Who would you vote for in a General Election?

If there was a GE tomorrow, which political party would you vote for?

Personally I would vote Labour as I want to see an end to austerity, more money invested in public services and less inequality.

I will register my disgust at the various parties in a way that I see fit. That it annoys you because you don't appear to understand democracy is, is just another bonus.

tinytemper66 · 14/01/2019 18:52

Plaid Cymru 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 but only because I know they will have no chance in my town where a Donkey wearing a red Rosette would win if it stood!

Ucangourownwoo · 14/01/2019 18:56

They won’t care about what you’ve written, the winners and losers won’t care about your spoilt ballot.

Not quite, they get reviewed by the election agents and deputies.

I’ve spoiled a vote in the past, but wouldnt if we had a GE soon - id vote for a smaller party. People not voting because they didn’t think they had to is an issue (anecdotally at least) with the Brexit vote.

My SNP MP has been excellent since she won her seat. SNP have shown themselves to be one trick yes ponies.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 14/01/2019 19:00

Those who intend to spoil their ballot might as well stay at home, scribble on a piece of paper and then flush it down the toilet. Let’s be realistic, either labour or the tories will be in power after the next election, and bothering to turn up at your polling station to write a few swear words on your voting card will have no impact on the political system whatsoever, and those who think otherwise are extremely naive/stupid.

Best not vote for smaller parties or independents who have no chance then either as it will have no impact on the political system.

Calling people who are very politically aware naive/stupid says more about you tbh.

TeacupDrama · 14/01/2019 19:01

it's like choosing between a rock and a hard place but May is better than Corbyn, well probably 90% of the Mp's are better than Corbyn the only ones worse are Corbyn supporters like Abbott and team, he is anti-semitic if he wasn't he would deal with it, he is generally misogynistic in fact a lot of his type of Labour are; a lot of left wing unionists are a bit men for men's jobs

Helmlover · 14/01/2019 19:12

Yes, in a sense voting for smaller parties in a GE is a wasted vote as we have a 2 party political system, so a person voting for the Green Party realistically expecting them to get into power is, and I will use the same word again, naive.

However I have slightly more respect for someone voting for a smaller party or an independent as opposed to someone who tears up their polling card like a petulant child in the hope it will cause some sort of political revolution.

pancaketosser · 14/01/2019 19:13

The idea of power seems to be going to Corbyn's head. And I'm a leftie.

I honestly don't know who I'd vote for. The irony in Corbyn telling May that she is presiding over a shambles is fucking laughable considering Labour seem to hate each other just as much as the tories do.

Not that it matters who I vote for, my Conservative MP would win anyway, even if JC wasn't Labour leader.

Having a general election won't get us away from the fact that the Brexit that 'the people' want is completely impossible and even if it weren't the problems that were there before will still be there because they were caused by our own governments and not the EU.

Thats Ok because I have no respect for someone that tells someone else how to vote.

Helmlover · 14/01/2019 19:26

I’m not telling you how to vote, but I will say that you will have no right to complain about the result, as you will not have made a meaningful contribution-you can’t tear your exam paper up and then expect an A*.

Plaid Cymru becomes more palatable now that Leanne Wood has been chucked out. But as you say - a donkey wearing a red rosette will win in Wales. Who the fuck has replaced that Welsh, Labour, First Minister idiot, Carwyn Jones?

Another bloody uncharasmatic Welsh Labour idiot!

I call for a second referendum 're Welsh devolution! If a second referendum is good enough for Bexit, it's also good enough for Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Why did you start this thread ?
You seem to wish to insult everybody who does not want to support the omnishambles that are the two main parties.

Many of us hope for electoral reform and wish to support either small parties
or none of the above

getting the vote in the UK cost me several thousand pounds
I object to being told how to use it by somebody who got theirs for free

BoneyBackJefferson · 14/01/2019 19:31

You are telling people how to cast their vote, no one that spoils their ballot paper is ripping it up they are casting their vote in a negative fashion. Something that you should be able to do in a true democracy.

