Anyone remember those soup bowls with recipes on them from the 70s/80s

As in these:

www.1stopretroshop.com/item-pages/mod-china-bowls/soup-mugs-recipe-print-set.htm

I saw a couple in a charity shop today and it reminded me how ubiquitous they were in the 70s and 80s. I seem to remember thinking they were great as a child!

A friend of mine said you could get a set with green shield or tiger tokens (esso) and there was also an equivalent flan dish range. I'm not sure what shop actually sold them.

Anyone else have these years ago (or still got some floating around in a cupboard?!)

@RightOnTheEdge The range grows!

I am waiting for the person who has the FULL set of soup bowls, flan dishes and casserole pots!

Think most of the glasses at home were acquired with tiger tokens in the 80s.

I remember the soup bowls, but don't think we ever had any.

PrivateParkin · 31/01/2019 18:47

@MrsJayy you made me laugh saying "only for show" Grin my gran used to say that about everything, including my grandad - "he's only for show" Grin

I love threads like this, not sure we actually had the bowls but I knew straight away what you meant! I love them.

Oh yes! I inherited some from my MIL. The flan dishes are a perfect size for three of us and the mixing bowls are great as well. O think these ones were Esso?

@drdiva hmmm the mixing bowl looks to chic for the range! No 70s style cross hatch pattern Grin

Often used! I'm 34 and got them from my dad

Oh do you think? I didn’t know I was that sophisticated! Grin

I have the soup bowls! My nan used to have a set, so when we were on holiday in Malta and saw them in a shop I had to buy a set.

BrieAndOatcakes · 31/01/2019 20:41

My parents and in-laws still have them!

Rosehip10 · 31/01/2019 20:42

@AndNoneForGretchenWieners was it the complete 7 bowl set?

I recognise the set in userschmoozers pic. I was bridesmaid for my cousin in 1984 and I bought her and her hubby a set for their wedding present!! (I was only 15)....I saved my pocket money up and they were out of the Argos catalogue! I thought they were really cute Grin!!

PeachRose · 31/01/2019 21:02

Had my weight watchers soup in mine last night Grin

I gave our set of the soup bowls, like the ones Noblegiraffe posted, to the Charity shop last week. I also threw out one of the Apple and Orange Pie flan dishes because it had got really badly crazy cracked.

My Mum and Dad still have complete sets of the different Esso glasses and lots of blue china that might have been from Green Shield Stamps or maybe be the Co-op.

BoogleMcGroogle · 31/01/2019 22:31

I remember them well! Ours' were kept in the same cupboard as the egg poacher, trifle bowl and an unopened fondue set. I've still, to this day, not eaten fondue on home soil.

In our house, it was a coup if the soup in your bowl matched the recipe on the front. We didn't have the mulligatawny and that was my dad's favourite, so he didn't play.

I wonder if anyone ever made the soup from the recipe?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 01/02/2019 01:41

rosehip there are 6 of them. The mulligatawny one is missing from the set Sad

StealthPolarBear · 01/02/2019 06:15

Yes! Thanks for the memory op

Mayrhofen · 01/02/2019 06:19

Read your title and absolutely knew which bowls you meant before I clicked on the link.

Mayrhofen · 01/02/2019 06:23

There’s loads on eBay! I think I am going to buy a couple for nostalgic reasons.😊

Mayrhofen · 01/02/2019 06:31

So I’ve just bought two onion and an oxtail from eBay. DD and I love onion soup and they are perfect. You could get the full set on there. One of the adverts says they were a Shell promotion, don’t know if that’s true or not.

TranquilityofSolitude · 01/02/2019 06:41

I think they were from Shell too. We had them when I was a teenager. My Dad worked for Shell - we would never have bought petrol from Esso!

MadauntofA · 01/02/2019 06:45

Yep we had them, and a flan dish and the entire eternal beau set!!

Rosehip10 · 01/02/2019 12:03

Looks like casserole dishes are the rarest then!

Yes - remember them - fabulous!

Miss the days when you could collect vouchers and send them off and get something for them. Homepride do vouchers, but it's collect 10 vouchers then send them off along with £12 for the privilege of buying a mug. Hmm
