www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2019/jan/20/spanish-rescuers-start-drilling-to-reach-boy-trapped-in-well-for-six-days

This is awful, I can’t believe it hasn’t been more mainstream news? I fear the worst after so long but I hope they reach him.. IOS anyone else following this?

The well had had a cover over it which someone had removed. They know he's down there because they found some of his hairs.

It actually happened 9 days ago (Friday before last?) - I read a report on an English language Spanish website (I'll try to find a link).

It didn't sound at all fishy but I can't believe he's alive - they know some rubble was dislodged as he fell & landed on top of him Sad

ILoveChristmasLights · 20/01/2019 23:06

Does anyone know why it has it taken so long to start the drilling?

GiantKitten · 20/01/2019 23:06

The hair was found 4 days ago. They've been reporting every day but I can't find all the reports

GiantKitten · 20/01/2019 23:07

Original report (it was Sunday, not Friday, sorry, I misremembered)

GiantKitten · 20/01/2019 23:11

About the drilling - this is the latest report

www.thelocal.es/20190120/spanish-diggers-struggle-to-reach-toddler-who-fell-in-well

After abandoning an initial plan to reach the boy with an angled tunnel because of repeated collapses and landslides, workers turned to the possibility of drilling a vertical shaft parallel to the well.
But the new effort slowed as diggers hit hard granite.

purpleme12 · 20/01/2019 23:14

Absolutely awful. Heartbreaking that that lid had been removed.

Whenever I read things like this it always leaves me worrying

YourWinter · 20/01/2019 23:24

It will be surprising if this ends well. How heartbreaking. I hope they locate him soon.

From various media reports it seems the borehole is on land owned by a cousin of the family.

BluePheasant · 20/01/2019 23:25

Things like this play on your mind don't they Sad that poor little boy.

GiantKitten · 21/01/2019 20:39

latest update from thelocal

'There have been cases similar to Julen's in which a person survived 10 days in a semi-conscious state that needed less oxygen, the head of the Andalusian Federation of Speleology, Jose Antonio Berrocal, told reporters in Totalan last week.
'Pediatrician Jorge Muñoz, told Spain's ABC newspaper that hopes were dimming. "Oxygen is important," he confirmed. "But if he doesn't have water or food, he can't survive more than a week to ten days," he said.'

Sad

purpleme12 · 21/01/2019 20:49

God this just doesn't bear thinking about

spiderlight · 21/01/2019 20:53

Oh poor soul :( I can't see this having a good outcome and my heart goes out to his parents.

MammyShark · 21/01/2019 20:55

According to www.abc.es rescue miners are expected to enter the new shaft at 4am our time. They will then begin digging 4 metres horizontally towards where they think Julen is.

RedForShort · 21/01/2019 21:06

It didn't take six days to start drilling BluePheasant, despite how it sounds. Tunnelling is more complex than it might sound. Due to many factors, as mentioned above collapses and landslides are all complication that ideally (given time) engineers can figures out how to avoid.

It was on the news last week (two days after he had fallen in). The report said they didn't know where he was exactly - something that needed to be known before they could start tunnelling.

Such an awful situation. There does seem little hope now. Desperately heartbreaking for the parents, and awful for those attempting the rescue the fear they'll have calculated incorrectly and that the rescue might cause his death.

Stickmanslittleleaf · 21/01/2019 21:55

This is so so sad, that poor family. It does seem there's little hope, he fell very far and he's been down there so long. I think even if he'd survived the fall the big difference between his fall and the Chilean Miners or the Football cave lads is that they were all older, aware and hadn't likely sustained very bad injuries to begin with. There is a ray of hope though, poor poor baby Sad

Lozz22 · 21/01/2019 23:38

@Beerflavourednipples wasn't the rescue of Jessica McClurre was it on the true movies channel?

ByeGermsByeWorries · 22/01/2019 14:25

I've been trying to find more on this, finished digging down now, seems they will start going across soon. I hope by some amazing miracle they find him alive. Poor poor baby.

BluePheasant · 22/01/2019 14:39

It's such an awful thing to happen. The chance he is still alive now is so slim but it's a credit to them that they are trying anyway. It's been on my mind so much. If he has died then I pray it happened not long after he fell as that would be some mercy now Sad

Piccolino2 · 22/01/2019 14:48

I have been trying to follow this but haven't been able to find many updates. It is so horrific words cannot describe. Poor poor baby and poor poor parents. I hope there is news very soon

GiantKitten · 22/01/2019 16:39

They're having to reverse some things they've already done

Will get link in a sec, hang on

GiantKitten · 22/01/2019 16:41

This was earlier today before they realised they'd have to backtrack

So frustrating

ByeGermsByeWorries · 22/01/2019 16:47

They've now discovered the tunnel they have dug isn't wide enoughSad https://elpais.com/elpais/2019/01/22/inenglish/1548144373303448.html?idd_externorsoc=FBBCMEN

CosmicComet · 22/01/2019 18:13

It’s heartbreaking. They don’t even know if he’s alive.

GiantKitten · 22/01/2019 18:57

It seems highly unlikely, given the circumstances & the time that's passed Sad

But there are freak survivals, esp of small children, after eg earthquakes so they'll keep going until they find him.

I'm hoping that the publicity this has given to the danger of drilling unauthorised wells might just stop people doing it in future. That would be a memorial tribute to him.

wrenika · 22/01/2019 19:24

It seems like a huge waste of resources given how long it's been. It's not really a rescue, it's a recovery operation. Definitely a lesson to be learned in it though...secure your boreholes and keep an eye on your child. Even if he survived the fall, and any debris that could have hit him, there's also the question of being in an enclosed space where gases could have settled...there may not be breathable air, there could be water. It's not a simple exercise.
