Mispronounced words

I have embarrassingly only just realised that "ballache" isn't pronounced ballash... obviously I know the word ballache but I'd always pictured it in my mind as two words or at least hyphenated.

Are there any words that you mispronounce due to only having seen it written down and not said aloud?

When I was a little girl one of my favourite authors who wrote books about children and horses, was (can't-remember-who) Campbell, which I thought of as Camp Bell. I read my way through all her books in the library one summer.Must have been about 8 at the time.
How old was I when I realised that my Nanny Camble and the author shared the same surname?
Dunno, but certainly not that summerBlushSmile

Thirty years ago a teacher told me I was wrong for pronouncing Pasty as Pay-stee. It referred to the food item, a Pah-stee. But pasty and pasty are spelled the same so I don’t see how I was wrong? Pasty can indeed be correctly pronounced Pay-stee. Still bugs me, I never forgot it.

@pinktransit But truculent IS pronounced truck-yoo-lent??

BedraggledBlitz · 04/01/2019 23:37

Minutia was "minute tie" for ages
Placate was "plack ate"

And loads more that I picked up from reading and had never heard used.

Sashkin · 04/01/2019 23:37

I knew the written word segue; I knew the spoken word 'segway.' I was 30 before I realised they were the same word

The existence of the Segway scooter-thing didn’t fucking help, thank you very much whoever came up with that name.

iklboo · 04/01/2019 23:40

Laconic = with a ck sound, not a s sound in the middle as someone 'hilariously' pointed out to me.

Joanne721 · 04/01/2019 23:46

Until someone corrected me,i used to pronounce "Quayside" as "Quayside"Grin

CharlieandLolaCat · 05/01/2019 00:15

@Silkei you did what I did with @pinktransit's post!

I thought picturesque was picture-skwee for A LONG time ......

Holidayshopping · 05/01/2019 00:36

Placate was "plack ate"

That’s how I say it!?

MerryInthechelseahotel · 05/01/2019 00:42

How else would you say placate?

iklboo · 05/01/2019 00:45

Maybe the PP means PLACK ate, rather than plack ATE?

SamanthaJayne4 · 05/01/2019 00:45

We have had a lot of building work done over the years. I have often heard scaffolding referred to as scaffling. OH when young called the Grand Prix grand pricks! He wasn't joking. My parents' faces were Grin

Sashkin · 05/01/2019 00:46

How else would you say placate?

I think this is an accent thing. I say pla-KATE with the stress in the second syllable, I assumed the previous poster was saying PLACK-at, or PLACK-et, or something.

ReaganSomerset · 05/01/2019 00:47

Hermione was Her-mee-own until the films came out.
I dislike when people pronounce the j in jalapeño, the ll in paella and the z in chorizo using the English phonemes.

ReaganSomerset · 05/01/2019 00:49

Also got given PE shorts in primary school by my gran. They said 'Phuket'. Oh, the fun we had...

ARandomPoster · 05/01/2019 01:15

Not quite a mispronounciation, but I had a boss who, when asking me to work overtime would always follow the request by saying "you shall be duly renumerated".

It really bothered me that she had to be all posh and fussy about her wording. I mean, what's wrong with just saying "I'll pay you" like a normal person? And I would be wincing and thinking "it's remunerated. If you're gonna be all lah-de-dah about it at least get the word right!"

EBearhug · 05/01/2019 01:26

I thought picturesque was picture-skwee for A LONG time ......

We still talk of picture-skew views in our family, which dates back to a childhood mispronunciation.

Andylion · 05/01/2019 01:55

Thanks, elephant.

safariboot · 05/01/2019 02:04

you shall be duly renumerated...it's remunerated

Wait, what?

Googles

Shock I always thought it was renumeration!

brizzledrizzle · 05/01/2019 02:11

Segue isn't pronounced Segway is it? I'd say seeg Blush

nolno · 05/01/2019 02:15

I think the placate thing is possibly using the US pronunciation play-cate? Can't think of an alternate British pronunciation

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 05/01/2019 02:20

There are so many words even here that I’ve never heard said aloud and would have no idea how to pronounce. For fear for making myself look like a nob, I avoid using big words! Grin

AlexaAmbidextra · 05/01/2019 02:42

As a child I once asked for some skweepees. I thought that was how you pronounced Schweppes. 😄

ChristmasSprite · 05/01/2019 03:02

Hermione
Hearing ppl say falla-fell
Same as when some say 'pot' 'pourry'
Didn't know about segue being segway?!
Play-cate, or plah-CATE
