I'll start:

Vienetta's especially mint
Viscount biscuits
Nesquik milkshake

I had a childhood apparently obsessed by foods my parents declared not for daily consumption!

Ribena instead of supermarket brand squash
Whole loaves of crusty white bread (we always had sliced wholemeal)
Parents who smoked occasionally with wine or coffee
Conservatories

Trippedupagain · 12/01/2019 18:24

Wine.

VictoriaBun · 12/01/2019 18:25

I'm getting on a bit
Toilet roll holders
Crustless sandwiches
Grated cheese
Having a home phone
told you I was old

Anything that wasn’t cubed, boiled potatoes and pieces of plain, brown meat.

I didn’t have rice, cous cous, pasta or noodles until I went to university. Never had anything that was a “dish” (e.g lasagne, moussaka or anything else that needs assembling).

We weren’t allowed condiments inc salt or vinegar.

So everything was a revelation to me. In fact, I’m still discovering new foodstuffs in my 40s!

Lindy2 · 12/01/2019 18:56

Things I remember as being special moments during my life.

  • getting my first duvet instead of sheets and blankets
  • trying a Babycham
  • Making my first microwave ready meal. It was a prawn curry.
  • cooking a frozen pizza at home (I grilled it rather than putting it in the oven Blush)
I believed it all to be very sophisticated and modern. Grin
VictoriaBun · 12/01/2019 19:31

I've just remembered another one.
A few friends of mine thought my mum 'posh' because we didn't have a chip pan permanently kept with semi solid lard in it on the oven top.

Lucozade....in the tall glass bottle with cellophane

Knittedfairies · 12/01/2019 20:40

You knew you were poorly if you got Lucozade!

TSSDNCOP · 12/01/2019 21:16

You thought you must be near to death if DM broke out the Lucozade.

When I left home I had a bottle every week.

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2019 21:20

My mum used to buy some sort of Orange Juice concentrate from the Chemist. No idea what that was.

The people next door had the Alpine Pop man i was insanely Envy.

Quiche. As a working class kid, I thought this was the epitome of posh food, and definitely not for the likes of us.

M&S food. I knew they sold food, because I had taken the bus into the big city (ie Derby) but we definitely couldn’t afford to shop there. A few years later, I went to my then BF’s parents house for dinner (we called it ‘tea’ of course). They were definitely posh. We had M&S salmon en croute with baby vegetables and white wine. It was the poshest meal I had ever eaten Grin.

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2019 21:31

My BF's mother had the Eternal Beau dinner service. Fancy.

AlexaAmbidextra · 12/01/2019 21:43

Chicken in a Basket at the Chicken Inn. They gave you plastic gloves and you ate it with your hands. I thought this was very exotic. 😂

converseandjeans · 12/01/2019 21:52

MrsJayy · 12/01/2019 22:01

Oh yes Lucozade when you were ill I am old enough to remember the chemist selling lucozade i loved the cellophane round the bottle .

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 12/01/2019 22:06

I always knew I was really ill when DM bought that Grin

Dimedollar · 12/01/2019 22:12

@Sparklingbrook we had that dinner service, my dm thought she was the bees knees until she spotted the Barlows had it on Corrie.

I loved going for tea at my best friend's house, they used to serve everything in dishes to help yourself from, it felt so fancy.

Youmadorwhat · 12/01/2019 22:13

Anything that involved hotels and airports 😂😂 then I lived abroad and travelled loads and learned to loathe airports and airport hotels!! Although obvs I still love a luxury hotel stay 💕

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2019 22:14

It certainly was a thing of beauty in 1989 Grin
