What should we name our house?

Literally don't know where to start!

Building a new house in a field in the countryside. Our plot is long and thin so all I can come up with is Long Meadow. There is nothing growing on the plot itself, Beech trees across the road. House will be fairly large so I don't think anything "Cottage". We will have a barn for horses too.

Hit me with your best ideas. All and any welcome Grin.

Haha at Vipers Nest. Like a secret MN handshake, other MN'ers would wink when they came to visit.

Anything historical like an old mill or something local? Name of your road?
My aunt’s neighbour’s house is Old Firehouse- self explanatory.

MuddyWellyNelly · 24/01/2019 16:35

3cats - it will be the first house in that field, so it's very accurate Grin.

Beechwood

CinnamonToaster · 24/01/2019 16:38

can you look up names of houses in the same postcode? It would be useful to avoid anything too similar to others.

I like Longmeadow. It's timeless.

I came across a Llamedos once, in the middle of nowhere, in the rain. Terry would have been pleased.

soupandshake · 24/01/2019 16:39

When will it be finished? Spring Cottage? Summer Lodge?

Laska2Meryls · 24/01/2019 16:39

Mead is another name for a field (just thikingthrough the field names near me)

so Long Mead etc

Accountant222 · 24/01/2019 16:42

My house has no number only a name, I would hate to deliver around here, the post code covers quite a large area

Murinae · 24/01/2019 16:43

We live on a single track lane and all the houses have names instead of numbers. Which is a pain for pizza delivery guys or Tesco vans as you can’t just folllow names to end up at the right one!

Loopytiles · 24/01/2019 16:43

I once lives in Brambles Walk. Was indeed full of brambles.

Laska2Meryls · 24/01/2019 16:43

Aspen Mead. (not as good as Aspen lea imo)
and Beech Mead sounds a bit like a drink you would have at midsummer around some standing stones

(glad you like Aspen Lea, Muddy I really do also Smile)

Meadows
Bramble Grove
The Stables
Meadow Way

IckyPop · 24/01/2019 16:45

I once lived in a house called Hunter's Lodge which sounds more grand and old than it was, but I liked the name.

eurochick · 24/01/2019 16:49

Brambley Hedge?

CalmConfident · 24/01/2019 16:49

Retired teacher relatives of mine house is called Dunmarkin

DGRossetti · 24/01/2019 16:49

Serendipity

Parthenope · 24/01/2019 16:55

I'd second having a look at an Ordnance Survey map, and looking for names of local features like woods or rivers, if you can't find field names.

I'd be slightly wary of calling the house after something you plan to plant in your garden, in case it repeatedly dies off, leaving you with a Cherry Tree House with only a diseased-looking stump in the front garden.

Definitely no twee combining names like Malcangela House or Smithsville -- that's total Dunroamin territory.

MrsSchadenfreude · 24/01/2019 16:57

The house I grew up in was on an unmade road opposite farmlands. All the houses had names instead of numbers, except next door, which was number 7 (and wasn’t). One of the houses was called Bessie, which I always thought was quite sweet. You could call yours Edna. Grin

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/01/2019 16:59

Bramble House
Longbourne (isn't a bourne a field?)
Beechams

Anonanonanariston · 24/01/2019 17:01

Clive.

GreenHatHacker · 24/01/2019 17:10

A bourne is a winter flowing stream.

MuddyWellyNelly · 24/01/2019 17:11

I love the idea of an actual name! Maybe I should have posted on Baby Names. Perhaps it can have an official name, and the affectionate name we use.

Hmm good point about the garden. "Dead Cherrytree cottage" doesn't have quite the same ring.

PrivateParkin · 24/01/2019 17:12

Longbourne was the Bennets' house in Pride and Prejudice - sounds v stylish.

I like "Bessie" Smile - that's fab. I don't think naming houses is tacky or show-offy at all. Houses have had names since ye olden days.

I like the Lea related names the best I think OP, but I get you re having to spell it out all the time.

juneau · 24/01/2019 17:13

Dunroamin'

Or a mash up of your two names/your favourite holiday destinations?

It always amazes me how many weird names you see on the front of houses. There is one down the street from us called something like 'Willcanda'. What??

VenusStarr · 24/01/2019 17:13

I've just used the random generator - suggestion of trafficside 😂😂, think I'll just stick with the house number!