This also gives me the right to complain as I have voted just not in the way that you want.

and your exam paper analogy is very poor.

Elfinablender · 14/01/2019 19:32

you will not have made a meaningful contribution-you can’t tear your exam paper up and then expect an A *

Someone who spoils there vote feels there was no valuable contribution to be made. And no-one gets an A* - what an odd idea.

Ucangourownwoo · 14/01/2019 19:40

so a person voting for the Green Party realistically expecting them to get into power is, and I will use the same word again, naive.

It’s not all about being in overall power though - look at the DUP for example. They’re never going to have a prime minister, but they can hold this one to ransom.

The thing about spoiling votes though, is it doesn’t affect the overall result at all. Far better to vote for a smaller party than spoil your vote. And if you must, vote but write your message - it’s easy to see what votes are discarded and which are not as the electoral guidance is all online.

BoneyBackJefferson · 14/01/2019 19:44

but this is wrong voting for a small party that doesn't get in doesn't affect the overall result either.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 14/01/2019 20:47

OP you appear to have started the thread to be a GG tbh.

I refuse to vote Labour with Corbyn in charge and won't vote Tory. You also now say I can't vote for a smaller party. Therefore you leave me with no choice but to spoil my paper.

HTH

DaffydownClock · 14/01/2019 20:51

Quite honestly for the first time in nearly 50 years of voting I cannot imagine who I would vote for. Probably spoil the paper I think.

Gotstuckwiththisname · 14/01/2019 20:52

I genuinely think I would have to spoil my ballot paper. I don't want to vote for anyone!!!

Bluntness100 · 14/01/2019 20:57

Tory.

I feel that if enough people spoil their ballot paper then the overall percentage of spoilt papers might cause a reaction

Well it won't change the result and will be a foot note and a bit of something for Kay burley to talk about on sky news, but not much more than that.

BurpsandHustles · 14/01/2019 21:04

On a swing voter but have voted Labour more than anyone else.

If Frank field led the party I would vote for him and a few others without thought.

However I would not touch corbyn etc with a barge pole. It would throw the country into melt down to have a corbyn government. And it would sink us to have brexit and a corbyn government.

It would be the end of the UK.

So tory. We need continuity right now.

ClanoftheCaveBear · 14/01/2019 21:09

I’d like to vote LibDem but they don’t stand a chance in this constituency (swing seat).
I think our new MP who is Labour is great for the area but Corbyn can’t be allowed to get in. With a different more moderate, less psycho leftie leader I would go Labour for the first time in my life.
So Conservative again.

Treats · 14/01/2019 21:17

Lib Dem. In Richmond Park.

I understand the feeling of frustration but please don’t spoil your ballot paper. There were (I think) 104 spoiled ballot papers in Richmond Park in 2017 and Sarah Olney lost by 45 votes to Zac Goldsmith. If half of those who’d spoilt their ballot paper had voted Lib Dem instead, there would have been one less Tory and one more opposition MP, meaning that Mrs May couldn’t have got a majority by aligning with the DUP.

Think how different things might have been without those spoiled ballots.......

Bluelonerose · 14/01/2019 21:24

I don't understand why spoilt votes aren't counted though?
That's why I was spoiling my vote.
Now I don't no What to do.

BoneyBackJefferson · 14/01/2019 21:28

Think how different things might have been without those spoiled ballots.......

Think how different things might have been if those that didn't vote voted.......

Think about how different things would have been if the Lib Dems hadn't gone back on every single thing that they said they would stand for when they were in the coalition.....

Think about how different things would be if politicians argued the point instead of name calling....

Think about how different things would be if the political parties were legally required to stick to their manifestos once they were elected....

Think about how things would be if people argued their point instead of guilt tripping people.....

Finally think about how different things would be if we had a voting system that actually represented what/who people voted for....
