If you have a solitaire engagement ring....

Does it hook and get caught on things?

I have been looking at rings and like the solitaire style, but i also worry that those I have seen, the prongs seem quite high and i think they may not be very practical for doing day to day things.

So, if you don't mind (pictures are also very welcomed Grin ) could you share you experiences and any advice.

Mine is flush set, more like this.
I look enviously at my friends claw set, it looks much bigger (I guess it might be!), but think I made the right choice for my lifestyle.
You can also get a setting where the diamond is proud of the ring, but there are no claws - it looks more lik e a tiny ring round the top. I've been looking for a picture, but struggling, as I dont know what it's called.....

HowlsMovingBungalow · 04/02/2019 14:58

That is called a rub over setting @WinterHeatWave.

I have a tension setting with strips of metal on either side

MrsTerryPratcett · 04/02/2019 15:03

Mine is good but it's platinum, which I swear catches less than gold, and I take it off to do anything remotely physical.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 04/02/2019 15:03

Yup, that's a rub oversetting!

SheRasBra · 04/02/2019 15:04

I have a claw setting and it does very occasionally get caught on things but the bigger risk is knocking it as you do things like putting washing into the machine. I have mine checked every couple of years to make sure the setting is still secure.

flowery · 04/02/2019 15:08

I've not ever caught mine on anything. I am always a bit puzzled when people say they are worried if they get one like this they will constantly be catching it on things. I have a fairly sedentary lifestyle, sit at a desk a lot etc, so maybe that helps, but I do normal household stuff and it's never been a problem.

MorningsEleven · 04/02/2019 15:12

I have a claw setting, it rarely catches.

Here’s mine from the top and the side so you can see

I have a very classic briiliant cut, 1/4 carat solitaire in a claw setting. It's 20 years old... have never caught it on anything. Smile

jellycatspyjamas · 04/02/2019 15:27

I’ve had mine for over 25 years, it’s never caught on anything and the stone is as secure as the day I got it.

sugarbum · 04/02/2019 15:41

Mine is a bit like flowerys. I've worn it constantly for 15 years (it won't actually come off now - I've gained too much weight) and I've never got it caught on anything. Ever.

macnab · 04/02/2019 15:56

Mine is a princess cut solitaire, have had it on my hand every day for the last 16 years and never caught it on anything and the stone is still perfect.

JamesBondFire · 04/02/2019 15:57

Totally understand where you are coming from. I foresaw the 'getting caught on everything' problem and mentioned this to my now husband when we were talking marriage. He designed the ring and the stone sits close to the band. Not flush by any stretch but enough to never get it caught on anything. It's great! I'd post a picture but it's way too outing!!

Introvertedmum · 04/02/2019 15:58

Mine is an elevated claw setting and I catch it and bash it regularly but I’m a complete klutz.
This thread has reminded me to get it checked.

remainymcremainface · 04/02/2019 16:00

Wow flowery my ring is identical to yours!

I also have never caught mine. Do need to get the setting checked regularly.

VanillaSugarr · 04/02/2019 16:01

macmab are you me!!Grin. Likewise and never caught it on anything. Thought I would, though...

FrequentFlyerRandomDent · 04/02/2019 16:02

No, never really and it is a standard setting I think.

Strokethefurrywall · 04/02/2019 16:09

I have and no, I don't think it ever gets caught on anything - it's a Lucida 4 prong setting so doesn't sit as high as a regular 6 prong.

As long as it's a well made ring and you get it checked regularly you shouldn't have any trouble.
In fact, I lost a diamond out of my wedding band, as the fully eternity bands seem to be more delicate.

Never. Having worked in a jewellers a decent ring shouldn’t catch....

Hazlenutpie · 04/02/2019 16:21

I have a diamond solitaire, with claw setting. It's never caught on anything.

FeedMeBooks · 04/02/2019 16:24

Mine looks like this so no claws. I wear it all the time. www.diamondsfactory.co.uk/design/full-bezel-setting-princess-diamond-plain-engagement-ring-hmsr46401

Sexnotgender · 04/02/2019 16:25

Not a solitaire but an emerald cut sapphire.

Prongs are rounded at the top and don’t catch on anything.
