I know mistakes happen, but surely to god cashiers in shops are used to seeing security tags on items!

Wow.
I can’t believe you complained.
I work in retail and yes, sometimes tags do get left on. Occasionally items end up being tagged twice in difference places so you take one off and you wouldn’t think to look for a second. Also we get told to tag items that are over a certain amount but occasionally someone has tagged an item that is less than that amount so you don’t look for a tag and you don’t always notice them.
We are human, we make mistakes.
When the alarm goes off we don’t automatically think thief, we think a tags been left on and we go to the customer to check and we apologise.
Chances are no one you knew saw the incident and even if they did, I’m sure it’s happened to them in the past and they would assume a tags been left on and not that you’ve stolen something!!

Thisnamechanger · 09/02/2019 13:05

People saw it happening, maybe someone I know?

Or the paparazzi 😂😂

Get over yourself OP.

HaventGotAllDay · 09/02/2019 13:06

Well, you're right to be embarrassed I suppose.
Just not for the reason you think.

WellErrr · 09/02/2019 13:06

I would be furious and would be escalating it very rapidly very quickly

FFS stop 😂😂😂

dustarr73 · 09/02/2019 13:07

You complained over a tag being left on.Dickhead

CaptainHammer · 09/02/2019 13:07

No it was just a mistake. I’m genuinely shocked you complained. Yea it is a bit embarrassing when everyone turns to look at who set of the alarms but no need to complain!
Poor cashier.

MrsMartinRohde · 09/02/2019 13:09

*I'd be glad the beeper HAD gone off and the security guard had made me check my bag, TBH.

The last time someone forgot to take the tag off, I left a busy shop and either the beeper did not go off or I didn't notice it (supermarket, two sets of double doors, lots of people going in and out).
It was a pain to have to find the receipt and go back on a different day, after discovering that the tag was still on.There was a good chance that I might have chucked the supermarket receipt before noticing that the tag was still there.*

this. exact situation happened to me. I wish the alarm had gone off because it was a complete pain to go back, and all for a packet of boys boxer shorts.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 09/02/2019 13:10

No it's a mistake. I've left a shop with the tag still on and got home them had to go back - that annoyed me.
I've also had an online delivery arrive with the tag still on - that annoyed me!

Livpool · 09/02/2019 13:10

I am shocked that you complained. It was a mistake 🤷🏼‍♀️

iklboo · 09/02/2019 13:10

Absolutely. The cashier should have been dragged out into the car park and publicly flogged. Perhaps filmed for your continued gratification.

QuitMoaning · 09/02/2019 13:12

I absolutely would have been embarrassed but I also would have assumed the cashier didn’t do it deliberately and made a mistake. If they knew those consequences then they presumable would have been mortified (I would have been) so why complain and ruin their day too. Might even blot their employement record.

Doesn’t change anything for you, so why do it?

Dothehappydance · 09/02/2019 13:14

I once bought a coat, walked about in it for a while but kept setting off alarms, I then noticed the tag under the collar.

That was a real pain as it was from a town quite a distance away.

DH and ds got stopped last night as the match attax cards set off the alarm. DH just showed the receipt. All fine.

Thisnamechanger · 09/02/2019 13:15

Absolutely. The cashier should have been dragged out into the car park and publicly flogged. Perhaps filmed for your continued gratification

Then they should lift OP up on a big throne with a sash saying "Most Vindicated Shopper Ever"

Tink1990 · 09/02/2019 13:16

Oh im so glad many many more people have said no, that they would not have complained. How petty to make a complaint! Why would you do that over a simple mistake? That poor cashier Sad

Bryjam · 09/02/2019 13:16

I don't get the embarrassment. Literally every person on this thread has had it happen to them. That means it's quite common and lots of people know it happens. The default is that we assume it's an error rather then a shoplifter.

SusanWalker · 09/02/2019 13:18

If I see an alarm go off, I just think a tag has been left on. But then most people stop and look for the security guard so they can sort things out.

I find things can be sorted very easily if you're polite and helpful. I once bought a packet of paracetamol and a bottle of water on the self service in Morrisons.

The security guard stopped me in the carpark and suggested my card payment hadn't gone through. We went back and there was a till with a bottle of water still on the screen, but not mine.

I pointed out the brand was different from the bottle I was drinking and showed them my paracetamol.

All sorted amicably. I could understand why they thought it was me as I was drinking the water as I left the store.

But I always say yes to a receipt now when I use the self service just in case.

I don't think there's any need to get cross. These things happen. Agree it's more annoying to get home and find the tag still on. Especially if like me you don't have a car and have to walk back.

Amber0685 · 09/02/2019 13:18

You certainly have embarrassed yourself now.

Bryjam · 09/02/2019 13:19

Thisnamechanger · 09/02/2019 13:19

May I ask - was that today? Also, what was the tagged item?

Shiiiit....were you the cashier??

WatcherintheRye · 09/02/2019 13:24

The thing is, as long as you know you've done nothing wrong, and don't leg it when the alarm goes off, it's not at all embarrassing, because:

a) You know what's likely to have happened.
b) The staff know what's likely to have happened, and
c) Other shoppers know what's likely to have happened, because it happens all the time, and has probably happened to them at some time in their shopping career!

My embarrassment threshold is notoriously low, and even I don't get embarrassed - slightly perplexed, even irritated maybe, but definitely not embarrassed. The onus is on the store to explain what has gone wrong.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 09/02/2019 13:25

OP is clearly some sort of superhuman who NEVER makes a mistake.

Why didn’t you stop when the alarm went off? It must have gone off or security wouldn’t have come after you ......

themoomoo · 09/02/2019 13:26

Why didn’t you stop when the alarm went off? It must have gone off or security wouldn’t have come after you
she'll be thinking it's not her job to voluntarily return to the till

SassitudeandSparkle · 09/02/2019 13:28

I always stop if I hear the alarm go off, even if it's not me!

OP, I get that you were embarassed but you were wrong to complain and would have looked a bit silly doing that - but presumably the store realised that at the time.

tazzle22 · 09/02/2019 13:28

Ye gods...I sincerely hope that you and any that agree with you never have a job where thousands of items a day pass through your hands and you are expected to notice a tag on the few per day that have one on. DVD or bottle you can't miss but other items it's hit and miss .

Ok so you were stopped in the car park... once you show a receipt no problem. Unless of course you regularly step outside a shop with items you have not paid for.... which for supermarket is a frequent daily occurrence.

So when you are at your paid work you better be perfect ...never miss anything, never have an off day, never make a mistake and then have someone make a complaint about you over something so minor.

If you are a doctor and not noticing a swab left in someone's abdomen causing sepsis then of course you deserve all you get.

I have yet to meet someone perfect....please make yourself known and we can all take notes so we can be perfect too

Crowdo · 09/02/2019 13:28

No, I wouldn't.
