Why is it tin-openers don't last 5 minutes?

Another bloody one just broken, I've not had it a year Xmas Hmm It wasn't a cheapie either, cost about a tenner from Tescos. Harumpf... When I was a kid they'd bloody last your entire childhood!

We’ve had ours for 10+ years. I think it was from Ikea. Never broken one yet!

Although probably just jinxed myself.

ScreamingValenta · 31/12/2018 19:25

What kind are you buying? The ones with multiple gears are the most fragile in my experience. The 'magi-can' type seem to last a long time, at the expense of having the whole of the top of the can chopped off (which I don't like).

ForgotTheBastardElfAgain · 31/12/2018 19:26

Had ours for years too. I think the one my parents have is older than me

Gunpowder · 31/12/2018 19:26

You need the oxo good grips one.

BrettAndersonscheekbones · 31/12/2018 19:28

My MIL bought us an electric one about 10 years ago and it is brill. Use it every day. Never broken.

TulipDaisy · 31/12/2018 19:29

OXO good grips, I thought it'd last longer being better quality

Oh! I’d ask for a new one/refund!

TheSpottedZebra · 31/12/2018 19:32

I've had mine since uni. So def well over 20 years.
And my parents have had the same one forever. I'd say minimum 35 years.

Maybe we just don't eat much tinned food?

Joke stealth boast there, by the way.

TheSpottedZebra · 31/12/2018 19:33

Deffo contact Oxo direct in that case. Let them put it right.

greendale17 · 31/12/2018 19:36

Mine is 8 years old from Lakeland

SoyDora · 31/12/2018 19:39

We’ve had ours for 9 years.

Esqueleto · 31/12/2018 19:40

I got one from tkmaxx with a 25 yr guarantee. It broke within a year. I couldn't remember the brand or keep my receipt so couldn't even do anything about it 😂
Now I get the cheapie £1 butterfly ones from Morrisons

AdoreTheBeach · 31/12/2018 19:41

I still have mine - 28 years. Manual, bog standard one from IKEA.

Moominfan · 31/12/2018 19:45

Got an electric freestanding opener. Favourite gadget by far

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/12/2018 19:48

Ours is about 30 years old and came from Woolworth. Still working.

FrancesFryer · 31/12/2018 19:50

Are you left handed? I found dh used to destroy manual tin openers in no time at all. I bought an electric one and it's lasted years

lastqueenofscotland · 31/12/2018 19:52

I use the really old style ones that are like two tiny sticks of metal and they last forever and cost 1/2 quid. I replace them cause I lose them not cause they break

OhmydearGod · 31/12/2018 19:52

I have the same issue with potato peelers. Some of them even fake the string wrapped around the handle look but without the actual string around the handle holding everything in place strength.

I have an electric can opener. It's been going strong for at least 8 years. It also is a bottle opener and knife sharpener. Looks ugly but does the job.

graysor · 31/12/2018 20:33

Mine is a bog standard one from Sainsbury’s bought for my first year at uni over 15 years ago. Still going strong here.

dangermouseisace · 31/12/2018 20:36

I’ve got 2, and have had both of them well over 10 years! One is from ikea, think the other is from John Lewis.

Notso · 31/12/2018 20:37

Mine is barbrantia, I've had it for 13 years since we did up the kitchen.

Lovewinemorethanhusband · 31/12/2018 20:40

I have real issues with tin openers , they dont last 5 minutes I think it's because I'm left handed and hold them funny, I gave in and got an electric one and love it !

Honeyroar · 31/12/2018 20:44

Older ones are much better. We kept going through modern ones, no matter how posh or bog standard. Then we inherited my mil’s when she went into a home and it’s wonderful (probably 20 years old).

Greenteandchives · 31/12/2018 20:46

What sort of tins are you all opening? I haven’t used a tin opener for years. All the tins I open have ring pulls. Is it pet food or something?

lucky88 · 31/12/2018 21:04

Ours lasted 4 years so far just a cheapie from ikea
