If you could live anywhere in the UK, where would it be?

Having a chat about where we would like to live but we're obviously constrained with practicalities like work and children's school. So conversation led to Ok if I didn't have to worry about work and children's education where would I like to live and I didn't have a clue!
So where would you live within the UK if there were no constraints and why?

"So many people saying Scotland and its become a bit of a fantasy place for me to think about moving to. How much colder is it than South England?"

Comparing West of Scotland with SW England, I would say that there is typically a 4-5deg difference all year round. I chucked most of my winter woolies when I moved south and had to buy summer clothes. There is also a near constant breeze or wind. And don't forget there is a lot more rain. But when the sun is shining there is truly nowhere more beautiful. Also, people are much more friendly in my experience.

I really miss it, and we're planning to move back up again within a few years.

Depends where I’m Scotland WineCheese. North Scotland summer was quite nice last year, think it even hit 20deg once. The year before that the highest recorded temp was 14deg (which is still regarded as a hot day). The thing I find most different from England is the wind. You don’t notice it here (because we’re used to it) but you really notice it when you go south because it’s absence is conspicuous!

Having lived on the Scottish East coast, I’d say it’s usually 8 to 10°C colder than the south of England. And if you do get a sunny summer day, the haar will roll in and the temperature will drop like a stone.

Just remember the Billy Connolly joke about mothers shoving their kids into the North Sea at one end ofAberdeen Beach whilst grown men in rubber survival suits are being fished out at the other end.

I would love to live in Edinburgh. Is my absolute favourite city in the UK.

yes, the East coast of Scotland is beautiful but often ruined by the cold haar rolling in when the rest of the uk is basking in sunshine.

I would like to live by the coast. Currently live as far from any coast as it's possible to but need easy transport to industry for DH employment and our families are here (elderly).

Am planning my retirement!!

It’s always going to be Lancaster for me, I’m hoping to move there one day, I did my degree there and still go back as often as I can. It’s a small city that’s got lots of little tousristy things on a lot of the time, lots of little surrounding villages, it’s close to the seaside and some beautiful seaside towns like Heysham, Silverdale and Arnside.
It’s a short drive from the Lake District and only an hour (ish) away from Manchester / Liverpool etc.
It’s got a central train station and a direct train to Manchester train station and from there you can get all over the country. It’s also got a train services go Scotland and the lakes.
