Maui's not a nice guy is he?

I loved Moana, I was so pleased DD liked a film where it wasn't a love story, a male and female got shit done and there was nothing between them. But I realised the other day, Maui's a bit of a bastard isn't he? He tried to leave her in the cave to die so he could steal her boat, then when she survived he threw her in the sea thinking that would finish her off also.
I've always wanted to know why Olaf half melting in front of the fire and telling Ana some people were worth melting for wasn't an act of love? He declared it! (Although maybe the crux of that was that he didn't actually melt.)
Can anyone else enlighten me as to other things I've missed in Disney films?

If you Google you'll find a huge analysis of how Moana is a metaphor for gender based violence, starting with the stolen heart of ta'fiti (which creates the anger in T'fi which only Moana understands).

So yes, he's a bastard.

Luzina · 25/01/2019 23:26

I love Moana too. Don't worry about Maui, he's the redemption plot. Even though its not a romance it's still that good woman redeems flawed man storyline. Who cares though, the songs are fab and the grandmother is AMAZING

Maui's conscience is his tattoo that keeps telling him when he's acting like a dick. All is okay by the end because Maui sees the error of his ways and the tattoo mini Maui rejoices! Bravo!

BartonHollow · 25/01/2019 23:40

I love Moana

Genuinely adore it

I think the point of Moana and in fact also of Frozen is

The women succeeded regardless of the fact that all the men in their lives were dicks

Fillybuster · 25/01/2019 23:43

He’s a dick, but the “you’re welcome” song makes me (almost) forgive him for it. And his dickiness is what pushes Moana to take control....so probably not a bad thing to watch a film where the female lead succeeds despite the men Grin

Boobahs · 25/01/2019 23:47

I often think this about Elsa from Frozen... She created a huge snow monster to attack her own sister, who then forced her and Kristoff to jump off a cliff Hmm

Whatsnewpussyhat · 25/01/2019 23:48

He is a dick but his parents tried to drown him so he is messed up. Desperate to be loved etc etc.

You're welcome.

BartonHollow · 25/01/2019 23:49

Elsa is also a childhood abuse survivor though.

Her Dad basically locked her in her room for a decade and wouldn't let her see her sister

BartonHollow · 25/01/2019 23:50

Fun Fact :

Elsa and Anna's parents died en route to Rapunzel and Flynn's wedding.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 25/01/2019 23:54

It also annoys me that in Oaken's trading post, the only winter dress and boots in the shop just happen to fit her perfectly. And how does she pay for them? No pockets, no bag, no money. She can say she's the princess but no one outside the palace has seen her for 10+ years so she could be anyone.

Argh that felt good.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 26/01/2019 00:10

Oh, FFS! There's a point where these are fairy tales. Yes, I'm a feminist, and, yes, I'm sure I'll get flack for this. But not everything is a 'lesson' and not everything is politically correct. But, underneath all this, as much as we resist, the stories have an essence of truth to them. And that truth involves magic and also - wow! - clothes that fit magically.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 26/01/2019 00:22

Did someone forget to put 'lighthearted' on the thread.

BartonHollow · 26/01/2019 00:45

Not everything is a lesson

Maui would disagree

"What's the lesson, what is the takeaway? Don't mess with Maui when he's on the breakaway"

ecuse · 26/01/2019 00:49

Don't get me started on the domestic violence apologism in Frozen. How the fuck are we celebrating a film that puts lines in the mouth of it's heroine along the lines of 'yes, she lashed out and hurt me, but she can't control her strength when she's upset and it's my fault for making her angry.'

What. The. Everlasting. Fuck.

Smellbellina · 26/01/2019 00:49

Love Maui, love a redemption plot

1wokeuplikethis · 26/01/2019 00:51

Well yes maybe he is. But then again you are totally overlooking THE HAIR, THE BOD!

Smellbellina · 26/01/2019 00:51

Plus every shit thing he did was in pursuit of the love he’d never had, it happens

mytieisascarf · 26/01/2019 00:52

Yip Boobahs. I hate that all the wee girls want to be Elsa. She had a total strop, flounced to the mountains, sexified herself, attacked her sister and was quite useless. Anna on the other hand- brave, kind, resourceful, funny, loyal!

Smellbellina · 26/01/2019 00:52

And the eyebrows! He should have mentioned the eyebrows, they’re his best feature

Smellbellina · 26/01/2019 00:53

Poor Elsa she broke under the immense pressure! Feel for the girl I really do

HerRoyalNotness · 26/01/2019 00:53

*Fun Fact :

Elsa and Anna's parents died en route to Rapunzel and Flynn's wedding.*

To continue, may be made up, but my son tells me they were washed ashore some place and had a son before dying. That son, Tarzan Shock

SleepingStandingUp · 26/01/2019 00:53

Frozen is... The women succeeded regardless of the fact that all the men in their lives were dicks
You take that back! Kristoff is awesome. #i♥K

The female Troll that decided she was gonna keep young Krisoff, isn't that kidnapping? Didn't the Ice Men wonder what happened to him? Who ARE his parents??

Yeah Maui starts off a dick but he's got serious self esteem issues and he comes good in the end

UnicornSlaughters · 26/01/2019 00:53

It was never supposed to be an act of truth love towards Anna...it had to be Anna's own act of true love. Kristoff came back for her but that wasn't enough either. She saved herself by sacrificing herself for Elsa - her ultimate act of true love, which by default also thawed Elsa's frozen heart.

UnicornSlaughters · 26/01/2019 00:55

They had originally planned to make Elsa the villain...then decided she was just misunderstood and a victim herself. I reckon Snow Monster was left over from the villain storyboard.
