What should we name our house?

Literally don't know where to start!

Building a new house in a field in the countryside. Our plot is long and thin so all I can come up with is Long Meadow. There is nothing growing on the plot itself, Beech trees across the road. House will be fairly large so I don't think anything "Cottage". We will have a barn for horses too.

Hit me with your best ideas. All and any welcome Grin.

Beech meadow

Bouledeneige · 24/01/2019 23:11

Oh thanks Blank. That's lovely.

Bouledeneige · 24/01/2019 23:12

My house is definitely a slow waltz rather than an Argentine tango!

Wild thyme meadow

Sorrel meadow

I knew a house that was named after the pub across the road. Nameofpub View it was called. The regulars used to jest that the pub ought to be called Tam's Hoose View instead on account of Tam spent more time in the pub looking out at his hoose than he did looking at the pub from his front room.

Anyway. What's it looking at?

AlecOrAlonzo · 24/01/2019 23:38

Sheiling is a wee, rough dwelling that people stayed in when they had the cattle out on the moor in the summer. Very definitely not a field.

BikeRunSki · 24/01/2019 23:47

Any inspiration from Historical Maps??

dangerrabbit · 24/01/2019 23:49

High beeches

Longdistance · 24/01/2019 23:57

Our house is called the Willows. It did have a willow tree outside but it died Sad

Beech view house
Meadow view house
Fawlty towers (only kidding)

TheGirlWithGlassFeet · 25/01/2019 04:23

I saw a house called Mordor once and thought that was really cool.

Given that you're going to have horses, are building yourself (not necessarily literally) and a folly is:
1 a costly and foolish undertaking; unwise investment or expenditure.
2 Architecture. a whimsical or extravagant structure built to serve as a conversation piece, lend interest to a view, commemorate a person or event, etc.: found especially in England in the 18th century.

I am going to suggest Filly Folly

feesh · 25/01/2019 05:13

Can you get hold of an old OS map from the 19th century (maybe online?) and see what features were around then? It might inspire you for a name.

BikeRunSki · 25/01/2019 05:35

I posted a link to a historical maps website a few messages above @feesh. I use historical maps a lot for work, they can be fascinating.

VaColintheCauliSugar · 25/01/2019 06:32

How about “Dunnerrin”!

Silkie2 · 25/01/2019 07:03

If you type into google 'National Library of Scotland maps' it takes you to all their maps. The ones for my county start at 1583-1601.
Fascinating. They open and close with clicks like google maps so you can see all the very old ones clearly and in detail.

MinorProphet · 25/01/2019 07:21

That old maps link is brilliant. Our road used to be called something very Dickensian.

MuddyWellyNelly · 25/01/2019 07:49

Neigh End is funny Grin. Also quite taken by Filly's folly, though trying to ignore the implications re self build....

I've looked at the maps. There's not much changed really. There are more houses now but their names are the same. I might try making my search a little wider to get inspiration though. They are an amazing resource though.

Front of house will look down our plot (currently just grass), over the road and then to the beech trees. Back of house looks over fields and then the sky. There are beautiful views from all around the garden of distant hills, but planners wanted the house itself set down a bit.

Skylark House.

SnugglySnerd · 25/01/2019 08:32

I just had a go with that house name generator. Hilarious! It suggested "dull house" based on the weather or "The Rowans" based on the tree in next door's front garden. Bit grand for a small semi in Birmingham!

Pigletthedog · 25/01/2019 08:38

Haha the name generator suggested 'Cats Estate' for mine Grin

MerryMarigold · 25/01/2019 09:24

My dd once thought Cinnamon Grahams were called Snottoman Grams. I think it's a great name, for anything really. I duo think Long meadow is really boring and doesn't show much wit or character. Then again you don't want to sound too clever. It's a fine balance.

MuddyWellyNelly · 25/01/2019 12:01

@MerryMarigold exactly it's a tricky balance. Ok long meadow is off the table I think. DH likes the Lea idea but thinks Aspen sounds more like the ski resort than the tree.

I like something sky related as we won't have much light pollution so expect lovely skies day and night. Also the name of the local hamlet has a planet in it.
