Did anyone else's mum give them a food nobody you speak to has heard of?

Although with mumsnet I bet others have had 'it:
In my case it's a' treat' of Cabbage Water
Basically when she cooked (boiled) cabbage (which was with a chopped onion, pepper and nutmeg) I could have a cup of the water after (veg stock I suppose)
I did see it as a treat and am drinking some now, remembering her fondly.

We used to have cheese and jam sandwiches! None of us kids liked cheese sandwiches so mum put a smear of jam inside as well to 'sweeten' the deal!! They were lovely Grin. She also used to make 'dippy egg' sandwiches after a party or picnic when there were leftovers which had gone a bit stale. Dip said sandwich into beaten egg and fry until browned (bit like eggy bread/french bread). Getting hungry now!

@jocktamsinsbairns. Not just you... but for us the fried egg was an ocasional treat... sometimes it was just browed and boiled mince with bread dipped in. My mum maintained that we were lucky not to have oatmeal mixed in...

Grilled cheese for us kids: just a plate, completely covered in grilled cheddar and melted under the grill.

For the adults, she would crack an egg in the middle of the plate, then put on grated cheese and cook under the grill (all the kids in our family were allergic to egg).

My Nan used to give me plain boiled rice, no salt, with a spoonful of golden syrup on it.

My Mother relied heavily on tinned food for my evening meal as she worked shifts, she’d just leave whatever I was having out for me to heat up - there was a Fray Bentos chicken curry that I liked. A Crosse & Blackwell chicken curry that had the curry at one end and rice at the other. Tinned mince and baked beans (very sloppy). Tinned burgers and baked beans. She liked tinned food right up until her old age.. Strangely, she was actually a very good cook when she wanted to make the effort.

Worst thing was when she decided I was getting fat and made me live on Energen Rolls for weeks..

My mum mixed grated carrot and cheese and mixed in salad cream

I don't know it it's a northern thing, but DP had never heard of this. Cheese Savoury? It would be grated cheese, carrots, onions and some sort of salad cream / mayo. Usually found in sandwiches in local sandwich shops. Bloody lush, but never see it in the midlands.

My mam used to make this weird cheesey / bacon soup. I'm not sure what it was apart from salty and fatty and would hurt my stomach lol!

She also puts mushy peas on a roast, but that's lush!

We used to drink water from the vegetables because it was ‘full of vitamins.’ In those days people cared about Dc having enough vitamins and minerals from their food. I always try to make gravy using water from the veg. It’s probably pointless though.

@Herja I've had sosmix, from our local health food shop. Also soya cubes, replica beef chunks I guess which my mum rehydrated.

Curried egg and spinach. Never seen it anywhere else and people make funny faces when I mention it. It was SO good though but the recipe went with mum Sad

DM made "curry" in the 70s....cheap mince, onion and curry powder! Served on homemade chips!

Tuna mashed with cottage cheese and onion. We called it cement because that's what it looked like. Very tasty though.

My mum made toasted sandwiches in the Breville but instead of cheese it was hamburgers and tomato sauce!

@Alsonification yes! Coddle is amazingly delicious. My grandpa also used to do a lovely mashed potato with curly kale thing, decades before kale got all trendy . With tons of butter and milk. Mmmmm

My mum used to slice cumcumber into a bowl of vinegar when she was doing a nice buffet at Christmas or special occasions, never in all my puff seen anyone else do that I assume it was a 70s thing she still did in the 80s!

My Dad used to put chips in his soup. Everyone at his works canteen thought he was mental but he insisted it was a Yorkshire thing, again, never seen anyone else do it!

My dad used to make us cup surprises. It was a plastic cup filled with ice cream and whatever we had in the kitchen, bits of chocolate, fruit, biscuits. So lush!

My dad used to take us blackberrying, then when we got home he'd make a massive "muesli pancake", which was like a thick cake of muesli with sugar and beaten egg to bind it. Then stew the blackberries and spread them over the top. It was heavenly.
