I'll start:

Vienetta's especially mint
Viscount biscuits
Nesquik milkshake

I had a childhood apparently obsessed by foods my parents declared not for daily consumption!

I thought the massive Tesco in town was posh,it seemed so exotic after our little village shop.

BearPear · 12/01/2019 13:31

Vesta chicken supreme, my parent’s “treat” tea which wasn’t for children. Those noodles that puffed up when fried always delighted me.
Berni Inns, I was allowed a special coffee with cream on top, served n a wine glass. The height of sophistication!
Duvets - my first duvet after always having sheets & blankets was a revelation.

ChiaraRimini · 12/01/2019 13:32

Anything branded. My mother would never have dreamed of wasting money on Heinz ketchup, fairy liquid etc. I do buy Fairy now as I think it is genuinely better and it makes me feel very extravagant!

MacarenaFerreiro · 12/01/2019 13:33

Getting your fizzy drinks delivered by a man in a lorry who would pick up the empties a week later.

Height of sophistication.

rockingthelook · 12/01/2019 13:53

Fry Crisp and Dry instead of lard
Ski Yoghurts
Club biscuits
Paper kitchen roll
Coloured loo roll
Central heating
More than 3 pairs of shoes per person (pumps, school and best!)
Likewise more than 2 coats, school and best
House telephone

FreshlyWashed · 12/01/2019 14:23

Another one saying Duvets - my aunt/uncle/cousins all had them. I was so jealous.

I always thought Baby Sham looked amazing. My parents never let me try it.

Curtains that were tied with that rope.

AhoyAhoy · 12/01/2019 14:41

Tin foil and kitchen roll. Such a luxury to buy as much as I want as an adult. Dad used to bring home scratchy tissues from his factory. And we NEVER had foil. Oven trays were utterly disgusting.

Schloer and Ribena.

HildaZelda · 12/01/2019 14:45

I see your Vienetta and raise you Romantica.

Now there was a posh pudding! Or so I thought . . . . .

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 12/01/2019 15:15

Freezers, video recorders and computers ( in the years before our family had those things).

Agree with Arctic roll!

A friend's mother used to wear fancy high heels and fur jackets and drive a gold coloured Ford Capri. They also lived in a bungalow. That all seemed so fancy to me! But in later years it turned out not to have been a happy home, which was sad to find out.

MeetJoeTurquoise · 12/01/2019 15:17

I always envied friends with houses that had all matching, brand new furniture instead of our eclectic mix of what I now know was actually tasteful furniture. In fact my parents still have most of it.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 12/01/2019 15:29

Oh and also... shopping in a supermarket (Safeway) and taking the shopping home by car! Seemed very fancy back then, seems so ordinary now.

winsinbin · 12/01/2019 15:39

I miss Sara Lee gateaux, warmed slightly in the microwave and served with cream they were heaven. At Christmas DH and I were telling DC how unlucky they were to never have tried one.

I thought sliced ham bought from a shop with orange bread crumbs round the edge was very posh. The only ham we ever had was home boiled bacon sliced from the joint and served with cabbage and potatoes. I love it now but back then I yearned for a wafer thin slice of shop ham.

Birdsgottafly · 12/01/2019 15:43

"Tinned red salmon
Mr Kipling French Fancies
Vol au vents"

Throw in some Vienese whirls and frozen cheese pasties, (for the kids) and you'd have one of my Mums special teas, if anyone was coming to visit.

ZsaZsaMc · 12/01/2019 15:43

The Harvester Grin

ChristinaMarlowe · 12/01/2019 16:07

@Knittedfairies 🤣🤣 Yes! What's that about?! We always had cauliflower but never broccoli (cauli with attitude made me laugh!)

We also had carrot and swede (mashed together with a bit of butter) with a Sunday roast but it was always referred to as carrot and turnip. No idea.

Didn't get to have Macdonalds or ANY takeaway EVER until we - siblings - were old enough to buy our own food so that was all very aspirational, In fairness our parents had very little money but it seemed very posh when friends went out for dinner or ordered a Friday night takeaway.
Also never had any kind of holiday but didn't see them as particularly fancy. Lasagne, though? Yes. Very fancy, especially with salad and garlic bread 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

gottachangethename1 · 12/01/2019 16:20

Beefeater restaurants
Velvet knickerbockers
Holidays abroad
Hostess trolley
Any alcoholic drink that wasn’t pale ale or Babycham.

TSSDNCOP · 12/01/2019 16:24

Hampers
Hot tubs/jacuzzi baths
Blue Nun wine
Cocktails with umbrellas

Notso · 12/01/2019 16:44

My friend had a oxblood red leather three piece suite, a video player with loads of videos in those leather look cases that looked like books and they lived above the corner shop they owned and could go downstairs and just take stuff off the shelves. I thought they lived like kings.

topcat2014 · 12/01/2019 16:48

Remember a school friend with a white leather sofa etc - seemed v cool.

Never fancied one as an adult - too cold!

Moussemoose · 12/01/2019 17:01

A teacher had a brown - soft top - Ford Capri. I thought that was soooo cool.

nottakingthisanymore · 12/01/2019 17:11

Valance sheet on the bed, wall to wall carpets, doorbell instead of a knocker, pelmet and tie backs on curtains, soda stream, vienetta, after 8s, Ferrero rocher, ski yogurt and Avon make up.

Mokepon · 12/01/2019 17:13

Hahaha opened this thinking Viennetta and After Eights!!
The houses on the other side of the road because they had their own front door.

AliasGrape · 12/01/2019 17:23

@HildaZelda yes to Romantica, I used to beg my mum to buy it after encountering it at a friend’s house, vienetta didn’t seem quite so exciting after that.

Britvic 55s - so fancy.

Polkapjs · 12/01/2019 17:59

Fresh orange juice. By this I mean in a carton obviously. Not from the actual fruit. Served as a starter in the hotel we stayed at once- mum and dad really really pushed the boat out that year. It was a massive deal to them. Was a great holiday. I fancied the hotel owners’ son and got sunburned in an effort to look bronzed and delicious. I’m ginger

MissMarplesKnitting · 12/01/2019 18:04

Orangina in the little glass bottles. Ditto Perrier water. Very sophisticated. Foreign.

My cousins had a soda stream and a commodore 64. I was so jealous. We weren't well off, my trainers were from the mini mart (the chain went on to become B&M bargains....we had J&M!!) but my cousins had actual branded ones. I was green and was well chuffed if they made it to me being passed down.

Meals out and takeaways, very rare for us.

Foreign holidays (see orangina and Perrier) were for rich, sophisticated people)

Mr Frosty. All the richer, cooler kids had them....
