratic and can argue his case quite coherently.

We may well be hit in the pocket by Brexit but he thinks this is worthwhile in the longer term interests of the country.

I respect his views. He may be right, I may be wrong. I remain of the view that the remain campaign gave us reasons not to leave rather than to stay. I went for better the devil you know but can understand why others felt differently.

Having grown up outside se (where I now life), I can completely understand why so many feel the system as it is doesn't work for them.

Frosty26827 · 20/02/2019 22:57

A leaver? Do you mean someone who leaves lights on when they leave the room or the door open when the heating is on? No?
You mean someone who needs to justify their vote to you...why? What has their vote got to do with you? You had yours, they had theirs ... end of.

swampytiggaa · 20/02/2019 22:59

I’m married to one 😢 plus I live in the south west which is full of leavers. Who are now complaining about losing EU subsidies for farming and fishing.

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 20/02/2019 23:00

I said I mostly avoid it. Sometimes I get sucked in

Windowsareforcheaters · 20/02/2019 23:00

He thinks the EU is undemocratic

I'd like to hear his argument because he is wrong. The EU is a democratic organisation. It could be argued the form of democracy in the EU could be improved but from a country with FPTP, an unelected second chamber, and a parliament described as an 'elective dictatorship' it all sounds very hollow.

Leavers all have brilliant arguments they can't share for a variety of complex reasons.

Tiredandquiteemotional · 20/02/2019 23:01

Windows

Tiredandquiteemotional · 20/02/2019 23:02

Windows, he has similar qualms about this country, particularly the House of Lords.

Sadly we haven't been given a vote on this recently.

Windowsareforcheaters · 20/02/2019 23:06

Leaving the EU because of concerns about democracy to hand all the power over to a significantly less democratic system is a difficult argument to swallow. Like many leaver arguments.

And this is why many leavers keep quiet, the headline point sounds fine but when pushed it all crumbles. As we have all become more educated on these topics the arguments look weaker and weaker.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 20/02/2019 23:06

I know a few who now no longer debate the subject not because they have changed their minds but because they don’t fit into the idea of many remainers and get insulted

I don’t think if we had another vote remain would win

Sadly we are leaving the quicker this happens the better now

Tiredandquiteemotional · 20/02/2019 23:09

I'm not here to make the argument for leave, I voted remain.

But I can see why people might have voted leave and can respect their views - which seems to put me in a minority position.

redeyetonowheregood · 20/02/2019 23:10

I know of 4. Two are parents of friends of mine (different friends). Two are my dad and his wife. I know of none my generation of friends or colleagues, but I am an academic, so unlikely to meet any.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 20/02/2019 23:12

Only stupid people comment on threads they find stupid
This is what I meant about your attitude. You’ve said you’ve not met a leaver and surmised they are ashamed.
So people have come on to say they’re leavers but find your “ ashamed” comment unnecessary .And then according to you they are stupid for coming on the thread in first place.
It’s a no win.
Leavers don’t have to argue or justify themselves because the vote went their way, Remainers want to argue their point because it didn’t. So leavers are bound to be less vocal, obviously.
