What should we name our house?

Literally don't know where to start!

Building a new house in a field in the countryside. Our plot is long and thin so all I can come up with is Long Meadow. There is nothing growing on the plot itself, Beech trees across the road. House will be fairly large so I don't think anything "Cottage". We will have a barn for horses too.

Hit me with your best ideas. All and any welcome Grin.

We named our house after something we saw on our honeymoon.

It later became the name of a Disney character and now everyone assumes we named the house after the film Grin

Shieling is an interesting one....

Laska2Meryls · 24/01/2019 18:38

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/01/2019 18:39

Beechbrae
Beech Croft
The But’n’Ben
Naeview (that was the name of the house I lived in aged 5).

My actual practical advice would be to drive around the village and check out the other names.

Our village has The Thatch & Thatched Cottage, several versions of oak trees, chestnuts and cherry tree/cherry trees.

There are a couple of Casa's which I'm not personally keen on and some daft combinations of names "Margray" and "Dorwill" spring to mind.

Just heading out for a bit. Will log back on later as this is more fun than choosing what windows to use....

Is it a happy, family home?
If so, I once came across the word plaistowes, which apparently means a place to play in Anglo Saxon (or something very old), and thought it would be a great name for a house.

Villanellesproudmum · 24/01/2019 18:47

Developers sometimes look at the church link, if it’s in a parish they’ll look at previous names relating to the parish or look to local wildlife, flowers for example if there are lots of hares/rabbits they look might choose Leverett House, Warren House, Bluebell. You get the idea.

MissWilmottsGhost · 24/01/2019 18:52

You can't do Longmeadow because it's Monty Don's garden. People will always assume you named it after his, even if you didn't.

Fuck. This is even worse than baby names. What a nightmare Grin

Any landmarks or features nearby OP? Trees, hills, lakes, etc?

CornforthWhite · 24/01/2019 18:58

The Steadings
Steading means old farm

SewingBeesDontSting · 24/01/2019 19:02

We live rurally in a new house surrounded by fields and named ours after a mountain in Tibet because it holds a special significance for DH.
Is there a special place that holds meaning for either of you OP?

MinorProphet · 24/01/2019 19:05

If you have horses, The Paddock(s) is always a possibility?

MrsEricBana · 24/01/2019 19:16

MrsEricBana · 24/01/2019 19:16

BlankTimes · 24/01/2019 19:17

Here's a link to the National Library of Scotland they have many different ages and types of old maps of Scotland, find your location and see if there are any interesting names nearby.

I tried the house naming link and it came up with 'Dog Lodge'!

CormoranStrike · 24/01/2019 19:21

I’d get old ordnance survey maps - Victorian ones - to see if there are any historic names for the area.

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 24/01/2019 19:24

I've always wanted to live in a house with a name. I wanted to name this one, it only has a number but lots of other houses in the same road have names.

I asked my youngest what he thought. He suggested...

"Dawn of human end"

Clearly I'm not naming my house that...but I can't think of anything else now...

Starlight90 · 24/01/2019 19:26

My house is the same name as another 3 cottages in the village. We gave a great postie so he knows who is who. So do ensure that there is no other house the same name!

LutherLover · 24/01/2019 19:30

I like beech view

howtobehuman · 24/01/2019 19:31

Susan

CoffeeTableBook · 24/01/2019 19:33

The Brambles

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 24/01/2019 19:42

I was trying to say what Starlings said Smile but don't think I was very clear. Try to avoid duplicates/similarities.

I know someone who lives at Higgin's Piece. No idea of the history, but I've always liked the name.

tilder · 24/01/2019 19:46

All the houses where we are have names. Mainly a variation on the name of the area (think tilder cottage, tilder farm etc) and are therefore similar. We get a lot of misdirected post, even though there are only 5 houses.

Agree it's worth checking other houses named in your postcode.

I would love to name a house.
