Airbnb host being petty?

We stayed in a Airbnb on Saturday a lovely little cottage. I made sure I cleaned the whole place before I left even though I paid £21 cleaning fee.

Their was a tiny bin in the kitchen which wouldn't fit everything in so we left our McDonald's bag on top of it and put dd's nappy inside the bin in a nappy bag.

She just send me a message asking why I didn't take the nappies with me the whole cottage stinks and why did I leave rubbish on top of the bin. And she found a chocolate stain on the side of the table.

Chocolate stain whatever I must of missed it but honestly who on earth takes nappies home with them?!

Was there a reason you could not find a bin on your way home to dump it in? Nappies start to smell almost immediately, so no, I don't think your host was being petty. I think you were being an unthinking guest.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/01/2019 11:08

OldBean and is she'd been there for several days should she stack them in the fridge until leaving day then take them back with her Inn the train?

lottiegarbanzo · 23/01/2019 11:08

You're quoting selectively, so misleadingly. You missed (But back to the 'where are the bins' question).

If the host thought there were outside bins (at the end of the drive maybe) and failed to recognise that she hadn't communicated this, she wouldn't have expected smelly rubbish to be left in the house.

It's a wheely bin mystery!

TheLostTargaryen · 23/01/2019 11:31

I'm one in charge of a venue where it is only cleaned/attended by staff once a week and the hirers of the building are expected to clean after themselves. This doesn't include bins (unless it's obviously something that cannot wait a week like foodstuffs. It's normally office papers or crafting scraps).
We did have an issue with nappies being left inside the building despite signs asking them to be placed in the outside bin which was by the door! Some didn't even use the nappy bags we provided, they just dumped crap filled nappies rolled up in any bin they saw. The smell was so bad that after just two days that the whole building needed airing for hours and the entire place needed scrubbing. The smell was so bad even the almighty Zoflora couldn't get rid of it. We actually had to throw the bin away because the odour was ingrained. So yes, I get that nappies can stink.

BUT, AirBnb owner was unreasonable. If you don't provide somewhere for rubbish then that's your fault.

Oh and to all those who would take the rubbish away and put it in a street bin? Did you know that it is illegal to place household rubbish into public street bins?
There have been many cases of people receiving fines for putting rubbish in council bins as silly as that sounds. One poor chap was handed junk mail from the postie on his way out, looked at it on his way to work and chucked it in a bin. They fined him using his details on the mail. Just recently a woman was fined £200 for using a street bin when cleaning out her car by the bin.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 23/01/2019 11:36

One of my first jobs was cleaning holiday homes and hotel rooms. As staff, we emptied the bins of the rubbish, that included bathroom bins with condoms, pads and tampons. We all had gloves and tied the bin bags before handling. That's the job of a cleaner. As it is her property and you paid a cleaning fee, then it is her job not yours.

If the rubbish was in the bin and that was full then that's her problem. There's no outside bin for you to empty it in so what did she expect you to do with it.

It's a problem with a few Air BnB owners. They basically don;t like so the donkey work of hospitality.

Ribbonsonabox · 23/01/2019 11:37

Yanbu I use Airbnb loads and I have two under 4. Never had someone complain about bagged nappies being placed in the bin. If it was a smelly no2 I'd probably try and take it to the outside bin or another public bin, but I did leave one in a nappy bag in the bin bag in a place we were staying because we were just leaving. She didnt have a problem with that at all as she was just about to clean the room anyway.
I've never had anything but glowing reviews on Airbnb so I think you've just been very unlucky and got a random extremely uptight host.

Lycanthropology · 23/01/2019 11:42

I use air b nb and holiday cottages often and have for years, including when I had pooey babies. I have never had to take my rubbish home, there has always been provision/ recycling instructions/ outside general rubbish bin. It’s a basic!

SnuggyBuggy · 23/01/2019 11:46

This kind of reminds me of those bathroom threads where people get outraged at anything that does smell of roses being left in the bathroom bin and expect people to carry bloody tampons in their handbags.

It's a bin, the contents of bins aren't usually pretty or nice smelling

Notonthestairs · 23/01/2019 11:47

She should have provided an outside bin or given instructions where to leave a bin bag outside - it's that simple. If you are a host then it's your job to cover this stuff - if you can't be bothered then you will get smelly issues (be it left over fish and chips/pizza/chicken carcass or nappies).

If there is a smell you open a window.

Non issue.

VimFuego101 · 23/01/2019 12:10

I would have taken dirty nappies and food containers home with me, but tbh it's pretty silly not to provide an outside bin.

Kittykat93 · 23/01/2019 12:21

I'm just outstanded that people actually say they would travel home with all the dirty nappies ShockGrin

It was double bagged - even when my son had horrendous smelling diarrhoea double bagging the nappies masked it. The whole cottage would not have been stinking of shit from one double bagged nappy.

Glad you've suggested she provides an outside bin op - most places certainly would for this reason.

Stinkytoe · 23/01/2019 12:26

I can’t imagine owning a holiday let and expecting paying customers to take their rubbish home with them.
If I wanted to ensure it wasn’t left in the property then I would make sure there was an outside bin and instructions to use it.

TatianaLarina · 23/01/2019 12:26

outstanded

🤔

blacktree · 23/01/2019 12:36

I would have left rubbish in there if there was no outside bin.

CalamityJane10 · 23/01/2019 12:46

I would have done the same as you OP, if there was no outside bin.

If you left the nappies double bagged and inside a bin with a further bin liner, it’s not like the cleaner actually had to handle the dirty nappy. Far less grim than cleaning a loo!

Winterfellwonderland · 23/01/2019 12:47

Ugh

Kittykat93 · 23/01/2019 12:50

@TatianaLarina

Oh my apologies...astounded Wink

WWYDhelpplease · 23/01/2019 12:50

So you wouldn’t take it home but you expected them to get rid of the nappy for you. You are out of order.

TatianaLarina · 23/01/2019 12:53

I’m just teasing, it should be a word, I’m going to use it. 👍🏼

SleepingStandingUp · 23/01/2019 12:56

I would have taken dirty nappies and food containers home with me, but tbh it's pretty silly not to provide an outside bin
Where are you storing this dozen of pooey nappies for a week??

SleepingStandingUp · 23/01/2019 12:59

So you wouldn’t take it home but you expected them to get rid of the nappy for you. You are out of order
How is rubbish double bagged in a bin bag so literally Owner picks up bin bag containing rubbish comparable with stockpiling nappies to take on a 4 hour train journey?

I can just imagine the post.
Aibu to think its disgusting that the famy on the train have a bag of dirty nappies smelling out the carriage. I told her they stink but she said it's because some of them are a week old but shes been on holiday and she's taking them home with her.

SarahET · 23/01/2019 13:00

Oh well, something tells me she's not cut out for hosting if she can't deal with rubbish left in a bin. Guaranteed she will experience far worse that that!

payperview · 23/01/2019 13:01

You've paid for a service that they have not provided. It is their responsibility to clean up. Are you expected to take used tampons and condoms home too? It's rubbish, it's all dirty. Hosts can't pick and choose what they're willing to empty out of a bin. If it's in the bin, they are responsible for clearing it. So YADNBU.

CottonSock · 23/01/2019 13:01

I would have done the same

SleepingStandingUp · 23/01/2019 13:05

Are you expected to take used tampons and condoms home too?
Yup, wrapped up in the suitcase - 12 poo nappies, 5 used condoms, a weeks worth of sanpro, a chicken carcass and the wrappers from the take out. Isn't that how EVERYONE travels? You can pack them all nicely whilst DP runs the sheets you had sex on through the washing machine.
