If tomorrow never comes - Roman Keating. My dsis wanted it played at her funeral (she had a life limiting illness).

I was tasked with finding it as her copy was on her locked iPod. I tried the main stores - HMV, etc., without luck. I went into a small independent store and told them my sister wanted this song. Shop owner was v. rude about my sister’s taste in music. I could only agree - this was a woman who had most of her CDs left untouched when her car was broken into Grin. But I did wonder how guilty he’d have felt had he realised what my sister had wanted it for.

Strangely, on the way back from the funeral the song was played on the radio.

There are 3 songs that always make me feel a bit tearful. 'Everybody hurts' by REM,because I was going through a particularly bad patch in my marriage at the time it was being constantly played on the radio. 'Promise me' by Beverly Craven, because I had to have my beloved cat PTS around that time, and 'One day in your life' by Michael Jackson, because I was going through the pain of unrequited teenage love at the time.

Flogging Molly, "If I ever leave this world alive"

Mmmhmmokdear · 10/02/2019 16:56

The hymn How Great Thou Art as it was my dear departed nanna's favourite. I can't even think of it without welling up.

Plus bizarrely, "Chiquitita" (or however you spell it) by Abba. No rhyme or reason to it. I'm just in floods over it every time and I don't know why!!

Susannach · 10/02/2019 16:58

So Long, Marianne — Leonard Cohen

River — Joni Mitchell

No Surprises— Radiohead

cantfindname · 10/02/2019 17:07

I'll Stand By You the Chrissy Hynde version. I can't begin to tell you why or I will be sobbing.

iklboo · 10/02/2019 17:11

Dear Friends by Elbow

Especially the lines:

You stuck a pin in the map I was in
You are the stars I navigate home by

Take That - Rule the world. Everytime.

swizzells2003 · 10/02/2019 19:18

Take that, rule the world......played at my nieces funeral - she died 10 years ago today

Steala · 10/02/2019 19:36

Slipping through my fingers. I first heard it when I had crippling PND - the sort where you can't feel anything and you feel unconnected from it all. It reminds me of all the years I feel I've lost to depression.

DareDevil223 · 10/02/2019 19:44

Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits. My dad's favourite song. He died 25 years ago and never got to meet my DS and it just makes me weep. He was a wonderful man and I miss him so much.

Kooks by David Bowie. He wrote it for his son and I used to dance DS around and sing it to him when he was a baby.

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 10/02/2019 19:58

Both China and Tear in Your Hand by Tori Amos. It encapsulated the break up of my very first love. It was one of the most devastating experiences I have ever had.

Honourable mention, also by Tori Amos called Winter. This song reminds me of my lovely father who suddenly died in 07'. It took me almost a decade to properly deal with his death. I still miss him every day. He was my most trusted confidant and best friend. Sad

Let me go - by Gary Barlow

It sounds upbeat but the lyrics get me every time. He wrote it for his still born daughter. I've had multiple MC and cannot have children. It just touches me deeply. I love the song as I feel real connection to it.

FrenchyQ · 10/02/2019 20:04

Love is all around , the Wet Wet Wet version, this was played at my Aunts(and godmother) funeral, she had breast cancer and was taken very quickly from us 21 years ago this Wednesday.

YeOldeTrout · 10/02/2019 20:07

May not cry, but I tend to turn them off coz I'm overwhelmed.

No Son of Mine (Phil Collins, about an abusive dad he keeps trying with anyway)
Dustbowl Days (Natalie Merchant, about an impoverished family)
Little Green (Joni Mitchell, about the baby she gave up for adoption)

There is another one or dozen that make me cry but I'm blocking title(s) out. Too much!

BillyWilliamTheThird · 10/02/2019 20:10

Charlotte Sometimes by The Cure. Reduces me to absolute floods every single time.

shartsi · 10/02/2019 20:13

Goodbye is the saddest word by Celine Dion

hugoagogo · 10/02/2019 20:23

'Up the Junction' Squeeze not sure why I find it so touching, but it makes me sob.

Also 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' by Israel Kamakawiwoole because of Mark Greene

misskiki69 · 10/02/2019 20:36

Gravity - Sara Bareilles. Such a beautiful song but I cannot bear listening to it. I sent the lyrics to my ex when he ended our relationship. Then we got back together but it didn't work out. Those lyrics sum it up perfectly. As soon as I hear the first few piano notes, I feel the tears well. 😢

AlexaAmbidextra · 10/02/2019 20:41

Father’s and Daughters, Michael Bolton. My Dad died several months ago and, despite my age, this song makes me feel like the child who misses her Daddy.

Fightthebear · 10/02/2019 20:46

@DareDevil

Sorry you lost your Dad.

I also love that song, I discovered the Indigo Girls’ version of it which is a different take on it:-

Plaiceholder · 10/02/2019 20:48

Anything by Vampire Weekend. Fucking hell, they're awful.

whitetoblerone · 10/02/2019 20:58

Footprints in the sand. My son died hours after birth and the lyrics were permanently in my head.

I promise you, I'm always there when your heart is filled with sadness and despair.

We played it at his funeral. I gets me every time. Every. Single. Time.

Tiggs335 · 10/02/2019 21:48

The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack. Reminds me of when dd was born. Always makes me well up!
