Mispronounced words

I have embarrassingly only just realised that "ballache" isn't pronounced ballash... obviously I know the word ballache but I'd always pictured it in my mind as two words or at least hyphenated.

Are there any words that you mispronounce due to only having seen it written down and not said aloud?

Samwidge is my husband's preferred pronunciation!

IndigoSpritz · 06/01/2019 15:32

Amateur is my favourite mispronunciation. If I hear someone say 'ama - cher' my punching fist gets restless.

MikeUniformMike · 06/01/2019 15:45

It annoys me too, and there seems to be a trend of saying s as sh. As in 'Lasht year'.
I also dislike sickth

3out · 06/01/2019 15:45

Sangwidge is just accent though, surely? My Glaswegian flatmate would have a sangwich for her break-fast. It wasn’t until I’d heard her strange (to me) way of saying breakfast that I appreciated the actual meaning of the word! I’d never even thought about it before.

I dislike the pronunciation Joolery for Jewelry

I caught myself saying "joolry" the other day. Even worse!

SuziQ10 · 06/01/2019 17:19

My friend says hosp-ical instead of hospital.

I've always wondered why. Surely everyone has seen the word hospital written down and knows it has a T in it.

BlackPrism · 06/01/2019 17:59

@HalfBloodPrincess well your DP can calm down as those are regional variations

BlackPrism · 06/01/2019 18:01

@flumpybear BELVOIR IS PRONOUNCED BEAVER?? Wtf

BlackPrism · 06/01/2019 18:05

I also know a lot of people who mispronounce Marylebone- when they live there. One of them refused to believe me that it is marl-eh-bone because the bus robot voice doesn't say that 🙄🙄🙄 the robot voice pronounces many many words incorrectly.

HalfBloodPrincess · 06/01/2019 18:14

@BlackPrism I’m a Londoner, he’s Welsh, so I’m surprised it’s all we disagree on.

(Although We have had quite a few disagreements about how to teach ds the correct pronunciation of ‘tooth’ though 🤣)

HalfBloodPrincess · 06/01/2019 18:16

Haha I’m from Plaistow. Want to punch the tannoy whenever it says “plaaay- stow”

MikeUniformMike · 06/01/2019 18:18

How about Pasture-ised (or pashderised) milk

iklboo · 06/01/2019 18:30

Take your sat nav to Wales. It has terrible trouble pronouncing the place names. Grin

tillytoodles1 · 06/01/2019 18:32

My Dad used to get loads of place names wrong, eg Chicago (Chi not Shi), Arkansas he used to rhyme with Kansas.

MikeUniformMike · 06/01/2019 18:35

Ooh, we need examples, iklboo.
I often hear howlers like Betsy Coyd, Caple Coo-rig, Lan Wurst...

And please, Plaid Cymru is NOT pronounced Plide Koomry. It's pronouced Plide Come-ry (nearly). I'm looking at you Jenny Murray.

KatoPotato · 06/01/2019 18:43

Surely Epilogue is Eppy-log??

iklboo · 06/01/2019 18:55

Ours pronounced Caerwys as 'car-wise' and Denbigh as Denbig. I was dying to take it to Llanfair Grin

3out · 06/01/2019 19:10

I once listened to the ward clerk go round all the patients asking them if they’d like mine-strown soup for lunch the next day

The train voice used to say Ard Gay when approaching Ardgay. Don’t know if it still does

littlemeitslyn · 06/01/2019 19:11

Remunerated

MikeUniformMike · 06/01/2019 19:26

Ooh, thanks iklboo. Care-wiss is horrible if you speak welsh but Car-wise is funny. I used to work with people who said they lived in Kugg-early.
Not heard Denbig before, I've heard Roo-thin, but the one I hate the most is Rudlund

(if you're wondering, anyone, Ruthin is pronounced Ri-thin, Denbigh Denby, Rhuddlan is Rhudd(rhymes with 'with' )-Lan.
Caergwrle and Caerwys don't have easy transliterations.

WhirlieGigg · 07/01/2019 03:55

Creme Egg. I always say it like Cream Egg!

PattiStanger · 07/01/2019 07:19

Creme egg is cream egg if you mean the Cadbury sweet

Holidayshopping · 07/01/2019 07:41

Creme Egg. I always say it like Cream Egg!

Errrr, is there another way to say it?!

3out · 07/01/2019 08:16

Crem euff? ;)

SaturdayNext · 07/01/2019 08:37

The cream pronunciation must be correct, there's no accent on Creme.
