If you have a solitaire engagement ring....

Does it hook and get caught on things?

I have been looking at rings and like the solitaire style, but i also worry that those I have seen, the prongs seem quite high and i think they may not be very practical for doing day to day things.

So, if you don't mind (pictures are also very welcomed Grin ) could you share you experiences and any advice.

They are a symbol of child slavery and war. Perhaps a classier option would be to look for conflict free gems. Or antique.

MrsTerryPratcett · 04/02/2019 16:29

DH made sure mine was conflict free. It's perfectly possible.

NorthernSpirit · 04/02/2019 16:34

I have a 2 carat Tiffany Setting - it’s never caught anything

Sex that ring makes me want to go out and propose to myself. An emerald cut sapphire 😍

sleepyhead · 04/02/2019 16:36

Mine recently started to snag and that's how I knew the claws needed checked and one replaced as it had got damaged. IME they don't snag if they're in good condition.

flamingofridays · 04/02/2019 16:39

this is mine, sits quite tall on my finger and I don't think ive ever caught anything on it!

(ps molehills mines moissanite so no cruelty here!!)

I have a claw setting and it very rarely gets caught up. Saying that though I lost the diamond from my ring once. I was devastated to look down and see an empty hole where the stone should have been. The claw was broken on that day though.

loobylou10 · 04/02/2019 16:47

Mines an aquamarine but it's a rub over style so very easy to wear.

I wear my grandmothers on my right hand, my own isn't a solitaire, and in the 13 or 14 years I've been wearing it, it's never caught on anything. It's about eighty years old, but I don't know the name of the setting. Pics attached.

sparklesq · 04/02/2019 16:53

I have a solitaire and its never caught on anything but weirdly my sister has an almost identical ring and hers is forever catching on clothes and she's always got bits of fluff stuck to it. Would annoy me if it was mine

bellinibobble · 04/02/2019 16:54

Mountainsoutofmolehills

Very easy to buy conflict free diamonds! Tiffany guarantee it, for example.

Gunpowder · 04/02/2019 16:56

I wish I didn’t have a pronged setting. Mine doesn’t catch but I worry about it scratching the babies so I rarely wear it. I just wear my wedding ring/eternity ring instead.

Lndnmummy · 04/02/2019 16:58

Mine is a solitaire 4 claw setting. It does catch sometimes more so recently and now I wonder if it is because it needs tightening. I’m going to take it off just in case.

Brightpinktulip · 04/02/2019 19:10

Gorgeous rings ladies. My ring isn't a solitaire but had a rub over setting which I love as it never snags. I also have a claw set five stone ring which is beautiful but I rarely wear it as the claws catch and snag.

CatnissEverdene · 04/02/2019 19:15

I had a claw set solitaire, and it caught all the time. I also lost the stone twice, which was really upsetting. It was a handmade one by a local jeweller, and cost a small fortune when DH bought it so I don't know why it was so problematic. DH got me a new ring for our 25th wedding anniversary, which I adore.

Dandelio · 04/02/2019 19:16

Mine's 19 years old and it's never snagged. I chose one that didn't stick up too much.

Sexnotgender · 04/02/2019 19:36

Thank you @blanchem my husband had it made using stones from my mums engagement ring. It was a beautiful Princess Di style sapphire with diamond halo which isn't really my style. Had it turned into something a bit more modern. I love it!

Holidayshopping · 04/02/2019 19:55

Mine doesn’t collect fluff or anything but does make pulls on some towels which is annoying!

TheRealHousewifeofCheshire · 04/02/2019 20:00

Mine doesnt catch ive occasionally scratched my children though Shock

Wouldnt have crossed my mind to have it checked

Honeyroar · 04/02/2019 20:05

Mine is claw set and also square, but has never caught (it did once or twice when very new, and I got into the habit of turning it inside my finger while putting on tights, which I still do). I never take it off despite having horses and a moderately physical job. I have managed to crack/snap the gold band though somehow!

silkpyjamasallday · 04/02/2019 20:05

I have a pear solitaire and it gets caught on everything, beautiful but not as practical as I had imagined. I'm toying with the idea of getting it melted down and the gold and the stone put into my wedding ring which I'm having made and just having the one ring as I don't really like stacking themZ

SpiritedLondon · 04/02/2019 20:08

This is mine.... no idea of the name of the setting but there isn’t actually anything to catch.

Now I’ve got adverts for diamonds all over the place

MisstoMrs · 04/02/2019 20:14

Claw set marquis cut. Never caught on anything. Don’t worry about it.

Galvantula · 04/02/2019 20:15

I've not worn mine much since the dc were born. I think i did scratch tiny baby DS and it freaked me out.

We have restrictions on how much jewellery we can wear at my workplace, so i can't wear it there and have got it of the habit.

I tried wearing it recently and i think i need to get it resized, it's really loose as I've lost a chunk of weight. I was a bit paranoid it'd fall off!
