I’ve had a few broken bones and things but worst one is cauda equina syndrome, didn’t think it was so bad at first but things quickly developed and it was a horrendous time. I’m left with permanent damage/disabled, I spent almost 3 months in hospital.

Probably outing, but was in a car crash when pg with dd2 which led to giving birth prematurely, and a slipped disc which I think eventually led to the Ces.

Good thread, I am quite nosy and like reading about peoples injuries, weirdly enough!

Oddcat · 20/01/2019 16:28

I had my scapula smashed to pieces, all my ribs broken and punctured a lung when a coach overturned and I was trapped under it.

Ollivander84 · 20/01/2019 16:31

@Jammiebammie cauda equina here too, herniated L5/S1
The surgeon said ouch Grin at the MRI, I had a 5hr op

I’ve been really lucky actually never broke a bone until recently where I managed to break 3 toes on a night out

DustyMcDustbuster · 20/01/2019 16:36

While pregnant - shattered nose (reconstructed); fracture dislocation to ankle & fractured vertebra.

annieonamapleleaf · 20/01/2019 16:36

The standard broken bones, sprains etc. The worst was when I was 13 and went skiing. I somehow managed to fall off of the chair lift, fell 20 feet and landed on/in a fence. Ended up with a severely dislocated knee cap, months of rehab and a permanently achy knee now that I'm older.

Also, my appendix ruptured and, rather than leaving work and going to the hospital like a normal person, I remained at work all day and then went home, had a bath and crawled into bed. I thought it was just yet another ovarian cyst. The next day I had a raging fever, was weak and could barely stand. DH called for an ambulance and I spent 3 days in the hospital pumped full of high dose antibiotics.

Racecardriver · 20/01/2019 16:38

Fractured finger. I lead an exciting life.

Hedgehogblues · 20/01/2019 16:38

Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

PickAChew · 20/01/2019 16:40

Torn ligament in my ankle. My foot was bruised and swollen and I could barely walk on it. I did it by standing on an upward incline. It just went ping. I still cast an angry glance at that bit of pavement on the way past as it's never been the same, since.

Broke my elbow - which doesn't sound too bad but it has left me permanently unable to straighten my arm or bear weight on that arm (doing yoga and carrying shopping is difficult!). It has changed my posture and led to hip and back problems. It hurts every single day! Would love to know if anyone has managed to recover from a traumatic elbow injury and how! (I smashed it to bits to be fair and it had to be completely reconstructed).

CandyMelts · 20/01/2019 16:41

Traumatic brain injury from a skiing accident, horrific... Probably wouldn't be here if I hadn't worn a helmet

Pringlemunchers · 20/01/2019 16:41

Can I join the cauda equina gang too ? It seems surprisingly common !

Jammiebammie · 20/01/2019 16:43

ollivander Ooh cool, i don’t have a pic of mine! I’ll have to see if I can screenshot one when I’m next at neuro. Sorry you have it too, did you manage to get decompression surgery in time? I was left far too long which is why I’m still in such a state just now!

Longdistance · 20/01/2019 16:44

Broke my right tib and fib close to my ankle. Had to wait 2 weeks for surgery. Now have two metal plates and 19 screws in my right leg. Fell down the twisty stairs and bashed my leg into the wall on my way down. I was sober 😳

MsAwesomeDragon · 20/01/2019 16:46

I've never had a serious injury/illness, although I was very, very accident prone as a child and was on first name terms with all the staff at casualty for about 3 years. It's amazing I never actually had anything more than allergies (not life threatening, more swollen leg type), and mild concussion.

SD1978 · 20/01/2019 16:47

7 ribs fracture and then anaphylaxis later that night with a respiratory arrest at age 10. That hurt a tad. Will never forget the pain of hiccups whilst they were healing!

waterlego · 20/01/2019 16:48

I’ve never had an injury or illness of a serious nature. Just cuts and bruises, no broken bones, have never needed to go to A&E. However, most painful experience was a pilonidal sinus at the top of my bum crack (!) which was absolute agony. Felt nauseous with the pain of it. Looks like I’ve been pretty lucky! 🤞

Impicciona · 20/01/2019 16:50

Ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Lost a lot of blood. Emergency surgery and 4 weeks recovery.

Ollivander84 · 20/01/2019 16:51

@Jammiebammie yes, a private physio sent me for an MRI and refused to treat me until I had one, then I got a cancellation for surgery so took it. Was diagnosed 30hrs before my planned discectomy so it worked out fairly well. I've lost some feeling and strength in my right leg

OnlineAlienator · 20/01/2019 16:53

Been very lucky and had a lot of horse falls without serious injury and never broken a bone. Was attacked by a bull and my leg needed surgery but was lucky there too as major blood vessels and nerves escaped, apart from impressive scarring, leg is 100%!

Snapsnapsnap · 20/01/2019 16:53

pick torn ligaments really bloody hurt, way more than broken bones (had both).

BagofTeeth · 20/01/2019 16:55

Fractured clavicle as a child. Only time I've broken a bone and didn't even get a cast to show off like a broken arm would have had.

Daffodildainty · 20/01/2019 17:01

-Ruptured appendix — almost died
-40 stitches in ankle after almost cutting off foot on a scythe - almost died from blood loss
Broken wrist, sprained ankle and deep grooves cuts down both shins after fall on tube escalator
Badly Scarred foot after a soup burn
Try to be a bit more careful

herethereandeverywhere · 20/01/2019 17:07

Keillands forceps delivery of DC1. Permanent damage to anal-sphincter muscles resulting in faecal incontinence, broken down episiotomy resulting in granular scarring, probable PTSD and - as a bonus - DC has a permanently scarred face too.

.... and everything I read/heard said it was a CS I should be avoiding. No-one really revealed the truth about being butchered with instruments...

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/01/2019 17:10

I was scalded when I was 3. My mum was boiling an egg, I think. Anyway I ran over to her said. "What are you doing mummy and pulled the pan of boiling water over me.
I was screaming and my mum put a cold compress on my face.
Now I remember that part as though it happened 2 minutes ago.
However I only very very vague recollections of being in the hospital.
