Why is it tin-openers don't last 5 minutes?

Another bloody one just broken, I've not had it a year Xmas Hmm It wasn't a cheapie either, cost about a tenner from Tescos. Harumpf... When I was a kid they'd bloody last your entire childhood!

The older ikea ones are much better than the ones they sell now, which doesn't help the OP.

We are OK at home as have an old ikea one, but we go through so many at work, it always seems to be on its last legs or broken.

As to what people are using a tin opener for, we have rice pudding, pulses, tuna, baked beans (Branston, much nicer than Heinz) and sometimes tinned tomatoes that need a tin opener rather than a ring pull.

Had ours for 20 years.
Which ones are good now then?

MaverickSnoopy · 01/01/2019 08:19

We went through about 5 in 2 years. In the end we got a barbrantia one about 8 years ago and so far so good.

Mine always break too.......

We've had the same wall mounted heavy-duty tin opener bought from Lakeland for about 15 years. It's followed us through several house moves and is still going strong.

And I have my mum's battered old tin opener she must have bought over 60 years ago, as a back up.

Seems we're the odd ones out here, though Grin

Wow ours has been going strong since 2003. We have an electric one now which is fantastic.

Try Kuhn Ricoh. It's a Swiss tin opener that is also a bottle opener and drinks can opener. It's weird to use in the beginning as you just lay it on the can lid and start turning.

YeOldeTrout · 02/01/2019 09:33

feels like we've had ours forever (at least 10 yrs), probably only use it 2-3x/week, though.

I'm left handed, so do find them awkward, and wondered if it could be that. But I'm nearly 50 and have only had ones that break in the last few years, previous ones have gone on for decades, so I think that it's more a case of them not being built as well nowadays.

People wash tin openers.... Every day is an. Education on MN.

Habadabadoo · 02/01/2019 11:32

Mine never last long either!

Bluetrews25 · 02/01/2019 13:01

I've managed to break cheap ones, expensive ones, magican whole top slicer-off-ers, the lot. Usually within weeks. I use them R handed. It always seemed to be the weld that fixed the serrated cutting wheel in place that snapped IIRC.
I have an electric one I got in morrisons for a fiver years ago. Love it.
