Just been reading the thread about living in Australia and how racist they are now and obviously us and the States are always in the firing line.
So which countries do you consider non racist. Possibly Brazil?

None. Everyone looks down on someone else. Human nature innit?

BSJohnson · 23/01/2019 20:09

Nope.

NOTthepinkranger · 23/01/2019 20:11

Surely whole countries can’t be racist :s ignorant horrible people are

KatherinaMinola · 23/01/2019 20:12

Ah, countries. Intriguing thread title though Grin

Ivegotthree · 23/01/2019 20:13

Everyone is racist to a degree.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 23/01/2019 20:14

NOT ok sorry.
Which countries have a population and politics that would be considered less racist than others.

Stereotypes - all countries will have stereotypes that are offensive.

I read an autobiography (I forget who!) where the author visited China (not all that long ago) and is told that all Europeans are supposedly monkey-like with red hair, also one where the authors friend visits them in Russia and goes to see a doctor where she is quizzed about her heritage (she is black) because she was ‘to pretty to be black (this was in the 1980s)’.

Bumblebee39 · 23/01/2019 20:17

I thought this was going to be about counties, how disappointing

I mean I have found Hampshire a tad more racist than the West Midlands and am thoroughly disappointed to not have a place to discuss my other musings on the subject BlushGrin

azulmariposa · 23/01/2019 20:19

Wherever in the world you go you'll find racism. It might be just belief in stereotypes or full on racism.

BartonHollow · 23/01/2019 20:19

I was really hoping that this thread was going to be like

Derbyshire vs Staffordshire

WHICH IS MORE RACIST

All countries have elements of racism/xenophobia

Iaintdonenothing · 23/01/2019 20:24

Technically not a country but a continent Antartica... until the hoomans get off the cruise.

caughtinanet · 23/01/2019 20:25

I was also going to suggest a multi cultural county like the West Midlands although i don't know if that's technically a county

lovely36 · 23/01/2019 20:26

Mexico. Lovely friendly people. Very humble.

ConferencePear · 23/01/2019 20:28

I would have thought Myanmar was high on the list of racist countries.

Racecardriver · 23/01/2019 20:28

Australia is actually one of the least racist countries I’ve ever been to. Far less racist than Britain. Australians are not very tolerant of immigrants who do not adopt Australian values and the racist minority are more vocal (freedom of speech is more of a thing in Australia) so it does look very racist. But in practice there isn’t really much discrimination going on there, certainly none of the institutional segregation that goes on in Britain. Religiously segregated schooling anyone? Public policy that encourages multiculturalism? Police forces that routine ignore complaints of dv or sexual abuse perpetrated by Asian men? You don’t get that in Australia. They are really anal about immigration control though (but that’s not about race) but of course that’s an issue to do with the government rather than the general population. Also ongoing issues with the indigenous population (the government committed atrocities as late as the 60s). The government has tired to resolve the issues by throwing money at the problem but it hasn’t really worked. In that sense the general population/system is a bit racist. But in general there are few genuine fucks given about race. So long as you are a good enough citizen nobody really cares.

Bumblebee39 · 23/01/2019 20:28

@BartonHollow

Well Derbyshire obvs Hmmyou could have started with a tricky one

Racecardriver · 23/01/2019 20:30

Also slightly disappointed that it’s not about counties. That would be far more interesting a discussion.

Bumblebee39 · 23/01/2019 20:30

@Racecardriver

They don't have religious schools in Australia? Are you sure?

Also, pretty sure the actual native Australians aren't treated all that well over there Hmm

Jsmith99 · 23/01/2019 20:31

Britain is actually one of the less overtly racist societies, thanks to strong anti-racism laws, multicultural schools and an overwhelmingly PC mainstream culture, led by public sector organisations and the BBC. We are far from perfect, of course, and many of the older generation cling to outdated stereotypes, but we have made good progress in recent decades.

Other countries are much, much worse. Most of Eastern Europe is hideously racist. Wealthy Middle Eastern countries treat south Asian migrant labourers like slaves. Much of the US is still hideously segregated : try finding a white security guard in DC or white hotel staff in Texas. Japan is one of the most insular societies in the world. If you’re not Japanese, you’re ‘Gaijin’.

Bumblebee39 · 23/01/2019 20:32

Brazil is pretty racist too
To be fair, seems to me that where there are people there will be Racism

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 23/01/2019 20:33

Mmm. Perhaps I should have left it at counties!
I think Sussex isn’t particularly racist ( xenophobic perhaps in areas). But possibly because people are mostly polite and there isn’t much in the way of ethnic diversity.

Bumblebee39 · 23/01/2019 20:34

@Racecardriver I'd love to have that thread but worried it would be a TAAT and get taken down

Racecardriver · 23/01/2019 20:35

@bumblebee native is not very pc. We call them indigenous. They have been treated very very appalling in the past. As late as the sixties (stolen generation). Horrific. Today the problems come mostly from within the population though (due to obvious mental health problems that result from being abducted as a child/having parents with mental health problems). There are also some old Australians from the white Australia days who are properlyracist but they’re all getting very old. The government has tried to work with indefinite communities by providing special programs, extra funding, extra welfare etc but it’s really not helped.

Re religious schools the state doesn’t fund religious schools. There are private ones but they don’t religiously discriminate like British ones.

Bumblebee39 · 23/01/2019 20:38

@SheWoreBlueVelvet

I disagree
There are some parts of Sussex that are thoroughly letting the county down Shock

Racecardriver · 23/01/2019 20:38

*white Australia refers to long abandoned immigration policy when the government wanted to make Australia a white country. Went hand in hand with attempts to integrate mixed race indiginous/white children by abducting them and ‘breeding the black out’. It definitely has an extremely racist history. Recent history might I add. But nowadays it’s racially verydiverse yet well integrated.
