Oh and all this must pass by Keaton Henson

ShowOfHands · 13/02/2019 22:11

White Wine in the Sun, Tim Minchin
Love Letters, Ketty Lester
Abide With Me (I'm not religious at all so no idea why)

Old rugged cross, Mike and the Mechanics- In the living years are just 2 of the songs I can't listen to without crying - both my parents died in 2017 within 11 weeks of each other - they were all I had and although I was 33 and pregnant with my baby girl, I needed my Mum and Dad more than anything.

Toomuchgoingon · 13/02/2019 22:40

Shining Kristian Leontiou. Chorus is I will not be beaten, you have yet to see me shining.....i won't take this lying down". It was on the CD in my car on the way back from the hospital when I lost my baby.

Silent Night - playing on the radio when my mum died on Xmas Day.... Sleep in Heavenly Peace

And I'll Stand By You - Chrissie Hynde when endless visiting my dad in the hospice when he died....

On a happier note, Bangles Eternal Flame from my wedding day.

Drive Like I've Never Been Hurt by Ry Cooder. It makes me sob every single time. I read it as about someone who's been beaten down by a critical partner but then finds the confidence to leave and find their own way in life.

I don't relate to it myself especially but it reminds so many of my clients over the years and how brave they are 😭

Although this song did not come out while I was in high school, it reminds me of my high school boyfriend and our relationship. It's a beautiful song and although he was not the love of my life, this song encapsulates the bittersweetness of that time in my life. Not to mention, the singer's (James Mercer) voice has such a melancholic and ethereal quality to it. It has the same effect on me as Art Garfunkel's voice.

Hymn to her - The Pretenders. Makes me think my half-sister (who died before I really got to know her) and of women loved and lost

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 15/02/2019 23:30

Bitzer Hymn to her, yes, that is a truly beautiful song.

Have you Forgotten by the Redhouse painters reminds me of my sister. And, if it is the right moment, I will cry when I hear it.

I thought I's include this song today, as it was (among others) played at my father's funeral. He was a sailor. He became my best friend and most loyal confidant as I became an adult. He was not without his flaws though, and we had a very complicated relationship.

This song was played during the video (that my sister made) where there were photos of him while he was in the navy. He died in 07' but it took me almost 10 years to hear this song again. It still makes me sad when I listen to it, but now, there's more sweetness than bitter.

Days - The Kinks/Kirsty McColl

It has always made me cry - never more so than the day I dropped DS off at university and it came on the radio whilst I was driving home to an empty house.

tararabumdeay · 18/02/2019 14:44

'Teach Your Children Well' - Crosby, Stills and Nash.

"Feed them on your dreams"
"Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh. And know they love you."

Such a hopeful song that gets me every time.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 18/02/2019 14:46

UbbesPonytail, I'm so sorry to hear about you losing your sister. I too, would be crushed if that were to happen with me as my sis and are so close. That is a really beautifully sad song too, so I can understand why. I remember I couldn't listen to the Shins for a decade after my Dad died, because my Shins CD was playing when we were on the way to the hospital only to find out he was DOA.

Was she your older sister or younger sister, if you don't mind?

For you, Flowers

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 18/02/2019 14:52

tararabumdeay I love this song too! This song was also included in my Dad's funeral when the video show photos of all of us (his children) were shown. It was really a beautiful memorial. It's hard for me to hear any of the songs that were played that day, and I think there were about 7.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 18/02/2019 15:13

I am loving all the music threads that are going. This ones making me blub a bit : (

ABBA Slipping through my fingers. I have a DD and sometimes cannot bear to listen to the words as they already feel true Sad Steala i hope things are better for you now?

Dorothy I remember watching Stardust and feeling DD kick madly for the first time so now cannot listen to that Take That one without turning into an ugly sobbing mess!

tararabumdeay · 18/02/2019 16:29

MissLanes what were the other songs? I bet they'll make us cry too.

My mate, too young, had 'Meet On the Ledge' and 'Where Does the Time Go' He was more Fairport than West Coast but knew all about both.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 18/02/2019 18:23

tararabumdeay, Sure! I can't remember all of them offhand, but I put a call to my sister to see if she can tell me. She was the one that made the video, although, I contributed all of the music., she spent more time putting it together. Not to mention, I think she watches the video a lot more than I do. I could watch it today, but I really don't want to go there emotionally right now. I was much closer to my father than she was and even she admits, that I have had a harder time with his death. I think I gave up all music and books for about 10 years because both music and reading reminded me of him. It was probably the single most devastating moment of my life, when he died.

I did listen to both Fairport Convention songs and they were pretty good. Definitely had that 60's vibe going on. Although, I am an American, most of my musical influence is from my Dad, and his likes were a lot of British rock in the 1960's, The Animals, The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, The Rolling Stones etc.

Anyhoo, I'll include the list as soon as my sister gets back to me. Smile
