Police in Phoenix are investigating after a woman who has been in a vegetative state for 10 YEARS gave birth.

I have no words... I feel so sorry for that poor woman, her family and the baby who will grow up effectively an orphan. How did no-one notice she was pregnant?! How does this happen in a supposedly civilised country??

Well seeing as she was fertile enough to be pregnant (for the DM 'journalists snooping on here she was pregnant from rape - nothing 'alleged', she 100% was incapable of giving consent) in a then surely she must have been having periods? Did non of her carers notice her periods had stopped?

Vegetative state or in a coma doesn't necessarily mean unconscious though. It means functioning at a really low level. So yes she can probably feel pain and make sounds.

I don’t think this is as uncommon as you’d imagine. I went to a work seminar by a clinical psychologist talking about consent in the legal system for adults with learning disabilities. She spoke about a case of a young woman with cerebral palsy and severe learning disabilities who was found to be 5 months pregnant. I can’t remember the details but a court case was held and a best interest decision made that she should have an abortion. However the father/rapist turned out to be a staff member who said she’d consented to sex. He wasn’t even prosecuted.

There is no way the staff didn't know. No way. I cannot believe it. I worked as a carer, you quickly learn every intimate detail about a person, especially those who cannot move for themselves. Bedsores happen often and grow quickly. Cleaning and checking should be happening regularly, with notes being written every time.

What on earth is happening in that care home facility? The entire operation is suspect, not just the male staff. This is awful on so many levels.

In the US I think you have to demonstrate that any recovery of cognitive functions above a vegetative state is assessed as impossible by authoritative medical opinion before the courts will give you permission to withdraw life support. Patients in a PVS can often breathe unaided, so you msu have to withdraw nutrition/hydration in order for them to die. This may well explain why she has been in a vegetative state for so long.

I don’t think rape is covered by federal law, so it most probably depends on the definition of rape in Arizona. Which may or may not be the same as that in California (which is where the Brock Turner case originated).

Either no one took care of her for at least 6 months in which case they have a neglect charge hanging over their heads aswell or they knew and they covered up.
