Maui's not a nice guy is he?

I loved Moana, I was so pleased DD liked a film where it wasn't a love story, a male and female got shit done and there was nothing between them. But I realised the other day, Maui's a bit of a bastard isn't he? He tried to leave her in the cave to die so he could steal her boat, then when she survived he threw her in the sea thinking that would finish her off also.
I've always wanted to know why Olaf half melting in front of the fire and telling Ana some people were worth melting for wasn't an act of love? He declared it! (Although maybe the crux of that was that he didn't actually melt.)
Can anyone else enlighten me as to other things I've missed in Disney films?

"He's a bit of a fixer upper"

Either - don't overlook a good man because he's a bit rough around the edges

Or - it's your job to try to turn him into a decent man

Hmm
SleepingStandingUp · 26/01/2019 01:06

We're only saying that love's a force that's powerful and strange
People make bad choices if they're mad, or scared, or stressed
Throw a little love their way (throw a little
love their way) and you'll bring out their best
True love brings out their best!
Everyone's a bit of a fixer-upper, that's what it's all about!
Father!
Sister!
Brother!
We need each other to raise us up and round us out
Everyone's a bit of a fixer-upper, but when push comes to shove
The only fixer-upper fixer that can fix up a fixer-upper is
True, true, true, true, true, true, love

Can we take a minute to talk about the David Bowie crab?

No, he's Shiny!

CarolDanvers · 26/01/2019 08:15

See I think Moana needed to wake up a bit when she met Maui. Dd and I listen to "You're welcome!" in the car almost every day on the school run and when he sings "now I'm going to need that boat" I always say to dd "as soon as I heard him sing that I'd be like Wait! What?! STOP THE MUSIC!" Grin.

But I am a very untrusting person.

Love this thread.

I was a drab little crab once.

See Māui’s personality didn’t surprise me as a New Zealander the Māori myths about him are stories I grew up with. Slowing the sun, making fire and fishing up the North Island of New Zealand.

Not so commonly taught how he died. Crushed in the virgina of a goddess in the search for immortality - en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Māui_(Māori_mythology)

Fantail · 26/01/2019 08:46

vagina obviously not virgina

fruityb · 26/01/2019 08:49

He just wanted to be loved - plus he was trapped for a thousand years doing something for humans so he’s likely a bit annoyed.

I love Maui - he redeems himself and it’s Moana who takes control. Plus the grandma is amazing and the songs are amazing and it’s my favourite thing ever. It makes me cry many times. She’s the one who wins.

Plus Maui doing the Haka is my favourite ten seconds of anything ever.

fruityb · 26/01/2019 08:50

“Are you trying to get me to talk about myself? Because I will gladly do so - in song form!”

Who ARE his parents??

Who ARE Kristof’s parents?! The kids were watching frozen last night and I had this exact conversation with my husband! Was he abandoned at the beginning of the film? Did the trolls raise him? I need to know!! (husband thought I was getting over invested in an animated children’s film).

EmpressJewel · 26/01/2019 09:44

I love the David Bowie crab too.

In the "olden days" orphaned children of a certain age would be apprenticed out to tradesmen/craftsmen for a specific period of time (usually enough years to take them up to adulthood). The tradesman got an extra pair of hands, the orphan got food, clothing, shelter, and learned a trade. They apprenticed out non-orphans too but my theory is that Kristoff was orphaned as a baby, once he was old enough he was apprenticed to the ice cutters, then when he got lost in the woods while following the royal family the trolls adopted him as one of their own.

I'd put money on at least part of the plot of Frozen 2 being his long lost "parents" (imposters) showing up when it's announced that he and Anna are getting married and he ditches the trolls then there'll be a life lesson where he learns that the trolls love him and family are the people you choose.

Mrsemcgregor · 26/01/2019 09:52

On the frozen/tangled/Tarzan thing....

The ship was the same ship in the little mermaid which washed up Eric, apparently.

EwItsAHooman · 26/01/2019 09:59

Tarzan can't be their brother, the timelines don't match up. There's a photograph in the just for treehouse of the parents and baby Tarzan which would had to be taken before they left on their voyage. Photographs haven't been invented yet in Frozen but if they had and the photograph had been taken then we'd have seen the baby scenes before their parents left or he would have at least been mentioned during the death/funeral scene as he would have been the heir to the throne so important to the people and there would have been three memorial stones instead of two.

I have overthought this way too much.

zippey · 26/01/2019 10:32

The film has an extra bit after the end credits featuring Tamatoa - the shiny crab, you can find it on YouTube.

I think it’s fine to show flaws in our characters, Moana has some too. I don’t like how she sounds upbeat and quirky, like another Anna or Rapumzel. It’s the same character!

The bit with the scary baby bears seemed a bit of a filler.

Morgan12 · 26/01/2019 10:38

Love Moana so much!

I really hate Frozen. It annoys me how popular it is. It's sloppy. All the songs seem to be about doors. It's just crap. Tangled is 10000000 times better and doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

CountessVonBoobs · 26/01/2019 10:46

Can we take a minute to talk about the David Bowie crab?

Jemaine Clement, one half of Flight of the Conchords! His every line in that role is a joy. DH and I have to stop ourselves from appending "...as a divehhhsion" onto sentences too frequently. He's also half Maori; every voice actor in Moana has Pacific Islander heritage.

Mrsemcgregor · 26/01/2019 10:49

Agreed Tangled is far better than Frozen. Must be true because Mother Knows Best......

SleepingStandingUp · 26/01/2019 11:18

then when he got lost in the woods while following the royal family the trolls adopted kidnapped him as one of their own*

Agree with the rest, I always assumed he was allowed to work along side them but not actually any pens child. He could have found his way out. Instead Momma stole him.

But presumably he must have continued to have some human involvement - he remained an ice man, needed human food.

I think Momma stole him but sent him out to work to earn money then each night he'd return to her and hand it over.

JasperRising · 26/01/2019 11:24

I would love to know whether the writers of these various films have notebooks/ideas in their heads with all the backstory in that fills all plot holes (but couldn't fit it into the script) or whether they just went "meh, never mind, it'll give people something to debate on the internet".

gingajewel · 26/01/2019 11:49

Everyone knows big hero six is the best Disney film ever! Closely followed by brave!

mytieisascarf · 26/01/2019 13:10

Love Brave - Merida is my favourite princess by far.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 26/01/2019 13:31

Toy Story 2 is the best Disney film ever..
