Did anyone else's mum give them a food nobody you speak to has heard of?

Although with mumsnet I bet others have had 'it:
In my case it's a' treat' of Cabbage Water
Basically when she cooked (boiled) cabbage (which was with a chopped onion, pepper and nutmeg) I could have a cup of the water after (veg stock I suppose)
I did see it as a treat and am drinking some now, remembering her fondly.

I liked Sosmix, I haven't seen any for years. And the concentrated pear thing. And miso soup made with miso paste from a deli that was ahead of its time.

We used to drink cabbage water, very very salty and boiling hot. I think it was supposed to contain vitamin C.

Before ventolin was around, my nana used to give me white bread with very thick butter, sprinkled with a lot of sugar, when my asthma got bad! If that didn't work my papa would boil the kettle, put it in a bowl and get me to breathe the steam.

Maybe I'll try it next time instead of ventolin!! Although was in hospital all the time when I was wee. So maybe not!!

Egg in a mug. Was basically a soft boiled egg (runny yolk essential) with buttered bread. She would tear the bread into small pieces and put it in a mug, then add the egg and a dash of salt and pepper. Then she'd mix and mash the whole thing up with a fork, which is why the runny yolk is essential. So easy but absolutely delicious.

My mum used to quarter an egg, put them in a special bowl, add tinned tuna, white sauce (sometimes mixed with sweet corn), topped with cheese and crushed crisps. Then under the grill. Really yummy, keep threatening to recreate it but know it won’t taste as good as my memory remembers it.

Was anyone else given Symington's table cream for pudding?
It was a powder that came in little boxes and different flavours that made a sort of blancmange thing. My favourite was butterscotch.

Oh an my dad used to make croutons. Just croutons. We’d sit there with s hole of croutons and eat them as if they were pop corn or crisps.

@GahWhatever I remember the little onions in white sauce, but no-one else ever does. I always think of them at Christmas as we used to have them with Christmas dinner as they were so special!
And I remember having "Chinese gooseberries" in NZ in the seventies.

My mother used to make the most vile dish. It was rice cooked in beer, to which she added slices of tinned spam and would serve with a topping of crushed crisps.

That's child cruelty, that is 😂😂😂

I wouldn't eat fish as a child, but my mother always coated fish with flaked porridge and the outside would go all crisp when fried. It was probably quite nice for anyone who ate fish, and it did look lovely.

Tinned tomatoes on toast.
Philadelphia cream cheese on cucumber slices.
Bread soaked in milk with sugar sprinkled on top.

@BarkandCheese I haven't thought about that recipe for ages! We had the set of cards when I was little too and my Mum gave them to me a few years ago :)

@AutumnCrow How would you describe a rissole? I’m from Sheffield and we call our fish cakes rissoles (mashed up fish and potato in batter). Our fish cakes are 3 layers, potato/fish/potato in batter.

Anyone have volcanoes? Aka sausage, beans and mash with the sausages standing up out of the top of the pile of mashed potatoes, beans being the lava. Loved that!

Cheesy dip
Cheese, milk and sliced onions, on a plate, then roasted, for what seemed like hours. Crispy on top, and dippy, deliciousness underneath Grin

Looks like the little onions in white sauce are still available in the US, but not the UK :(

Oh and fairy bread. White bread with butter and hundreds and thousands. No one here seems to know what it is but it was a party food staple when I was a child.

Not that rare but vile and not eaten much nowadays if at all Boiled tripe. I remember it cooing in a saucepan and it had a roughish furry texture. DM loved it

@Herja that smooth jam thing was available in Holland and Barrett, it was in a shallow pot, made from fruit juice but kind of solid. I think the base was apple or pear juice and it was flavoured with other fruit, I don't remember the name but I used to get it, probably in the 80's or 90's.
