I'll start:

Vienetta's especially mint
Viscount biscuits
Nesquik milkshake

I had a childhood apparently obsessed by foods my parents declared not for daily consumption!

Angie169 · 15/01/2019 21:12

Coloured bathroom suites. Especially if you have a bidet and especially if it wasn't a standard colour.

I used to tell my 8 year old friends in the eighties that we had a new green bathroom. 'But it's not Avocado it's Sage!!!'

There was a clear flash of recognition... "naked is fancy!!!"

MorningsEleven · 16/01/2019 08:45

@Angie169

Yes, most definitely. A shower was the thing you put on the bath taps to wash your hair during your Sunday night bath.
I was 15 before I saw an avocado or an aubergine (posh friends).

I remember my mum discovering duvets in the early 80s - but they weren’t duvets then but ‘Continental Quilts’. It was a very exciting day when our beds were stripped of scratchy blankets, nylon sheets ( I swear the static from those could have powered a small town) and replaced with the MARVEL of THE CONTINENTAL QUILT!

Mum used to make ‘Flan’ and when a (posher) friend came to tea she was asked if she liked flan. Friend was very confused until we described it as cheese, onion and tomato baked in an egg pie and she went ‘Ohhh you mean Quiche Lorraine’ - I was gobsmacked at her level of utter sophistication!

At Christmas dad used to buy two cartons of ‘Just Juice’ - one orange and one apple which was a massive treat. We were allowed a thimble ful at breakfast everyday til it ran out!

Going to C&A to buy a pair of jeans was a massive deal - we usually went on the first day of the summer hols. Trip would include a cinema visit (clear carton of Kia Ora and a tub of ice cream from the usher in the interval) then a sit down fish and chip supper before we got the bus home. I enjoyed those first days of summer more than Christmas!

Things we take for granted seemed so special back then.

MrsJayy · 16/01/2019 09:37

Avacados were a fad end of the 70s early 80s but they were called avacado pears I remember my aunt having avacado pears she had avacado and prawns fancy

Beerflavourednipples · 16/01/2019 09:50

Coloured bathroom suites. Especially if you have a bidet and especially if it wasn't a standard colour.

My friend's house had a burgundy bathroom which not only had a bidet but a big corner bath with (carpeted) steps up to the bath. 80s tastic!

MrsJayy · 16/01/2019 10:00

Beef Im wondering if we shared the same friend the bathroom description is just the also her parents had come round and see the bathroom party !

Elflocks · 16/01/2019 21:55

Liquid Soap
Shaped notepads
Munchies
Cornettos

Neptunesgiraffe · 19/01/2019 14:35

I keep thinking about this thread and remembering things. Does anyone remember that soap that had a magnet in it (could've been Imperial Leather) and you attached it to the magnetic dispenser. To me, as a child, that was the absolute height of sophistication. We never had one, though.

Bouledeneige · 19/01/2019 14:54

So many familiar posts! Mine were:

Shop bought puddings like viennetta
Soda stream and fizzy pop
Fresh orange juice (we only had it for Xmas breakfast)
Salmon from a tin
Meat paste
Going to a restaurant
M&S ready meals
The sweet trolley
Soft toilet paper!
A hostess trolley
Fitted carpets
Electric carving knife
Duvets
Having more than one TV in your house
Colour TV
Double glazing (a rich-ish friend had it in her house which was next to a very busy road)
Going abroad and staying in hotel complexes, beach holidays, more than one holiday a year
Going to trendy hairdressers
A Ford Capri
Asti Spumante
Mateus rose

FishCanFly · 19/01/2019 15:05

McDonald's was a massive treat
Oh yes. Not from UK originally so it was so "foreign and fancy" (and rather expensive at the time and place)

larry55 · 19/01/2019 15:34

Can anyone else remember kunzle cakes. The outside was made of a thick chocolate shell and the inside was sponge cake covered in butter icing. They were only ever for very special occasions but they were delicious.

Mind you anything with chocolate was unusual in our house.

longwayoff · 20/01/2019 07:09

Ohhhhh, Kunzle cakes. I think they also made a full size coffee and walnut cake, walnut sponge layered with coffee butter icing, whole thing then covered in white fondant with walnuts on top. You can tell from the detailed memory how much I loved them on their very rare appearance in our house.

longwayoff · 20/01/2019 07:14

Nylon sheets! Gift from MIL. 20 minutes in bed with them then straight into the bin. Vile things.

Miltonkeynesmummy · 20/01/2019 07:18

I tried a canapé as a teenager- a mini cheddar with sliced tomato on top. I thought it was the most sophisticated party food Hmm

KitNCaboodle · 20/01/2019 07:19

Vienetta
Prawn cocktail in an avocado for a starter
Orange juice
Fruit other than apples and satsumas
Downstairs bathroom

longwayoff · 20/01/2019 07:20

Kunzle? No, the walnut one was Fuller's perhaps?

Ladymargarethall · 20/01/2019 07:37

We were denied Kindle cakes, which made them very desirable.them
My friend's father had an Austin 1100. It was dark green and I can still remember the number plate. We only had a Morris traveller. I really wanted us to have one like it.
Same friend had a Club biscuit at morning break every day.She also introduced me to Ski yoghurt (the full of fitness food) in those pots which were bigger at the bottom than the top.
And she visited relatives abroad every summer.
I thought she was the height of sophistication. Grin
