What should we name our house?

Literally don't know where to start!

Building a new house in a field in the countryside. Our plot is long and thin so all I can come up with is Long Meadow. There is nothing growing on the plot itself, Beech trees across the road. House will be fairly large so I don't think anything "Cottage". We will have a barn for horses too.

Hit me with your best ideas. All and any welcome Grin.

It’s just an opinion but I really hate named houses. Too show-offy for my liking, a bit like personalised number plates. But obviously some people love both of these, so yes, just my opinion.

So with that being said, how about The Twattery?

LongtimeLurker29 · 24/01/2019 16:08

Long beech meadow
Beech meadow stables

Honeyroar · 24/01/2019 16:10

I agree that named houses are a bit twee if they're on a regular road of numbered houses, but a lot of rural houses genuinely don't have numbers, particularly old houses and houses out on their own.

Onatreebyariver · 24/01/2019 16:10

That’s a very weird opinion to have on named houses. I like in a 120 year old house. It has a name but no number. Every house on our road has a name but no number. Should we invent a number to keep you happy?

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 24/01/2019 16:12

If you're up for some planting, a house near us is called Cherry Trees. It has beautiful cherry tree in the front garden and I assume more at the back Smile

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2019 16:15

Oh I love thinking of names for our house (daydreaming). I live near Chiswick Mall where all the houses have names.

Belle Vue (if you have a nice view)
Long Meadow is lovely.

Is there a historical family associated with the house, i.e. Cavendish House, Lyndhurst House?
Lark House?
Beech Grove House?

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2019 16:18

There’s a Rebecca Cottage nearby. My daughter is Rebecca. Smile

Do you have a special person you could name it after?

What was the local industry like in years past?

MinorProphet · 24/01/2019 16:19

Longacre

MinorProphet · 24/01/2019 16:20

Greenview
Fairview

Laska2Meryls · 24/01/2019 16:20

Lea is another word for meadow
so

Long Lea
Beech Lea
Lea House

Farness is another word for distance
so

Farness Lea?

MuddyWellyNelly · 24/01/2019 16:21

Lol at The Twattery. What a lovely post, eh? If I was to give my house, in the middle of the countryside, a number, what would that be? Would I start at the last house in the nearest town, count how many houses are along the 8 mile stretch of road, and go with that?

Not aware of any particular family connections but again worth a look. I like that Long Meadow keeps coming up.

Beech House

Laska2Meryls · 24/01/2019 16:23

Our house has a name and no number . could be a bit outing if I posted it
but It is xx Paddock

MuddyWellyNelly · 24/01/2019 16:24

I do like the tree connection. We lost our cat a while back and her name was a tree that we are going to plant. So I thought we'd use that; but then we lost our other cat too (it was a crap year!) and his name wasn't so house friendly!

Ah Lea is interesting. Only thing about that is I'd have to keep spelling it whenever I phoned anyone.

Oh I missed the bit about it being in the middle of nowhere. In which case a number would be strange.

But I bet nobody else has a house called The Twattery so that’s still a contender if you want to stand out.

Laska2Meryls · 24/01/2019 16:26

Aspen Lea perhaps?

WellBHouse · 24/01/2019 16:27

Cam you link in a family name/somewhere you love to go on holiday? Knew a Mr & Mrs Swancott who named their house “Swan Cottage”. Totally awesome.

Laska2Meryls · 24/01/2019 16:27

I remember a house near where I grew up called Wits End!

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2019 16:29

I like Long Acre. One of the loveliest local houses is called this.

What’s the garden like (hard to say in the dead of winter but any idea what grows, predominantly?).

Robin House?
Strawberry House?

iklboo · 24/01/2019 16:30

I got 'Freezing End' and 'Cat's View'

iklboo · 24/01/2019 16:31

You could go with Vipers Nest in honour of us lot Grin

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2019 16:33

Grin icklboo

TheVanguardSix · 24/01/2019 16:34

Sorry for the extra C!

MuddyWellyNelly · 24/01/2019 16:34

I'm going to compile a shortlist and seek DH's opinion. I'll include The Twattery Grin

Currently absolutely no garden, it is literally a field. Brambles are growing in parts of it.

Wits End sounds about right, also Tuksomedoin as mentioned before! Building a house is a nightmare (going to be worth it though, right?)

Aspen Lea is nice! Also Long Acre.

Can't work out a way to make our name work - partly as I didn't change mine when we got married, and a Bennifer style doesn't really work.

With 1wokeup's attitude to house names, you should go with: 1, The Field.
A good solid name, nothing "show-offy" about that. I'm sure the postie will be able to work it out! 😬
(My house is named and has been for 90-odd years, as are all the houses in our teeny, tiny village. We're all show-offs.)
