Sorry, meant to do bold for a quote there obviously

InSightMars · 13/01/2019 15:52

California, USA. Been here 15 years and on mumsnet about 2 years. NC when I get bored with current nick though.

InSightMars · 13/01/2019 15:55

What made me leave? Divorce, got my life back, started traveling, met American DH on one of travels. A few years ldr then, with kids grown and off doing their own things and with their enthusiastic support, i emigrated and married DH.

seanceinterrupted · 13/01/2019 16:40

Small European country not yet mentioned (but very outing; doubt there's many of us here). Australian originally but was many years in the uk.

missclimpson · 13/01/2019 17:00

We left the UK when we retired nearly 15 years ago. Moved to France because we speak the language and DH had worked here as a consultant. DD with family in UK, DS and family in Spain. We live deep in the countryside and have a big organic garden, I still teach quite a bit, our friends are French and though we may downsize, we will stay in France. We go back quite frequently to the UK to see family but always pleased to come home to France.

headshoulderskneesandtoe · 13/01/2019 17:11

Another one in Qatar! Although I was an expat in the UK also. British husband, met him while traveling and he got a great job opportunity here, so made the decision to leave the UK.

Never meet anyone else here in Qatar who admits to being a MNetter tho, but hello!

Welshcake77 · 13/01/2019 18:03

Why I left? I had a German degree and wanted to work in the country for a bit to use the language properly so found a job in the city I wanted to move to and left UK after graduating. Really loved my job but started missing family more as time went on and started to consider a transfer back around 5 years later. Then I met my now DH and two kids later I’m here for the foreseeable!

Sgtmajormummy · 13/01/2019 18:23

Why did I leave?
My degree was in MFL.
After graduating I joined an international company and worked for their branches in Ireland, France x2, Italy and then was asked to start up another Italian branch.
Did that, met and married DH, left the company when he changed job had first DC and then set up on my own in the new city. That gave me the flexibility to bring up 2 DC and share the work load with colleagues.

Italy has been good to me, I’m probably going to die here BUT I always expected to live and die a British citizen...

NakedAvenger · 13/01/2019 18:39

Offered an international secondment with my job. Loved it. Came back to London: realised unaffordable housing, awful journey to work, poor quality of life and then Brexit... came back out to NZ permanently.

I adore London and it's still my 'home' but it can become a trap and difficult to live in sometimes. We went from a 1 bed rented flat in south london to a 3 bed property on the beach.

LittleMy77 · 13/01/2019 18:51

I left the UK as I had a job offer / promotion from the US company I worked for in London. They offered to sponsor and pay for my visa and then green card so I grabbed it with both hands.

I'd split up with a long term partner, and was making lots of crappy life choices, and thought "fuck it, why not?" I intended to come for ~18 months, and then met a yank, got married and had a kid Grin

I want to come back to the UK but circumstances with DS and schooling means the US is a way better bet atm

bluetongue · 13/01/2019 20:42

Hello Girldownunder. You’re just down the road from me Smile

How does everyone else in Aus cope with the heat? I was born here and hate it! Now my chance to move to the UK has passed me by I dream of moving to the South Island of Ndw Zealand or maybe Tasmania.

HoraceCope · 13/01/2019 22:02
Wine cheers - what ever time zone you are in Grin

South Eastern Europe.

Autumn101 · 14/01/2019 04:33

Reasons we left were for an adventure really! DH grew up as an expat child and only has happy, positive feelings about it so it was always what he wanted for our DC, we left UK when they were 3 and 4. So far it’s been great for us and is working out, we have the attitude that we’ll do it as long as it works for everyone in the family, once that stops we re-evaluate the situation.

ShanghaiDiva · 14/01/2019 04:45

Why did I leave?
Dh's job - he was offered a position in Germany for two years, we had no children at the time so decided to go. 24 years later we now live in China. Both my parents and dh's had spent time working overseas (Germany, Mexico, US, Yemen) so it didn't seem that unusual to move.
Ds lives in the UK and we will go back.

Aebj · 14/01/2019 05:00

Perth Australia
We moved here 10 years ago. Best thing we ever did. We are all now citizens.
Wouldn’t live anywhere else and have only been back to the uk once , for 3 weeks in this time

dontevenblink · 14/01/2019 05:17

Lived in South island NZ for a few years and now been in north island for a few years. Plan on staying in current location (but never say never, we get itchy feet! But much harder now 4 dc are almost all at school...). Hopefully getting citizenship this year.

We moved as dh got offered a job to play a big part in the rebuild straight after the Christchurch earthquake. A lot of people thought we were crazy moving to an earthquake zone, but was an offer we couldn't really turn down and has been a big adventure... meant we got to travel and then job transfer took us to another beautiful part of the country, so worked out well!

Waves to all my fellow NZers!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 14/01/2019 05:25

I'm also in Perth, Australia! I'm an immigrant though, not an expat. I'm very excited to be going for my citizenship test in April. Why did I move here? The economy is Ireland tanked, we were sick of the weather, and we fancied an adventure! And the reason we will stay is because we like it better here.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 14/01/2019 05:44

California, and don't think there is a version here.

AwakeNow · 14/01/2019 06:04

@colbyandmontysmum
W5 is shooting on PEI, I believe it is this coming week-end. They are talking to adoptees who are searching for their bio family, and want the adoption records unsealed.

AwakeNow · 14/01/2019 06:17

Everybody seems so well travelled! I was born in Canada, and still here, Toronto area.
