Anyone remember those soup bowls with recipes on them from the 70s/80s

As in these:

www.1stopretroshop.com/item-pages/mod-china-bowls/soup-mugs-recipe-print-set.htm

I saw a couple in a charity shop today and it reminded me how ubiquitous they were in the 70s and 80s. I seem to remember thinking they were great as a child!

A friend of mine said you could get a set with green shield or tiger tokens (esso) and there was also an equivalent flan dish range. I'm not sure what shop actually sold them.

Anyone else have these years ago (or still got some floating around in a cupboard?!)

We had them too. Did you not have to collect labels from tins of soup for them?

SillySallySingsSongs · 31/01/2019 15:50

Yes my parents still have some 🤦🏼‍♀️

Weren't they petrol stamp things?

Rosehip10 · 31/01/2019 15:51

@SillySallySingsSongs

Maybe - but there seemed to be loads of them about, surely not everyone had a dad who drove miles for work!

Oh we had those. They were a petrol promotion. You got a voucher for every £x you spent on fuel then traded them in when you had enough for what ever the current promotion was.

We had those and glasses cant remember what other treasures Tiger Tokens boughf you

Rosehip10 · 31/01/2019 15:57

I remember the tiger token catalogue was mad - a few tokens for a hi-ball tumbler up to 1000s for a hi-fi, games console or bike..

Redglitter · 31/01/2019 16:03

I remember my Dad kept his in a wee red wallet - supplied when you started collecting - which he kept in the glove box.

We had loads of those glasses Smile

MrsJayy · 31/01/2019 16:04

We have a set they were late Mils Dh digs 1 out when he is feeling nostalgic or ill his mum used to let him use 1 if he was off school ill for soup.the rest of the time they were "for show"Grin

Squarepeg29 · 31/01/2019 16:06

The petrol glasses are indestructible - mine are still used daily 30 years on.

MrsWombat · 31/01/2019 16:20

Yes, my late dad used to drink tea from them! He used two teabags as well. I had forgotten this. Thanks for the reminder, I will have to buy one if I see any in the charity shop. Smile

User5trillion · 31/01/2019 16:26

I still have wine glasses from the petrol station gifted to me from my parents. I remember collecting the stamps.

PavlovianLunge · 31/01/2019 16:28

Good grief, yes! And Eternal Bow. Oh, and black octagonal china - the mugs were totally impractical.

I love the 70s and 80s.

oldsewandsew · 31/01/2019 16:29

I’m sure I’ve seen them in a shop on Dartmoor! I might be wrong, but it’s definitely the quirky sort of thing they would sell.

maudmoo · 31/01/2019 16:30

We have 6, best receptacle for homemade soup😀

MrsMoastyToasty · 31/01/2019 16:35

We used to have them. I can also remember my DF collecting tokens from cigarette packs ( I think that it was Embassy cigarettes) that you could exchange for items from a catalogue.

BoswellsBollocks · 31/01/2019 16:39

We had loads of stuff in our house from the Esso collection! My dad was a mechanic and had a deal going with the local petrol station. Our tv and all our home wares were from there.

And I had a giant Silentnight hippo from there one Christmas. I loved that hippo.

foxyknoxy30 · 31/01/2019 16:42

Omg yes my friend had them 😃

Rosehip10 · 31/01/2019 16:45

@BoswellsBollocks was it one of the monster size ones that would actually be used in a silent night store to demonstrate a bed? did it have the pjs on and a duck clipped to side?

I think my mum has a couple of the flan ones.

Rosehip10 · 31/01/2019 16:50

@noblegiraffe interesting! A quick google brings up loads of soup bowl pictures but no flan ones - maybe it is rare!

ScreamingValenta · 31/01/2019 16:52

I've got a full set in my kitchen! We use them regularly!

noblegiraffe · 31/01/2019 17:00

Even rarer than thought, Rosehip, I just texted my mum asking for a photo, and she broke it last year!

legolimb · 31/01/2019 17:03

I have two of the soup bowls. They were my grandma's.

Very useful indeed for soup!

We are in the process of getting a sleek, modern kitchen but the soup bowls will stay.

Rosehip10 · 31/01/2019 17:03

@noblegiraffe Sad !

halfwitpicker · 31/01/2019 17:04

We had loads of these at home

Not sure why, really

Think my dad got them free somehow
