What should we name our house?

Literally don't know where to start!

Building a new house in a field in the countryside. Our plot is long and thin so all I can come up with is Long Meadow. There is nothing growing on the plot itself, Beech trees across the road. House will be fairly large so I don't think anything "Cottage". We will have a barn for horses too.

Hit me with your best ideas. All and any welcome Grin.

Humdrum House. Not suggesting it is, but I really like it!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 25/01/2019 13:29

Craigievaar Brae
Cairn House
The Howe
Dunsinane (going with Macbeth here)
Birnam Beeches/Wood
Cawdor Craig
Craigton House

MinorProphet · 25/01/2019 13:32

Ariela · 25/01/2019 15:55

MerryMarigold · 25/01/2019 16:08

Shepherd's Delight?

EdtheBear · 25/01/2019 16:26

How about the place you honeymooned?
I know people who've used an acronym of their kids nam

CormoranStrike · 25/01/2019 17:43

I like the sound of the nearby planet and your anticipation of big skies.

Stella Maris
Stellar House
Pole Star
Aurora Borealis

MattMagnolia · 25/01/2019 19:12

Pemberley.
Sandringham
Chequers
Howard’s End

Bowerbird5 · 25/01/2019 19:36

Ooh MerryI used to show a horse called Shepherd’s Delight.😃

I wanted to change the name of our house when we bought it but it is considered unlucky and as our plumber’s bill jumped from an expected £750 to £3,500 (1987) due to finding all the pipes going out were broken and the ones entering were lead I didn’t need any more bad luck!
I wanted to call it Roman Tree Cottage. Romans’ are very popular tree in Scotland. I rather like Long Meadow. In our previous village we had some lovely house names... Lavender Cottage, Honeysuckle Cottage. The ones on the front had sea related names as they overlooked the bay. Have a look on the house sites.

ForalltheSaints · 25/01/2019 19:56

The number and name of the road.

tilder · 25/01/2019 20:31

ForalltheSaints it's quite common for rural roads to be nameless. The road we live on has no name. I do feel for delivery drivers.

Merename · 25/01/2019 20:58

Housey McHousface?

AnotherPidgey · 25/01/2019 21:15

Do local placenames tend to have a common era of historical origin (Roman, Viking etc). They tend to have themes for geographical features.

I'm in a Viking area, lots of -bys and kirks. Low lying areas near streams tend to have -eaton.

I love The Twattery, would work beautifully on my modern estate. Most of the house names that have been bestowed don't sit easily Grin

I'm off to slip down the rabbit warren of an old maps link now. Bliss Smile

Unescorted · 25/01/2019 21:20

Burrage - meaning long thin plot

FrankiesKnuckle · 25/01/2019 21:40

A kind of portmanteau of your names, like Tracey and Darryl from Birds of a Feather (dalentrace)

Somewhereovertheroad · 25/01/2019 23:12

You could also use wildlife in the name.

Foxes Hollow
Badgers den
Meadowview
Sparrow lodge

EwItsAHooman · 25/01/2019 23:17

The house name generator suggested I name my house Red End

EdtheBear · 26/01/2019 01:28

I've finally got round to reading the full thread.

You honeymooned in the Seychelles. Would the village name or the island that you stayed on work, say LaDeigue Cottage check out the spelling.

Bin85 · 26/01/2019 09:57

What grew in the meadow.
Where our house is there used to be poppy fields and I think Poppyfield is good . ( We don't have a name)

NewName54321 · 26/01/2019 10:27

Meadow Long

Fox Meadow

What wildlife comes into the plot?
Robin House
Owl's Hoot
Ladybird Meadow

(Pity it's not a cottage, as you'll miss out on Earwig Cottage.)

Hen2018 · 26/01/2019 11:14

Monty Don’s garden is Long Meadow.

Bluntness100 · 26/01/2019 11:28

Little meadows
Stars folly
Star field
Sunshine house
Gazers folly

Personally I like little meadows.
