What makes people look rich?

I was out for a walk yesterday with my family. Another family walk along the path towards us. They were dressed in their scruffs, as were we. Other than a quick ‘hello’ as we passed, we didn’t hear them talking, so no accent to gauge. They just looked rich!! Once they’d passed, my cousin turned to me and quietly said ‘loaded!’, obviously out of ear shot. We were both trying the the new work out what brought us to the same conclusion. It wasn’t clothes, accent, we don’t know them, what car they drive, what house they own, jobs they do etc.. so zero knowledge about them, but my cousin and I both had the same first impression.
We could be wrong of course Grin and this is a lighthearted thread.
But, what makes someone look rich?

Slim, not overweight.

greendale17 · 31/12/2018 22:55

Good hair and skin, well fitted clothes and the way the person carries themselves

Skatersbeskating · 31/12/2018 23:01

I think if I cleaned my car out I would feel posh. Its filthy. Im embarresed when shit falls out of it. Its things like buckets & spades, but still it makes me feel like a minger.

lms2017 · 31/12/2018 23:08

I have 2 horses which I have had for 20 years since I was 10 and in that time I have never been rich!! . I am the poor horsey person however competed the same level as the rich kids !

If you go to a horse show you have people in £300 boots, wax hats and tweed coats usually a dog of some hunting variety they seem to dress to look better than they are in the horsey world just to fit in and then you have people like me... i wear a £20 pair of riggers that i dont mind being plastered in mud and horses that are just as well (home) trained as theirs!

Usually the Bf's are dressed like farmers too when their hands havent seen a hard days graft 😂😂

Thats how I tell the difference ... footwear !

No, because you have horses! Grin

What the fuck is wrong with Mumsnet these days? Nearly every single day of this week, someone starts a thread that talks about the way rich people look/how to look rich/how middle ducking class dress! It’s giving me THE RAGE!

Winterhatsandgloves · 31/12/2018 23:17

The walkers in the op probably didn't look worried or rushed / no money worries.
Good quality clothes, not garish, healthy, clean, well groomed in a casual way.

I've been to Waitrose in Cirencester once and the car park was rammed with Mercedes, Aston's etc - no bangers:) I thought there would be an invisible force field and I wouldn't be allowed in.

There were lots of Waitrose faces:) lots of well groomed women with quietly expensive clothes and accessories slowly wandering round clutching a hot drink and mooching away the day in the safe haven of Waitrose.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 31/12/2018 23:20

I think it’s body language, as well as good hair, skin and teeth.

Plus clothes are just ‘better’ but not necessarily flashy.

If you go to Harrods, you can instantly tell the tourists from the actual rich people.

ragged · 01/01/2019 00:50

Nothing makes them look rich ime. Coz there are cheap versions of most expensive things.
Maybe super nice suits. And Rolex watches. I'm thinking how Sally Yates dresses. Those suits cost a good price.

It's when people tell you about their holidays or where their kids went to school or where they live/what their house is like (or 2nd homes are like), that you know they have money.

What makes people look rich?
evenbetter · 01/01/2019 01:09

I have a rich relative and them plus their mates all kind of look the same in a way..horse people with expensive but not nice clothes (I mean no ‘crisp shirts’ or blazers; but muddy boots, gaiters, horse riding helmet hair, chucking any old shit in their trollies without a care, massive Range Rovers covered in dog snot and muck. I saw a couple while walking a dog and thought ‘loaded!’ they were dogless, man wearing pastel purple golfer type jumper and new looking jeans, tanned. (I am not rich whatsoever and look like the hedge has not only dragged me backwards, but bobbled my clothes, knotted my hair and punched me in the face repeatedly.)

user1457017537 · 01/01/2019 01:34

I don’t think you can’t tell to be honest. I know two couples who are extremely wealthy (Sunday Times Rich List) and you would never know. I think what you are describing is being genetically blessed and assuming the wealth.

VanGoghsDog · 01/01/2019 01:54

Lots of people have said slim. I know many fat rich people and even more slim poor people. So that really is not a differentiator.

BeekyChitch · 01/01/2019 02:25

I think people who are loaded have a certain glow about them. Maybe it's the expensive skincare products they use but they never seem To have bad skin! Their hair looks good too.

borntobequiet · 01/01/2019 06:20

Winterhats you didn’t visit Cirencester Waitrose when I was there or you would have spotted my ancient Micra and possibly my plebby resting bitch face!

camelfinger · 01/01/2019 06:29

I think they look like they haven’t been walking far as they park wherever is nearest not just where it’s cheap/free or they get taxis everywhere. So they don’t look cold or laden down with random bags and bulky coats.

Triglesoffy · 01/01/2019 08:51

You can’t tell if someone is über rich because they don’t like to flash it. And if they have kids then they spend all their money on school fees.

But if you really want to know how to acquire the look, say to yourself “euwwww” every time you look at someone you don’t know.

HairyDogsFeet · 01/01/2019 09:03

Watch and shoes.

AnnabelleLecter · 01/01/2019 09:15

I know rich and a few very rich people, friends, relations, neighbours and acquaintances. They're all very different looking and have completely different attitudes and lifestyle's, just like everyone else.
I can't think of a single thing looks wise or anything else that they all share.

Banjax · 01/01/2019 09:24

I agree with dogfeet here, its hair and shoes. I'd add hair and figure to that!

VamillaSugar · 01/01/2019 09:43

OP do you mean rich or classy? It’s the difference between Versace and Givenchy.

VamillaSugar · 01/01/2019 09:47

Also, if you’re rich enough, you can get away with it. One of the poshest ladies I know once pulled up in her filthy RR, chucked out 4 dishevelled kids and took them to the school door in her PJ bottoms. She isn’t chavvy, she’s eccentric

Neverunderfed · 01/01/2019 13:11

I have a friend who is like this. I have decided it is just image, breeding, sadly. I've known her for nearly 20 years, through various jobs, styles, clothes sizes etc and she has always just looked...well bred I guess. She's quite plump at the moment, has a funky short hair cut, dresses quite well. But even without the Barbour etc she just looks posh.

I think it is a combination of public school, confidence and belonging. Feeling and looking in place everywhere.

Neverunderfed · 01/01/2019 13:15

Inate, not image 😂

I think talking about what they wear sometimes misses the point. Some people could wear a bin liners and still look posh, others could be head to toe stereotypical posh clothes and still look cheap

One of my sisters looks rich. She had a well paid job as a local authority manage before taking redundancy, so was well paid but not wealthy. She was turned down for a supermarket cashier job for being too posh!
My other sister and I don't look rich...Smile
