If you could live anywhere in the UK, where would it be?

Having a chat about where we would like to live but we're obviously constrained with practicalities like work and children's school. So conversation led to Ok if I didn't have to worry about work and children's education where would I like to live and I didn't have a clue!
So where would you live within the UK if there were no constraints and why?

Stirling in Scotland, lovely small city with a rural feel and not too far from Glasgow/Edinburgh with good transport links too

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/02/2019 17:56

I live in the south east, wouldn’t recommend here. Expensive answer crowded.

I don’t know them well but two of my children are currently living in Sheffield and York. From what I’ve seen I could easily see myself in one of those, amazing places. So I’d say, Yorkshire..

Pembrokeshire. Simply stunning. But too far from family and I'd need a decent pension!

Right here, in this house, in this village.

Blackheath, London

by the sea.
Proper devon/cornish village, not too far from a big city, with cliff walks etc.

But It would have to come with free train pass to where all my family live!

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 03/02/2019 18:09

Skye. But for now, right here, in this house, on this lane, in the arse end of nowhere in particular.

Millie2013 · 03/02/2019 18:21

Somewhere on the coast, probably in the SW! I’m not fussy, as long as it’s near the coast :)

Mari50 · 03/02/2019 18:33

Somewhere on the coast. Beautiful coastline in Scotland but the weather is pretty shit esp the west coast so would need to head southwards and the problem with that is all the bloody people.

midsomermurderess · 03/02/2019 18:40

Dorset.

MyPatronusIsABadger · 03/02/2019 18:41

Edinburgh, no doubt about it

Nodnol · 03/02/2019 18:42

York, Chester, Norwich, Keighley, Cardiff, or Marylebone. Not that I’ve been hypothetically planning my move to the UK for a couple of years now.

elQuintoConyo · 03/02/2019 18:44

Scottish Highlands, near the sea: Inverness/Findhorn kinda area.

Wellcolourmehappy · 03/02/2019 18:44

I know what I want but I don't know where! Close to a sandy beach but not touristy. A villagey atmosphere which combines friendliness and people looking out for each other without the gossip and nosiness. Good shops for everyday use ie Post Office, convenience shop, butchers, bakers, cafe, pub etc with a good town a short car/bus ride away for supermarket, diy, cinema and more restaurants Beautiful views but close to motorway for ease of visiting places/friends/relatives. I did think Devon/Somerset but a friend there says it's a nightmare as no shows/musicals/concerts come down there so it always involves a long drive and an overnight stay to see anything/anyone which then doubles,if not triples, the initial cost of the tickets so they don't bother. Anything too far North is a no go as I hate the cold.

Back in the OH's home turf of the Southwest - Dartmoor/Devon/Cornwall.

It's home - something London has never been.

ChristinaMarlowe · 03/02/2019 18:57

You're describing villages around Torbay in South Devon - biased as I live in one! Lovely place. I'm sure there are many places around the South coast that are the same. The towns are a bit divey but that's the economy in a tourist place for you. The villages are beautiful.

MrsPworkingmummy · 03/02/2019 18:59

The Lake District, Edinburgh or anywhere in the Scottish Highlands

ChristinaMarlowe · 03/02/2019 18:59

Ah cross post with your comment about live music - very true sadly. Worth the travel to see someone you like though and you do crave a city atmosphere every few months so it can fit in with long weekends away in busier places.
