Mispronounced words

I have embarrassingly only just realised that "ballache" isn't pronounced ballash... obviously I know the word ballache but I'd always pictured it in my mind as two words or at least hyphenated.

Are there any words that you mispronounce due to only having seen it written down and not said aloud?

Cadbury said that cream egg is correct.

When I read the word Epitome I ALWAYS read it as Epp-i-toem even though I know it's not pronounced like that. My brain just cannot read it properly!

katekat383 · 07/01/2019 10:41

Epitome as eP - it - ome.

katekat383 · 07/01/2019 10:41

Sorry. Should have read the post above!

I remember reading Mallory Towers and St Clare’s as a child and being baffled by this game called “LA-cross-ee.” I didn’t realise until I was teaching in the private sector myself...

But how did you pronounce Alicia's name?

In my head it was always Alis-ear but my best friend insisted it was Aleesha. Was one of the few things we could never agree on.

MikeUniformMike · 07/01/2019 15:22

It was Alicia to rhyme with Patricia (Trisha).
I had never heard the Aleesha & Al-issy-a pronunciations until recently and they have ruined the name for me.

Holidayshopping · 07/01/2019 15:51

I always read it as Aliss-ee-a

I’m still not exactly sure how it was supposed to be pronounced! I’m sure Enid wouldn’t have pronounced it Aleesha?

AnneOfCleavage · 07/01/2019 17:48

My DM read the books to me when I was very young and she pronounced Alicia as Alice-see-ah so the name Alice normally spoken but with the see-ah added to it. From then on that is how I read it when I got to read them so was shocked when I was given the stories on cassette tape (eek - my age) and it was pronounced Alissy-ah. She felt a different character after that 😂

elephantoverthehill · 07/01/2019 17:52

I used pronounce it, in my head, as Alicka.

Izzy24 · 07/01/2019 20:04

I have a friend who talks about the escape goat.......

ReaganSomerset · 07/01/2019 20:06

The escape goat! Grin

3out · 07/01/2019 20:36

That damn goat, always running off!

memememum · 07/01/2019 21:21

The mockturtle in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland "no wise fish would go anywhere without a porpoise" ... "why, if a fish came to me, and told me he was going on a journey, I should say 'with what porpoise?'" "Don't you mean "purpose?" Said Alice.
I'm reading this to my DCs as a bedtime story at the moment, and having only seen TV adaptations I had no idea it's just chock full of plays on words. We have all been in fits of giggles at the lovely ridiculousness of it!

sanityisamyth · 12/01/2019 16:39

Batt-ries annoys me. It's batt-er-ies

WilyMinx · 12/01/2019 17:30

I pronounced quay as kway for the longest time.

Papergirl1968 · 12/01/2019 18:09

There's a part of Walsall called Caldmore, pronounced calmer/karma.
I heard police once solved a murder as the offender was heard by a witness pronouncing it Calmer/karma rather than Caldmore so they knew it was a local person.
Or it might have been the other way round, and they knew it was a stranger to the area as he pronounced it Caldmore.
Sorry, it was a long time ago. But anyway the point that the right or wrong pronunciation helped solve the case!

OutComeTheWolves · 13/01/2019 14:16

Just popped back on here as yesterday, thanks to an episode of Blaze and the monster machines, I now know that centrifugal force is not pronounced cen-tree-foo-gal.Blush

sanityisamyth · 13/01/2019 18:00

@OutComeTheWolves how did you pronounce it? Americans will pronounce it cen-trif-I-cal whereas the British will pronounce it cen-tri-few-gal

GertrudeWilloughby · 13/01/2019 18:07

Cen-tree-fee-gul

GertrudeWilloughby · 13/01/2019 18:08

Bollocks! Cen-tree-few-gul
