What should we name our house?

Literally don't know where to start!

Building a new house in a field in the countryside. Our plot is long and thin so all I can come up with is Long Meadow. There is nothing growing on the plot itself, Beech trees across the road. House will be fairly large so I don't think anything "Cottage". We will have a barn for horses too.

Hit me with your best ideas. All and any welcome Grin.

I'd be tempted to call it The Beech Hut - might cause some spelling issues though

TeacupDrama · 24/01/2019 19:47

check every house name with the same postcode( or within 2 miles if remote) and nothing remotely similar as parcels etc will be delivered wrong you don't want your parcel delivered to beech view 1.5 miles away when you are beech house and you don't want to have to spell it out to everyone ( our house has a Gaelic name in an area where Gaelic was spoken about 200 years ago so I'm expert at spelling with NATO alphabet )
the other thing is to name after a place you had a nice holiday ( but in English) or something the name has to be approved by post office I think to stop there being 7 rose cottages etc

or ask the oldest person in district as often there was informal names for places not on the maps there was a small wood near where my Dad lived called Tommy Duckis ( because tommy used to keep ducks there unofficially)

A sheiling is actually a small summer bothy out on moorland when Highland and Island crofters or in most cases their teenage children would live temporarily when they took their cows there for summer grazing as too far away to bring cows home every night but one of them would walk back with the milk each day ( in Scotland Sheiling is used as a house name) it basically serves the same purpose as Heidi's grandfathers house up the mountain

queenofthemountains · 24/01/2019 19:47

My road is all names, my favourite apart from mine which I'm not telling you as its the only one in the country, was Stonechat. It got changed to something not half as nice recently.

I always wanted to live in a house with a name and no numbers, never realised its a nightmare for deliveries.

FevertreeLight · 24/01/2019 19:50

I have lived in 2 houses named after napoleonic and ww 1 battles

Maybe celebrate the age

Call It Brexit or Referendum or Europa

But I would just go for The New House as that is what everyone will call it and the original of many houses in the past- the white house, corner house, beech cottage etc

FevertreeLight · 24/01/2019 19:52

Unless you are an incomer

Then call it the Posh Twits from XX Home- again what everyone else will call it.

Oddcat · 24/01/2019 20:00

I’ve just done the name finder for my house and got -

Cotoneasterlands , Dustbin View and Nippy Bank

mclady · 24/01/2019 20:01

Housey McHouse Face.

Murinae · 24/01/2019 20:15

Our house name is welsh for by the stream (we are in Wales and have a stream running through the garden). Does mean we have to spell it all the time though. We didn’t name it the previous owners did.

onetwopyjamacrew · 24/01/2019 20:29

Our house is just called Edale and I love it

MuddyWellyNelly · 24/01/2019 20:30

Ha at Brexit!

Just back in, will have a proper read and look at the links.

I have always liked the idea of Snaffles, Kimblewick, Pelham House etc, maybe would fit with horses?

Sylvanianfamiliesnurseryset · 24/01/2019 20:35

Oddcat · 24/01/2019 20:39

We are planning to name our new house about an aspect of local (ish) history. The history is well-known but we have weaselled out a much less known fact. So, for example, imagine we were moving to Market Bosworth, instead of calling it something like Battle House or Richard's Rest the house might be called Loyaulte me lie (which was Richard III's motto). Sorry, I can't think of a better way to describe it. Obviously Loyaulte me lie would, in itself, be a shit name for a house.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 24/01/2019 20:42

My generated name is Squirrels House.

kalefire · 24/01/2019 20:47

Brambledown / Bramble Down

Oddcat · 24/01/2019 20:48

I would call my house Weasels Bottom or Pogles Wood but it’s a newish house so doesn’t really fit.

VoleClock · 24/01/2019 20:59

Balonz?

Bonnetdedeuce · 24/01/2019 21:12

Knock Grena (Gaelic, translates to Sunny Hill)

Bouledeneige · 24/01/2019 21:25

Love Balonz of course!

Long Meadow is okay but a bit boring.... and most of the nature names seem a bit cliched.

My house (a boring terraced Edwardian) has a number but it also has a name in the stained glass above the door - Valeta. It's rather nice and I have no knowledge of its origins - it's not spelt right for the capital of Malta.

Next door is called Haroldene which isn't nice at all. Random huh?

I'd try and find a local historic, estate or family name.

Or a less common plant name. I just searched wild flowers and came up with a few: meadowsweet, lovage, red campion, sorrel, yarrow, coltsfoot, musk mallow, fritillery, teasel, tansey, wild thyme, bardock, oxlip, harebell. I decided against Stinking Iris!

Beechview · 24/01/2019 21:33

My best generated name was gloomy lodge

XmasPostmanBos · 24/01/2019 21:33

Came on to see if anyone had said Housey McHouseface but I am quite liking The Twattery Grin

CandleConcerto · 24/01/2019 21:40

Steven.

XmasPostmanBos · 24/01/2019 21:45

I am planning to name my future cat Steven.

bonniebanks · 24/01/2019 21:45

Im a postie and there is currently a house being built on a rural route I do and on their mail it says "the house under construction 50m south from (name of house at top of hill)" it has me buckled every time. I'm hoping they keep it as that😂

A lot of house I find are north x, south x, lots of sunny something (which is hilarious in Scotland), very few are something house. What I would say is make sure you don't call it something similar to another house near you cause that can be a pain in the butt!
