Why is it tin-openers don't last 5 minutes?

Another bloody one just broken, I've not had it a year Xmas Hmm It wasn't a cheapie either, cost about a tenner from Tescos. Harumpf... When I was a kid they'd bloody last your entire childhood!

I’ve only ever owned the one!

GinaLinetti99 · 31/12/2018 21:13

We bought ours in April 2012, when we first moved in together and had no fridge so survived on tinned food for two weeks. It's still going strong.

Maybe you're buying the wrong kind?!

MiddlingMum · 31/12/2018 21:17

I still use the little camping one I had for doing Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. I'm now nearer 60 than 50, so no complaints about it at all. I do use it quite a lot as it seems the things I buy in tins don't have ring pulls. DH doesn't like ring pulls anyway so opens the bottom of the tin Grin

DM favours the butterfly type. All metal, just a fixed blade and one gripping wheel. Pretty much bulletproof, they rust over time but rarely break.

listsandbudgets · 31/12/2018 21:20

Mine is an oxo and I've had it about 1p years and still no problems. If contact them OP sounds like you've got a faulty one to be honest

listsandbudgets · 31/12/2018 21:21

10 years not 1p

safariboot · 31/12/2018 21:21

(Also, she's a leftie. Holds the tin opener right-handed though)

synderella · 31/12/2018 21:39

Magician - had mine 18 years!

thisisjustdaft · 31/12/2018 21:47

I've had mine 25 years plus I think, never broken one, the previous one went with ex when he moved out.

OhFlipMama · 31/12/2018 21:59

What are you doing to them! We've had ours 10+ years!

Oldraver · 31/12/2018 22:06

I had an OXO one that did seize.....however I had been puttin g it in the dishwasher.

The latest one seems ok

Esqueleto · 31/12/2018 22:24

My DH is left handed, perhaps it's him busting them.

Gagglegeese · 31/12/2018 22:27

Got given an electric tin opener.... I feel like a queen... I will never use another manual one unless I don't have electricity or it breaks lol

synderella · 31/12/2018 23:01

However my Magican will not open how disgusting Frey Bentos pies my kids like ( thanks mum) so that is another plus!

Skatersbeskating · 31/12/2018 23:02

Ive had a Culnaire one for years. They are fab.

Redyoyo · 31/12/2018 23:09

We've had our ikea one for 14 years no problems.
We were discussing this in work a few weeks ago and realised that there is a generation of young folk who dont know how to work a tin opener. We actually had to show a couple of the youngsters (23ish) YouTube videos of people opening tins of ham with a key, they had never seen it!!

Thesearmsofmine · 31/12/2018 23:14

We had a fancy one and broke it, picked up a cheap basic metal one from Wilko and it has lasted for hursts. Most cans do have ring pulls now but I always need to use it for kidney beans.

GymNGin · 31/12/2018 23:17

I've had shit ones that only open a tin when they feel like it, though they didn't appear broken. So I googled and saw lots of good reviews for oxo good grips. I bought one a few years ago (think it was about £9) and it's worked perfectly and easily every single time.

Don't wash them as in submerge or dishwasher - instead wipe/ sponge them clean ( I use kitchen towel & Dettol or some kind of spray or just damp cloth depending on what has been opened).

DerelictWreck · 31/12/2018 23:24

Another one who's never broken a tin opener! What on earth are you doing to it OP?!

GreenTulips · 31/12/2018 23:24

Do you have a left handed person using it?

ScreamingValenta · 31/12/2018 23:30

My husband is left-handed and always uses the 'magi-can' tin opener.

TellerTuesday4EVA · 31/12/2018 23:33

Agree OP I've had 4 this year alone, I'm right handed & it's def not the way I'm using them admittedly I only buy them from B&M it similar so maybe I should invest in a more expensive one& see if I have more luck with that!!

mortifiedmama · 01/01/2019 01:21

I've had my magican since uni, so 16 years!
